Claims
- 1. A structural, low-density article, comprising:
- a microballoon first component; and
- a polyetherimide polymer second component which is wetted to the microballoons and binds the microballoons together in an array.
- 2. The article of claim 1, wherein the first component comprises from about 3 parts by volume to about 85 parts by volume of the article, and the second component comprises from about 97 parts by volume to about 15 parts by volume of the article.
- 3. The article of claim 1, wherein the first component comprises from about 82 to about 78 parts by volume of the article and the second component comprises from about 18 to about 22 parts by volume of the article.
- 4. The article of claim 1, wherein the polyetherimide polymer second component is the polymerization product of an oligomeric precursor of the formula: ##STR1##
- 5. The article of claim 1, wherein the article further includes
- a fiber third component embedded within the article.
- 6. The article of claim 5, wherein the third component comprises from about 0.1 parts by volume to about 20 parts by volume of the article.
- 7. The article of claim 1, wherein the article further includes
- an air fourth component incorporated into the article in interstices between the microballoons.
- 8. The article of claim 7, wherein the fourth component comprise's from about 3 parts by volume to about 30 parts by volume of the article.
- 9. The article of claim 1, wherein the polyetherimide polymer second component is the polymerization product of an oligomeric precursor.
- 10. The article of claim 1, wherein the polyetherimide polymer second component is the polymerization product of an oligomeric precursor which has an initial viscosity at the processing temperature of from about 320.degree. C. to about 340.degree. C. sufficient to flow and to set the microballoons prior to polymerization.
