Claims
- 1. A container of polyethylene terphthalate or similar thermoplastic material comprising a body, a closed bottom portion of curved shape which bulges inwardly into the body, and an annular region joining said bottom portion and said body, said annular region providing a standing surface for the container, the material of said body which is joined to said annular region being substantially monoaxially oriented with an orientation corresponding to that arising in a sheet of material which is stretched mono-axially to cause material flow, said annular region including a ring-shaped region which is constituted of material which is oriented and under internal pre-stress tending to contract said ring-shaped region, said internal pre-stress in said ring-shaped region being produced by reshaping said oriented material of said body, the combination of the orientation and internal pre-stress of said ring-shaped region serving as a means for preventing said inwardly curved bottom portion from straightening out or turning inside-out, said bottom portion of curved shape being uniform in thickness and relatively thick compared to said ring-shape region and having a periphery directly connected to said ring-shaped region substantially at said standing surface, said ring-shaped region directly connecting said relatively thick bottom portion to said body substantially at said standing surface, said material of said body having a thickness substantially less than the thick bottom portion to which it is connected by said ring-shaped region, said ring-shaped region providing stable connection of the body with the bottom portion while preventing the inwardly curved bottom portion from straightening out or turning inside-out.
- 2. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the material of said bottom portion is substantially amorphous.
- 3. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the material of said bottom portion is substantially thermocrystallized.
- 4. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the material in said ring-shaped region is deformed radially outwards.
- 5. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said ring-shaped region is situate between said standing surface and the axis of the container.
- 6. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said standing surface is situated between said ring-shaped region and the axis of the container.
- 7. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said internal pre-stress in said ring-shaped region comprises internal shrinkage stress.
- 8. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said body comprises a wall of biaxially stretched material.
- 9. A container as claimed in claim 8 wherein said body comprises a wall of biaxially stretched material.
- 10. A container as claimed in claim 9 wherein said wall has biaxial orientation.
- 11. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the material of said body is additionally oriented in the circumferential direction of the container with an orientation corresponding at most to that in a sheet of material when stretched mono-axially to cause material flow.
- 12. A container as claimed in claim 1, wherein the standing surface is at least partially formed by said ring-shaped region,
- 13. A container as claimed in claim 12 wherein said ring-shaped region is unstretched when reshaped to maintain a constant profile length.
- 14. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the material in the body and ring-shaped region has a crystallization of between 15-33% and the material in said bottom portion has a maximum crystallization of approximately 30%.
- 15. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said ring-shaped region is laterally bulged with respect to said body.
- 16. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said body is heat set.
- 17. A container as claimed in claim I wherein said body is thermocrystallized.
- 18. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the prestress in the material of said ring-shaped region is produced by change in diameter of said oriented material of said body.
- 19. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said ring-shaped region is reshaped from the oriented material of said body by bending initially tubular oriented material of said body to provide a curved shaped for said ring-shaped region.
- 20. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the relatively thick inwardly curved bottom portion is of substantially uniform thickness over its entire extent.
- 21. A container of polyethylene terphthalate or similar thermoplastic material comprising an annular wall of uniform thickness having an orientation in at least one direction, an inwardly curved bottom of substantially uniform greater thickness and less orientation than said wall, a ring-shaped region under internal pre-stress joining said curved bottom and said wall and preventing said curved bottom from straightening or turning inside-out, and a standing surface for the container in the vicinity of said ring-shaped region, said ring-shaped region providing a transition between the thicker less oriented material of the bottom and the thinner more oriented material of the wall in the vicinity of said standing surface.
- 22. A container as claimed in claim 21 wherein said ring-shaped region is constituted of material which has been stretched to flow and said internal prestress is produced by incomplete shrinkage of the material of said ring-shaped region.
- 23. A container as claimed in claim 21 comprising a flared mouth and a constricted portion on said annular wall at the top of the container.
