Claims
- 1. An ophthalmic lens block, comprising: a solidified mass of a thermoplastic blocking composition comprising a blend of between 30 and 65 weight percent of a hydrocarbon resin and between 20 and 70 weight percent of a side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer, the composition being solid at 21.degree. C. and having a sufficiently low melting or softening point such that the composition may be placed adjacent to an ophthalmic lens blank while at its melting or softening point without damaging the lens blank.
- 2. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the hydrocarbon resin is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic resins, aromatic resins, mixed aliphatic/aromatic resins, hydrogenated pure aromatic resins, and hydrogenated mixed aromatic resins.
- 3. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the hydrocarbon resin is selected from the group consisting of aromatic resins, hydrogenated pure aromatic resins, and hydrogenated mixed aromatic resins, and wherein the hydrocarbon resin has a Ring and Ball Softening Point between about 70.degree. and 110.degree. C.
- 4. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer is selected from the group consisting of ethylene polymers or copolymers having pendant hydrocarbon side chains of at least eight carbon atoms.
- 5. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 4, wherein the side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer has a Ring and Ball Softening Point between about 54.degree. and 75.degree. C.
- 6. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 4, wherein the side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer has a number average molecular weight between about 500 and 3,000.
- 7. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic blocking composition further comprises a modifier selected from the group consisting of:
- carboxylic acids of the general form CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.n COOH, where n is between about 10 and 16;
- straight chain monohydric alcohols of the general form CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.n OH, where n is between about 11 and 19; and
- branched chain monohydric alcohols having between 10 and 20 carbon atoms.
- 8. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 7, wherein the blend comprises between between 40 and 65 weight percent hydrocarbon resin, between 25 and 60 weight percent side chain crystallizable polymer or copolymer, and between 0.5 and 15 weight percent modifier.
- 9. An ophthalmic lens blocking kit, comprising
- a thermoplastic blocking composition according to claim 7; and
- a lens blank tape or coating, wherein the blocking composition has sufficient adhesion to the lens blank tape or coating to hold an ophthalmic lens during a generating procedure.
- 10. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the blend comprises between between 40 and 65 weight percent hydrocarbon resin and between 25 and 60 weight percent side chain crystallizable polymer or copolymer.
- 11. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic blocking composition has a melting or softening point between 45.degree. and 75.degree. C.
- 12. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the solidified mass of a thermoplastic blocking composition has a mean flexural strength of at least 1 MPa at 21.degree. C. and a mean bending modulus of at least 34.4 MPa at 21.degree. C.
- 13. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the block is formed entirely from the blocking composition.
- 14. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the block comprises a preformed block defining a cavity with a lens blank, and wherein the cavity contains the solidified blocking composition.
- 15. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 1, wherein the block comprises a preformed base block having a rear portion that is sized and adapted to fit the chuck of a lens processing machine, and a front portion having a negatively tapered peripheral edge and a curved front surface, wherein the front portion is adapted to mechanically retain the thermoplastic blocking composition to thereby form the lens block.
- 16. An ophthalmic lens blocking kit, comprising
- a thermoplastic blocking composition according to claim 1; and
- a lens blank tape or coating, wherein the blocking composition has sufficient adhesion to the lens blank tape or coating to hold an ophthalmic lens during a generating procedure.
- 17. An ophthalmic lens block, comprising: a solidified mass of a thermoplastic blocking composition comprising a blend of
- between 40 and 65 weight percent of a hydrocarbon resin selected from the group consisting of aliphatic resins, aromatic resins, mixed aliphatic/aromatic resins, hydrogenated pure aromatic resins, and hydrogenated mixed aromatic resins, wherein the hydrocarbon resin has a Ring and Ball Softening Point between about 70.degree. and 110.degree. C.;
- between 25 and 60 weight percent of a side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer selected from the group consisting of ethylene polymers or copolymers having pendant hydrocarbon side chains of at least eight carbon atoms, wherein the side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer has a Ring and Ball Softening Point between about 54.degree. and 75.degree. C.; and
- between 2 and 10 weight percent of a modifier selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids of the general form CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.n COOH, where n is between about 10 and 16, straight chain monohydric alcohols of the general form CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.n OH, where n is between about 11 and 19, and branched chain monohydric alcohols having between 10 and 20 carbon atoms, the composition being solid at 21.degree. C. and having a sufficiently low melting or softening point such that the composition may be placed adjacent to an ophthalmic lens blank while at its melting or softening point without damaging the lens blank.
- 18. An ophthalmic lens block according to claim 17, wherein the block comprises a preformed base block having a rear portion that is sized and adapted to fit the chuck of a lens processing machine, and a front portion having a negatively tapered peripheral edge and a curved front surface, wherein the front portion is adapted to mechanically retain the thermoplastic blocking composition to thereby form the lens block.
- 19. An ophthalmic lens blocking kit, comprising
- a thermoplastic blocking composition according to claim 17; and
- a lens blank tape or coating, wherein the blocking composition has sufficient adhesion to the lens blank tape or coating to hold an ophthalmic lens during a generating procedure.
- 20. An ophthalmic lens block, comprising: a solidified mass of a thermoplastic blocking composition comprising a blend of a hydrocarbon resin, a side chain crystallizable hydrocarbon polymer or copolymer, and a modifier selected from the group consisting of: carboxylic acids of the general form CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.n COOH, where n is between about 10 and 16; straight chain monohydric alcohols of the general form CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.n OH, where n is between about 11 and 19; and branched chain monohydric alcohols having between 10 and 20 carbon atoms, the composition being solid at 21.degree. C. and having a sufficiently low melting or softening point such that the composition may be placed adjacent to an ophthalmic lens blank while at its melting or softening point without damaging the lens blank.
