Claims
- 1. A tibial prosthesis convertible in vivo to a modular device, comprising a tibial base having a modular bearing retainer on its superior surface, said retainer including a raised portion with a cavity in a centrally facing surface thereof, and a primary bearing molded to said tibial base.
- 2. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said tibial base has a posterior edge and said raised portion is at said posterior edge.
- 3. The prosthesis of claim 2, further comprising means mounted on said tibial base for forcibly removing said primary bearing from said tibial base substantially in one piece without disturbing said tibial base.
- 4. A tibial prosthesis convertible in vivo to a modular device, comprising a tibial base having a modular bearing retainer adapted to cooperate with an auxiliary mechanical locking element to securely retain a modular bearing on said tibial base, and a primary bearing molded to said tibial base.
- 5. The prosthesis of claim 4, wherein said retainer includes a raised portion with a cavity in an anterior-facing surface thereof at the posterior edge of said tibial base.
- 6. The prosthesis of claim 4, wherein said retainer further includes a pair of posts at the anterior edge of said tibial base, and wherein said auxiliary mechanical locking element comprises a clip adapted to engage said posts and the modular bearing.
- 7. The prosthesis of claim 4, wherein said retainer includes a threaded hole, and wherein said auxiliary mechanical locking member comprises a screw.
- 8. The prosthesis of claim 4, wherein said retainer includes a dovetail surface member.
- 9. The prosthesis of claim 4, further comprising means for removing said primary bearing from said tibial base substantially in one piece without disturbing said tibial base.
- 10. A method of making a tibial prosthesis, comprising;
providing a tibial base with a retainer for a prefabricated replacement bearing to be secured to said tibial base after removal of primary bearing therefrom; and direct compression molding a primary bearing to said tibial base.
- 11. A tibial prosthesis system, comprising:
a tibial base having means for retaining a prefabricated bearing thereon; a primary bearing direct compression molded to said base; and a prefabricated replacement bearing adapted to be retained on said base by said retaining means after removal of said primary bearing from said base during revision surgery.
- 12. The system of claim 11, further comprising a locking clip, wherein said retaining means includes means for cooperating with said clip to retain said prefabricated replacement bearing in place on said base after removal of said primary bearing during revision surgery.
- 13. The system of claim 11, further comprising an auxiliary threaded fastener, wherein said retaining means includes threaded means for cooperating with said threaded fastener to retain said prefabricated replacement bearing in place on said base after removal of said primary bearing during revision surgery.
- 14. The system of claim 11, wherein said retaining means includes snap fit means.
- 15. A method of replacing a knee joint, comprising:
providing a tibial base with a retainer for a prefabricated replacement bearing to be secured to said tibial base after removal of a primary bearing therefrom; direct compression molding a primary bearing to said tibial base; and implanting said tibial base with said retainer and primary bearing in a patient during primary knee replacement surgery.
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:
removing said primary bearing during revision surgery without removing said tibial base; and securing a prefabricated replacement bearing to said retainer during said revision surgery.
- 17. A tibial prosthesis convertible in vivo to a modular device, comprising:
a tibial base having means for retaining a modular bearing thereon; a primary bearing secured to said tibial base without an auxiliary mechanical locking element; and release means for forcing said primary bearing away from said tibial base without disturbing said tibial base.
- 18. The prosthesis of claim 17, wherein said release means includes an opening therein for engaging an extraction tool to be inserted during a revision procedure for actuation of said release means.
- 19. A tibial prosthesis convertible in vivo to a modular device, comprising a tibial base having a hollow stem portion adapted to rotatably support a modular bearing, and a primary bearing nonrotatably, secured to said tibial base.
- 20. A knee replacement system, comprising:
a tibial base; a primary bearing secured to said tibial base; a bearing extraction member mounted on said tibial base; and extraction instrumentation including a brace and means for engaging said bearing extraction member.
