Claims
- 1. A polymeric molecular composite comprising about 10 to 60 weight percent of an aromatic heterocyclic rigid-rod polymer dispersed in about 15 to 35 weight percent of a flexible coil-like thermoplastic polymer and about 20 to 60 weight percent of a thermosetting resin, wherein said aromatic heterocyclic rigid-rod polymer has repeating units selected from the group consisting of ##STR5## wherein X is NH, N.phi., O or S, wherein .phi. is phenyl or a substituted phenyl group, and wherein Ar is ##STR6## wherein said thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyamides and polyphenylquinoxalines, wherein said polyamides comprise repeating units selected from the group consisting of
- --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.x --CO--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.6 --NH--
- wherein x is 4 or 8,
- --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.x' --NH--
- wherein x' is 5 to 8, and
- --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.4 --CO--N(CH.sub.2 OH)--(CH.sub.2).sub.6 --N(CH.sub.2 OH)--
- and copolymers and terpolymers containing these repeating units; and wherein said polyphenylquinoxaline has repeating units of the formula ##STR7## wherein Ar' is a phenyl or phenoxyphenyl group; and wherein said thermosetting resin is a bis(benzocyclobutene)-terminated imide oligomer of the formula ##STR8## and n has a value of 0 to 10.
- 2. The molecular composite of claim 1 comprising about 25 to 45 weight percent of said rigid-rod polymer, about 15 to 35 weight percent of said thermoplastic polymer and about 30 to 50 weight percent of said thermosetting resin.
- 3. The molecular composite of claim 1 wherein said thermosetting resin is a mixture of oligomers wherein at least about 90 weight percent of the mixture consists of oligomers wherein n is 0 to 6.
- 4. The molecular composite of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic polymer has a softening temperature at least about 25.degree. C. lower than the polymerization temperature of said thermosetting resin.
- 5. The molecular composite of claim 1 wherein said rigid-rod polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of about 5 to 40 dl/g as determined in methanesulfonic acid at 30.degree. C.
- 6. The molecular composite of claim 1 wherein said flexible, coil-like polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of about 1 to 5 dl/g as determined in methanesulfonic acid at 30.degree. C.
