Claims
- 1. A method for identifying proteins expressed by vector-borne pathogens transmitted to animals via saliva of blood sucking arthropods which comprises:a) collecting the saliva from said arthropods; b) culturing the pathogens from the saliva in a growth medium; c) visualizing the presence of the pathogens as cells; d) labeling and incubating the cells in a medium consisting essentially of the saliva; e) resolving the proteins of the labeled cells; f) visualizing the resolved proteins; and g) identifying the resolved proteins.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the pathogens are bacterial pathogens selected from the families consisting of Borreliae, Rickettsiae, and Ehrlichiae and wherein the arthropod is selected from the family Ixodidae.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the arthropod is I. scapularis and the bacterial pathogen is B. burgdorferi.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the pathogen is any protozoan parasite.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the protozoan parasite is a piroplasm.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the piroplasm is selected from the group consisting of Babesia and Theileria.
- 7. The method of claim 2 which comprises:radioactive labeling of the cells.
