- 1. A method for forming a spline in a first portion of a shaft of a preformed workpiece such as a universal joint member of the type used in vehicle drives and simultaneously threading a second coaxial shaft portion that has a smaller diameter than the diameter of the first portion, said method comprising the steps of: rotatably supporting the shaft for rotation about a center longitudinal axis of the shaft between a pair of dies, each of the dies having a thread forming portion and a recessed spline forming portion; adjusting the lead angle of the thread forming portion by an amount inversely proportional to the diameter of the first portion of the workpiece shaft, splining the first portion of the shaft as it rotates while simultaneously threading the second portion of the shaft, and slipping the thread forming die relative to the formed threads in the second portion of the shaft as the splines are simultaneously formed while maintaining the precise integrity of the formed threads.
