Claims
- 1. A biologically pure microorganism Thermus sp FERM BP-1678 which is capable of producing .beta.-galactosidase having an optimum temperature of 75.degree. to 85.degree. C., an optimum pH of 4.5 to 6.5 and an enzymatic activity reduced by at most 10% by the presence of 50 mM each of galactose and glucose, said biologically pure microorganism having at least the following bacteriological properties:
- ______________________________________A. Morphological properties: Shape bacillus Mobility - Gram's stain - Flagellum - Spore -B. Growth on various media: Agar plate medium circular, protuberant, orange Agar slant medium flat, orange Liquid medium grown cell mass precipitates Litmus milk no change Liquid medium containing - 5% NaCl Liquid medium containing + 2% NaClC. Growth pH and temperature: Growth pH 5.5-8.5 Growth temperature 40-80.degree. C.D. Biochemical properties Nitrate reduction + Denitrification reaction .+-. VP test - Indole formation - Hydrogen sulfide formation - Starch hydrolysis .+-. Citric Acid utilization Inorganic nitrogen source +(NH.sub.4) utilization Coloring matter formation formed (orange) Urease - Oxidase + Catalase + O-F test 0 Oxygen requirement Not grown under anaerobic condition Gelatin liquefactionE. Assimilation of sugar: L-arabinose - D-xylose - D-glucose + D-mannose + D-fructose + D-galactose - Maltose + Sucrose + Lactose + Trehalose + D-sorbitol - D-mannitol - Inositol - Glycerin - Starch -______________________________________

Growth pH and temperature: Growth pH 5.5-8.5 Growth temperature 40-80.degree.C.D. Biochemical properties: Nitrate reduction + Denitrification reaction .+-.
