Claims
- 1. In a high pressure press for molding and vulcanizing rubber articles having a frame including a fixed head, a ram mounted for movement toward and away from said head between a retracted position and an advanced position, a fixed platen, an intermediate floating platen and a moveable platen located between said ram and said head, a first vulcanizing mold located between said fixed platen and said intermediate platen and having a first section carried by said fixed platen and a second section carried by said intermediate platen and a second vulcanizing mold located between said intermediate platen and said moveable platen and having a first section carried by said intermediate platen and a second section carried by said moveable platen, each mold having a plurality of mold cavities, means for heating each mold to a vulcanizing temperature, and means for applying pressure to said ram to close both molds, the improvement which comprises:
- (a) first power-operated means for locking said first mold in a closed position when said intermediate platen and said moveable platen are in the ram-advanced position;
- (b) second power-operated means for locking said second mold in a closed position when said intermediate platen and said moveable platen are in the ram advanced position; and
- (c) means for causing each of said power-operated means to release its associated mold when locking of the other mold is effected so that one of said molds opens when the moveable platen is moved to its ram-retracted position.
- 2. A vulcanizing press according to claim 1 wherein said first and second power locking means are mounted on the respective fixed and moveable platens and wherein each of said power locking means includes a power cylinder having a piston and wedge means carried by said piston having an inclined surface, a wedge block adjacent each wedge means and connected to said intermediate platen, said block having an inclined surface engageable with the inclined surface of the associated wedge means, a pair of wedge guides mounted on each of said fixed and moveable platens for engaging the associated wedge means as it is advanced and retracted, said guides being spaced apart to permit movement of the associated wedge block between said guides and being located to engage one side of said wedge means when the opposite inclined surface of the wedge means is in position against the inclined surface of its associated wedge block, whereby outward movement of said wedge means locks its associated mold in a closed position.
- 3. A vulcanizing press according to claim 2 wherein each pair of wedge guides is spaced apart a distance corresponding substantially to the width of the associated wedge block and has beveled edges to assist in guiding the wedge block between said guides.
- 4. In a high pressure press for molding and vulcanizing rubber articles having a frame including a fixed head, a ram mounted for movement toward and away from said head, a fixed platen, an intermediate floating platen and a moveable platen located between said ram and said head, a first vulcanizing mold located between said fixed platen and said intermediate platen and having a first section carried by said upper platen and a second section carried by said intermediate platen, a second vulcanizing mold located between said intermediate platen and said moveable platen and having a first section carried by said intermediate platen and a second section carried by said moveable platen, each mold having a plurality of mold cavities of a predetermined shape for forming the rubber articles, means for heating each mold to a vulcanizing temperature, and means for applying pressure to said ram to close both molds and for applying a pressure of at least 2000 pounds per square inch to the unvulcanized rubber in said mold cavities, the improvement which comprises:
- (a) first power locking means for said first mold including a power cylinder having a piston and a wedge means carried by said piston,
- (b) means for locking said first mold in a closed position in response to movement of said wedge means in one direction and for releasing said first mold in response to movement of said wedge means in the opposite direction,
- (c) a second power locking means for said second mold having means for locking said second mold in a closed position when said first power locking means is released, and
- (d) means for releasing said molds when the other mold is locked in its closed position.
- 5. A press according to claim 4 wherein means are provided for alternately connecting said floating platen to said fixed platen and to said moveable platen including a first wedge block for said fixed platen and a second wedge block for said moveable platen, each wedge block having an inclined surface for engaging the wedge means of the associated power locking means, and means are provided for guiding each of said wedge means toward and away from its associated wedge block so that the associated platen is rigidly connected to said intermediate platen to hold one of said molds closed when said last-named wedge means engages the inclined surface of its associated wedge block.
- 6. A press according to claim 1 or claim 4 wherein said intermediate platen is located below said fixed platen and above said moveable platen and said ram is mounted for vertical movement.
