Claims
- 1. A composite mixture for the formation of structural syntactic foam, low density articles comprising:
- a plurality of microballoons;
- a finely divided solid epoxy thermosetting resin; and
- a plurality of electrically absorptive, short length fibers having an average fiber length of between about 0.010 and about 0.250 inch, a resistivity of from about 1.times.10.sup.-5 to about 1.times.10.sup.3 ohm-cm, and an average diameter of no more than about 0.45 mil, said fibers being present in an amount between about 0.001 percent and about 5 percent by volume in said mixture.
- 2. The mixture of claim 1, wherein the finely divided solid epoxy resin has a particle size of no greater than minus 100 mesh size.
- 3. The mixture of claim 1, wherein the microballoons are present in an amount 10 percent by volume to about 90 percent by volume and the resin is present in an amount from about 90 percent by volume to about 10 percent by volume.
- 4. The mixture of claim 1, wherein the microballoons are present in an amount from about 82 to about 78 percent by volume, the resin is present in an amount from about 18 to about 22 percent by volume, and the fibers are present in an amount from about 0.001 percent by volume to about 4 percent by volume.
- 5. The mixture of claim 1, wherein the finely divided solid epoxy resin has a particle size of no greater than minus 320 mesh size.
- 6. The mixture of claim 1, wherein the microballoons have a diameter of between 5 and 150 microns.
- 7. The mixture of claim 1, wherein the microballoons are formed of glass, silica, or carbon.
- 8. The mixture of claim 1, wherein the microballoons include a coupling agent.
- 9. The mixture of claim 8, wherein the coupling agent is a functionally substituted siloxane.
