Claims
- 1. A pair of thread rolling dies comprising each die providing a working face extending from a start end to a finish end and provided with thread forming grooves angulated at the helix angle of the threads to be formed, said thread forming grooves cooperating to form threads on a fastener blank by causing said blank to roll between said working faces from said start end to said finish end, a given location on said fastener being progressively and repeatedly formed alternately by thread forming grooves on one working face and then by thread forming grooves on the other working face, an inclined roll-on ramp at the start end of one die along which said blank moves until it is gripped between said working faces to commence the forming of threads thereon, the gripping of said blank between said dies occurring at a location spaced from the start end of said one die by a distance substantially equal to the length of said roll-on ramp, said thread forming grooves being positioned with respect to said working faces so that a match point exists at a location spaced form said start end of said one die and substantially when said blank is first gripped between said working faces.
- 2. A pair of thread rolling dies as set forth in claim 1, wherein said dies operate to form multiple lead threads, said dies providing first and second arrays of interspaced thread forming grooves, said first arrays providing a different thread form than said second arrays, said match point being located to match said first array of one die with said first array of the other die.
- 3. A pair of dies as set forth in claim 2, wherein said dies provide rise angle surfaces operable to thread and form a point on a fastener, and said rise angle surfaces are similarly located and shaped with respect to said match point.
- 4. A pair of dies as set forth in claim 3, wherein said dies provide a cut off surface and are operable to point unpointed fastener blanks, the beginnings of said rise angle surfaces on both of said dies being spaced an equal distance from said match point.
- 5. A pair of dies as set forth in claim 1, wherein said working face of the other of said dies has a length greater than said working face of said one die, said match point being spaced from the start end of said working face of said other die by a distance substantially equal to one-half the difference in length of said working faces plus a distance substantially equal to the length of said roll-on surface.
