Claims
- 1. A composition exhibiting a reversible temperature dependent clear to opaque transition and a Lower Critical Solution Temperature between 1.degree. C. and 95.degree. C., which comprises
- (A) 10 to 99.8% by weight of water, and
- (b) 90 to 0.2% by weight of a crosslinked or linear water-swellable random copolymer which comprises the copolymerization product of
- (a) 20 to 85% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide;
- (b) 15 to 80% by weight of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or alkaromatic hydrocarbyl acrylate with 1 to 18 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbyl moiety, or an alkoxy- or poly(alkoxy)ethyl acrylate with 2 to 5 carbon atoms int he alkoxy moiety, or mixtures thereof,
- (c) 0 to 5% by weight of a polyolefinic crosslinking monomer, and
- (d) 0 to 20% by weight of one or more monoolefinic monomers other than the acrylates of component (b),
- with the proviso, that if component (c) is greater than zero, component (d) is zero and component (a) is 20 to 55% by weight and the equilibrium water content of the crosslinked polymer is 12 to 55% by weight of the swollen gel, and with the further proviso that if component (b) is methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl acrylate, the polymer is uncrosslinked (c=zero).
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the copolymer of component (B), component (d) is 0 to 10% by weight.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2 where the copolymer of component (B) is the copolymerization product of
- (a) 40 to 85% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide,
- (b) 15 to 60% by weight of an alkyl or cycloalkyl acrylate with 1 to 12 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbyl moiety, or mixtures thereof;
- (c) is zero; and
- (d) 0 to 10% by weight.
- 4. A composition according to claim 2 where the copolymer of component (B) is the copolymerization product of
- (a) 40 to 85% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide,
- (b) 15 to 60% by weight of an alkyl or cycloalkyl acrylate with 1 to 12 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbyl moiety, or mixtures thereof, with the proviso that the product of the average number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbyl moiety of the alkyl or cycloalkyl acrylate and the mol fraction of said acrylate in the polymer is 0.3 to 1.5,
- (c) is zero, and
- (d) is zero.
- 5. A composition according to claim 4 where in the copolymer of component (B), the alkyl acrylate of component (b) is methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl or tert-butyl acrylate.
- 6. A composition according to claim 2 where the copolymer of component (B) is the copolymerization product of
- (a) 25 to 70% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide,
- (b) 30 to 75% by weight of butoxyethyl, propoxyethyl, ethoxyethyl or ethoxy-ethoxyethyl acrylate or mixtures thereof, and
- (c) is zero.
- 7. A composition according to claim 5 where the copolymer of component (B) is the copolymerization product of
- (a) 40 to 70% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, and
- (b) 30 to 60% by weight of methyl acrylate.
- 8. A composition according to claim 5 where the copolymer of component (B) is the copolymerization product of
- (a) 45 to 75% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, and
- (b) 25 to 55% by weight of ethyl acrylate.
- 9. A composition according to claim 5 where the copolymer of component (B) is the copolymerization product of
- (a) 50 to 80% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, and
- (b) 20 to 50% by weight of propyl or isopropyl acrylate.
- 10. A composition according to claim 5 where the copolymer of component (B) is the copolymerization product of
- (a) 65 to 85% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, and
- (b) 15 to 35% by weight of butyl, isobutyl or tert-butyl acrylate.
- 11. A composition according to claim 5 which additionally contains 0.5 to 30% by weight of an organic solvent which has at least a 1% solubility in water.
- 12. A composition according to claim 6 which additionally contains 0.5 to 30% by weight of an organic solvent which has at least a 1% solubility in water.
- 13. A composition according to claim 2 which additionally contains 0.5 to 30% by weight of an organic solvent which has at least a 1% solubility in water.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 15. A composition according to claim 2, in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 16. A composition according to claim 3 in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 17. A composition according to claim 4, in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 18. A composition according to claim 5, in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 19. A composition according to claim 6, in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 20. A composition according to claim 7 in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 21. A composition according to claim 8, in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 22. A composition according to claim 9, in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 23. A composition according to claim 10, in which component (A) is an aqueous gel.
- 24. An aqueous, polymeric gel with 50-99% water content, containing 0.5-20% by weight of a soluble poly-(N-alkyl-acrylamide) with a Lower Critical Solution Temperature between 0 and 95.degree. C.
- 25. An aqueous, polymeric gel with 50-99% water content, containing 0.5-20% by weight of a copolymer according to claim 3 with a lower Critical Solution Temperature between 0.degree. and 95.degree. C.
