Claims
- 1. A polymeric thermosettable composition comprising:
- a first polymeric thermosettable ingredient characterized as having an average of at least three acetoacetoxy functional pendant moieties per polymer molecule formed from an acetoacetoxy group containing monomer represented by the structure ##STR6## wherein R.sub.1 is either H or is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl group; wherein R.sub.2 is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl group;
- wherein X is either non-existent or is ##STR7## wherein Y is either non-existent or a divalent aromatic group, or is a divalent aliphatic cyclic group, or is --(CH.sub.2).sub.j -- and j is an integer of from 1 to 10, inclusive, or is --(CH.sub.2 --CHR.sub.1 --O).sub.m --CH.sub.2 --CHR.sub.1 -- wherein Y is existent when X ##STR8## and m is either zero or is an integer of from 1 to 9, inclusive; and a second polymeric thermosettable ingredient characterized as having an average of at least three acid-functional pendant moieties per polymer molecule,
- wherein the acid-functional and the acetoacetoxy functional pendant moieties are characterized as reacting to form a thermoset composition through crosslinking at a temperature of at least 180.degree. C.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the first polymeric thermosettable ingredient is formed from acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate and wherein the second thermosettable polymer ingredient is formed from acid monomers selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the first polymeric thermosettable ingredient is a copolymer of acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate and at least one vinyl monomer addition polymerizable with acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate and wherein the second thermosettable polymer ingredient is formed from acrylic acid.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the first polymeric thermosettable ingredient is formed from an acetoacetoxy group containing monomer and at least one monomer that is addition polymerizable with the acetoacetoxy group containing monomer selected from the group consisting of an acrylic acid ester, a methacrylic acid ester, a monomeric alkene, and a vinylic monomer.
