Claims
- 1. In a data storage system including a portable partitionable pack of flexible disks, this pack comprising:
- a plurality of like flexible circular recording disks, each including at least one planar recording surface, the disks being formed and arranged in a concentric stack so that the stack is "partitionable end-wise" and normal to said recording surface rather than "edge-wise" or from the side of the pack;
- each said disk of said stack having a central bore for engaging disk pack rotation means and an encoded arrangement of "partition apertures" provided about at least part of a common arcuate segment relatively concentric with the disk center;
- the disks being attached together adjacent this central bore and being formed and stacked so that these segments register and so that predetermined, of said superposed "partition apertures" of different disks lie in registry to thereby generate at least one set of "blind deflection bores" extending through the stack from one end thereof, each such bore in a set terminating at a respective different disk in the stack, so as to accommodate the selective partitioning deflection of said respective disk in cooperation with "end-wise partition means" adapted to be selectively thrust along any such bore which has been registered with it;
- the combination therewith of an automatic disk handling arrangement comprising:
- disc pack rotation means;
- transverse thrust means, arranged and adapted to be automatically thrust up at least a selected one of these blind deflection bores to thereby effect said "end-wise partition"; and
- select control means adapted to control said rotation means so as to register said thrust means with the selected deflection bore, said thrust means being operatively related with said control means and controlled thereby to invoke each such partitioning thrust.
- 2. The combination as recited in claim 1, wherein said pack is operatively combined with said disk handling arrangement.
- 3. The combination as recited in claim 2, wherein each of said disks in said pack is exhibits an encoded arrangement of partition apertures provided therein with predetermined ones of said apertures of different disks registered so that at least one set of unique bores are provided from an end of the stack, each bore respectively terminating at the surface of a respective disk; and
- wherein said thrust means is adapted to direct at least one thrust force normal to the disk surfaces through a selected one of said bores for deflecting and partitioning said stack between a corresponding pair of adjacent disks.
- 4. The combination as recited in claim 3, wherein said disk apertures are located along a common outer circumference of said stack, at different angular positions, such that each of said bore sites is located at a unique angular position along a common circumferential track;
- wherein said thrust means provides said thrust forces at certain associated positions intersecting said track; and
- wherein said drive means and said control means are adapted to, conjointly, controllably rotate said stack to selectable angular positions such that selected bores associated with partitioning for a selected disk, are rotated to an angular position which registers them with respective thrust means whereby said thrusting force may be passed to deflect the disk adjacent a given selected disk.
- 5. The combination as recited in claim 4, wherein said thrust means includes at least one plunger means selectably disposable at, and directable into, a selected one of said bore sites, said plunger means being operable to pass through a selected one of said unobstructed bores and thereby provide thrust force adapted to deflect corresponding disks and so partition the stack between the pair of adjacent disks, corresponding to the particular bore site at which said plunger means is disposed.
- 6. The combination as recited in claim 5, wherein said unobstructed bores are located along a common outer circumference of said stack; and
- wherein each said plunger means include at least one plunger located in a fixed position adjacent one end of the stack and being reciprocable, toward and away from the stack, in a direction transverse to disk surfaces and intersecting said common outer track, by an excursion sufficient to deflect all disks in the stack.
- 7. The combination as recited in claim 1, wherein said storage system includes transducing means; and
- wherein said thrust means comprises at least one pair of thrusting plungers disposed to closely flank the path of said transducing means and thereby present a partition opening which readily accommodates the entry of the transducing means into the pack.
- 8. The combination as recited in claim 1, wherein said thrust means comprises at least one pneumatic stream; and
- wherein said drive means and control means are conjointly operated to accommodate said deflection and partition without completely arresting the rotation of the disk pack.
- 9. The combination as recited in claim 8, wherein said partition apertures are adapted to receive and pass said pneumatic partitioning streams and are disposed adjacent the center of the disks.
