Claims
- 1. A device for removing thrombus or other tissue from an occluded or obstructed biological or synthetic body vessel or from a body cavity comprising:a. a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end, having a first passage and a second passage extending along the length thereof, each passage with a proximal and distal end; b. said proximal end of said first passage is connected to a high pressure fluid source which drives a flow of high pressure fluid into said first passage; c. said first passage carrying the flow of high pressure fluid from said proximal end to said distal end, said distal end of said first passage having one or more orifices; d. said second passage carrying a flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue from said distal end to said proximal end, said distal end of said second passage being open; e. wherein the high pressure fluid carried by said first passage emanates from said orifices forming fluid jets, said orifices directing the jets in a distal to proximal direction; f. wherein one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage impinges on said open distal end of said second passage, thereby providing stagnation pressure to drive the flow of effluent and emulsified tissue from said distal end of said second passage towards said proximal end of said second passage; g. said proximal end of said second passage provides removal of the tissue fragments from the body vessel; and, h. wherein said distal end of said first passage is formed into a toroidal shape having one or more orifices and which is oriented in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said tubular member to direct one or more of the fluid jets onto said distal end of said second passage.
- 2. A device for removing thrombus or other tissue from an occluded or obstructed biological or synthetic body vessel or from a body cavity comprising;a. a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end, having a first passage and a second passage extended along the length thereof, each passage with a proximal and distal end; b. said proximal end of said first passage is connected to a high pressure fluid source which drives a flow of high pressure fluid into said first passage; c. said first passage carrying the flow of high pressure fluid from said proximal end to said distal end, said distal end of said first passage having one or more orifices; d. said second passage carrying a flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue from said distal end to said proximal end, said distal end of said second passage being open; e. wherein the high pressure fluid carried by said first passage emanates from said orifices forming fluid jets, said orifices directing the jets in a distal to proximal direction; f. one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage to produce a low pressure region which tends to bring the tissue towards the fluid jet(s); g. said proximal end of said second passage provides removal of the tissue fragments from the body vessel or from the body cavity; and, h. wherein said distal end of said first passage is formed into a toroidal shape having one or more orifices and which is oriented in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said tubular member to direct one or more of the fluid jets onto said distal end of said second passage.
- 3. A device for removing thrombus or other tissue from an occluded or obstructed biological or synthetic body vessel or from a body cavity comprising:a. a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end, having a first passage and a second passage extending along the length thereof, each passage with a proximal and distal end; b. said proximal end of said first passage is connected to a high pressure fluid source which drives a flow of high pressure fluid into said first passage; c. said first passage carrying the flow of high pressure fluid from said proximal end to said distal end, said distal end of said first passage having one or more orifices; d. said second passage carrying a flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue from said distal end to said proximal end, said distal end of said second passage being open; e. wherein the high pressure fluid carried by said first passage emanates from said orifices forming fluid jets, said orifices directing the jets in a distal to proximal direction; f. wherein one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage impinges on said open distal end of said second passage, the high pressure fluid in said first passage being under high pressure greater than approximately 500 psi, providing sufficient energy in the jets to cut or emulsify harder tissue; g. said open proximal end of said second passage provides removal of the tissue fragments from the body vessel; h. wherein one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage impinges on said open distal end of said second passage, thereby providing stagnation pressure to drive the flow of effluent and emulsified tissue from said distal end of said second passage towards said proximal end of said second passage; and, i. wherein said distal end of said first passage is formed into a toroidal shape having one or more orifices and which is oriented in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said tubular member to direct one or more of the fluid jets onto said distal end of said second passage.
- 4. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein the high pressure fluid source is a positive-displacement piston pump.
- 5. The device of claim 4 wherein said positive-displacement piston pump provides the high pressure fluid flow in a largely pulsatile or periodic unsteady flow.
- 6. The device of claim 4 wherein said positive-displacement piston pump provides the high pressure fluid flow in a largely steady flow.
- 7. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said second passage also provides passage for a catheter device.
- 8. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein one or more of the fluid jets impinging on said open distal end of said second passage are directed with some radial component.
- 9. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein one or more of the fluid jets have lower fluid velocity than other of the fluid jets.
- 10. The device of claim 1, or 2 wherein a metering means is connected to said proximal end of said second passage to control the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue at a rate of flow less than the rate of flow which would result without said metering means.
- 11. The device of claim 10 wherein said metering means consists of a roller pump which controls the outflow resistance in said second passage and hence controls the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue.
- 12. The device of claim 10 wherein said metering means controls the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue in said second passage at a rate of flow approximately equal to the rate of flow of high pressure fluid in said first passage.
- 13. The device of claim 10 wherein said metering means controls the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue in said second passage at a rate of flow less than the rate of flow of high pressure fluid in said first passage.
- 14. The device of claim 10 wherein said metering means controls the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue in said second passage at a rate of flow greater than the rate of flow of high pressure fluid in said first passage.
- 15. The device of claim 1 or 2 wherein a suction means is connected to said proximal end of said second passage to control the flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue at a rate of flow greater than the rate of flow which would result without said suction means.
- 16. The device of claim 15 wherein said suction means consists of a roller pump.
- 17. The device of claim 15 wherein said suction means controls the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue in said second passage at a rate of flow approximately equal to the rate of flow of high pressure fluid in said first passage.
- 18. The device of claim 15 wherein said suction means controls the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue in said second passage at a rate of flow less than the rate of flow of high pressure fluid in said first passage.
- 19. The device of claim 15 wherein said suction means controls the rate of flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue in said second passage at a rate of flow greater than the rate of flow of high pressure fluid in said first passage.
- 20. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said tubular member further comprises one or more additional passage(s) providing communication between said proximal and distal ends of said tubular member.
- 21. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said first passage comprises a high-strength non-polymeric material.
- 22. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said first passage comprises a tube constructed of a high-strength polymer.
- 23. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein therapeutic material is delivered through said second passage of said tubular member.
- 24. The device of claim 23 wherein the high pressure fluid carried in said first passage contains the therapeutic material; thereby the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage also contain the therapeutic material.
- 25. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein diagnostic material is delivered through said second passage of said tubular member.
- 26. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein the high pressure fluid carried in said first passage contains a diagnostic material; thereby the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage also contain the diagnostic material.
- 27. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said first passage comprises a tube constructed of a high-strength composite material, the composite material being composed of at least two materials, at least one of the materials being a polymeric material.
- 28. A device for removing thrombus or other tissue from an occluded or obstructed biological or synthetic body vessel or from a body cavity comprising:a. a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end, having a first passage and a second passage extending along the length thereof, each passage with a proximal and distal end; b. said proximal end of said first passage is connected to a high pressure fluid source which drives a flow of high pressure fluid into said first passage; c. said first passage carrying the flow of high pressure fluid from said proximal end to said distal end, said distal end of said first passage having one or more orifices; d. said second passage carrying a flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue from said distal end to said proximal end, said distal end of said second passage being open; e. wherein the high pressure fluid carried by said first passage emanates from said orifices forming fluid jets, said orifices directing the jets in a distal to proximal direction; f. wherein one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage impinges on said open distal end of said second passage, thereby providing stagnation pressure to drive the flow of effluent and emulsified tissue from said distal end of said second passage towards said proximal end of said second passage; g. said proximal end of said second passage provides removal of the tissue fragments from the body vessel; h. wherein said distal end of said first passage is formed into an arcuate shape having one or more orifices and extending beyond said second passage to direct one or more of the fluid jets onto said distal end of said second passage; and, i. wherein a plurality of said fluid jets emanate from various points along said arcuate-shaped distal end of said first passage; when a guidewire is in position near said distal end of said first passage, the fluid jets are therefore oriented at various points around the guidewire thereby decreasing any effect that the guidewire may have in shielding any tissue from the effects of the jets.
- 29. A device for removing thrombus or other tissue from an occluded or obstructed biological or synthetic body vessel or from a body cavity comprising;a. a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end, having a first passage and a second passage extended along the length thereof, each passage with a proximal and distal end; b. said proximal end of said first passage is connected to a high pressure fluid source which drives a flow of high pressure fluid into said first passage; c. said first passage carrying the flow of high pressure fluid from said proximal end to said distal end, said distal end of said first passage having one or more orifices; d. said second passage carrying a flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue from said distal end to said proximal end, said distal end of said second passage being open; e. wherein the high pressure fluid carried by said first passage emanates from said orifices forming fluid jets, said orifices directing the jets in a distal to proximal direction; f. one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage to produce a low pressure region which tends to bring the tissue towards the fluid jet(s); g. said proximal end of said second passage provides removal of the tissue fragments from the body vessel or from the body cavity; h. wherein said distal end of said first passage is formed into an arcuate shape having one or more orifices and extending beyond said second passage to direct one or more of the fluid jets onto said distal end of said second passage; and, i. wherein a plurality of said fluid jets emanate from various points along said arcuate-shaped distal end of said first passage; when a guidewire is in position near said distal end of said first passage, the fluid jets are therefore oriented at various points around the guidewire thereby decreasing any effect that the guidewire may have in shielding any tissue from the effects of the jets.
- 30. A device for removing thrombus or other tissue from an occluded or obstructed biological or synthetic body vessel or from a body cavity comprising:a. a tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end, having a first passage and a second passage extending along the length thereof, each passage with a proximal and distal end; b. said proximal end of said first passage is connected to a high pressure fluid source which drives a flow of high pressure fluid into said first passage; c. said first passage carrying the flow of high pressure fluid from said proximal end to said distal end, said distal end of said first passage having one or more orifices; d. said second passage carrying a flow of effluent fluid and emulsified tissue from said distal end to said proximal end, said distal end of said second passage being open; e. wherein the high pressure fluid carried by said first passage emanates from said orifices forming fluid jets, said orifices directing the jets in a distal to proximal direction; f. wherein one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage impinges on said open distal end of said second passage, the high pressure fluid in said first passage being under high pressure greater than approximately 500 psi, providing sufficient energy in the jets to cut or emulsify harder tissue; g. said open proximal end of said second passage provides removal of the tissue fragments from the body vessel; h. wherein one or more of the fluid jets emanating from said distal end of said first passage impinges on said open distal end of said second passage, thereby providing stagnation pressure to drive the flow of effluent and emulsified tissue from said distal end of said second passage towards said proximal end of said second passage; i. wherein said distal end of said first passage is formed into an arcuate shape having one or more orifices and extending beyond said second passage to direct one or more of the fluid jets onto said distal end of said second passage; and, j. wherein a plurality of said fluid jets emanate from various points along said arcuate-shaped distal end of said first passage; when a guidewire is in position near said distal end of said first passage, the fluid jets are therefore oriented at various points around the guidewire thereby decreasing any effect that the guidewire may have in shielding any tissue from the effects of the jets.
