Claims
- 1. A timber system for spanning a distance between two existing timbers, fixed in place in an existing structure, said system comprising:
- a generally "U" shaped timber expander including an existing timber receiver region adapted for receiving and coupling said existing timber fixed in place in an existing structure to said timber expander, said timber expander comprising:
- a first continuous wood member having first and second portions, said first portion extending in a first direction, said second portion extending from said first portion in a second direction opposite from said first direction;
- a second continuous wood member disposed in spaced parallel relationship to said first continuous wood member, said second continuous wood member having first and second portions, said first portion extending in said first direction parallel to said first portion of said first continuous wood member, said second portion of said second continuous wood member extending from said first portion of said second continuous wood member in said second direction opposite from said first direction parallel to said second portion of said first continuous wood member;
- said first portions of both said first and second continuous wood members providing an existing timber coupling region, for allowing at least a segment of the first portion of said first continuous wood member to couple to a first major planar surface of at least a first and second existing timbers fixed in place in an existing structure, and for allowing at least a segment of said first portion of said second continuous wood member to couple to a second, parallel major planar surface of said at least first and second existing timbers fixed in a place in an existing structure; and
- a spanning timber, disposed between and coupled to said second portions of both said first and second continuous wood members, for spanning a distance between said at least first and second existing timbers, wherein said spanning timber is substantially T-shaped and includes a spanning timber first body portion substantially perpendicular to a spanning timber second body portion, said spanning timber first body portion extending along at least a portion of longitudinal edges of said first and second continuous wood members, said spanning timber second body portion extending along said second portions of said first and second continuous wood members.
- 2. A system for enlarging a timber, for converting an existing timber fixed in place in an existing structure into an expanded timber, comprising:
- a generally "U" shaped timber expander including an existing timber receiver region adapted for receiving and coupling said existing timber fixed in place in an existing structure to said timber expander, said timber expander comprising:
- a first continuous wood member having first and second portions extending from a central region to first and second longitudinal edges respectively, said first portion extending in a first direction, said second portion extending from said first portion in a second direction opposite from said first direction;
- a second continuous wood member disposed in spaced parallel relationship to said first continuous wood member, said second continuous wood member having first and second portions extending from a central region to first and second longitudinal edges respectively, said first portion of said second continuous wood member extending in said first direction parallel to said first portion of said first continuous member, said second portion of said second continuous wood member extending from said first portion of said second continuous wood member in said second direction opposite from said first direction parallel to said second portion of said first continuous wood member, said parallel first portions of said first and second continuous wood members forming said existing timber receiving region adapted for receiving and coupling said existing timber fixed in place in an existing structure to said timber expander; and
- an expander timber, coupled between said second portions of both said first and second continuous wood members, said expander timber being substantially T-shaped and including an expander timber first body portion substantially perpendicular to an expander timber second body portion, said expander timber first body portion having first and second expander timber first, body portion surfaces disposed against said second longitudinal edges of said first and second continuing wood members, and said expander timber second body portion extending from said second longitudinal edges of said first and second continuous wood members to proximate said central region of said first and second continuous wood members from which said first and second portions of said first and second wood members extend, a surface of said expander timber disposed in said central region perpendicular to said first and second continuous wood members and confronting surfaces of said first portions of said first and second continuous wood member forming said existing timber receiving region, for allowing said generally "U" shaped timber expander to be coupled with said existing timber fixed in place in an existing structure, for expanding at least one dimension of said existing timber, along a length of said existing timber, and converting said existing timber into said expander timber.
- 3. The system of claim 2 wherein each of said first and second continuous members include solid wood.
- 4. The system of claim 2 wherein each of said first and second continuous members include wafered wood.
- 5. The system of claim 2, wherein said generally "U" shaped timber expander is coupled with said existing timber along a length of said existing timber to expand a width of said existing timber.
- 6. A method for enlarging a timber, for converting an existing timber fixed in place in an existing structure into an expanded timber, comprising:
- providing a timber coupler, said timber coupler comprising:
- a first continuous member adjacent a first major planar surface of said existing timber, said first continuous member having first and second portions, said first portion extending in a first direction parallel to said first major planar surface of said existing timber, and said second portion extending from said first portion in a second direction opposite from said first direction; and
- a second continuous member in spaced parallel relationship to said first continuous member, said second continuous member having first and second portions, said first portion extending in said first direction parallel to a second major planar surface of said existing timber and parallel to both said first portion of said first continuous member and to said first major planar surface of said existing timber, said second portion of said second continuous member extending from said first portion of said second continuous member in said second direction opposite from said first direction; and
- coupling said timber coupler to said existing timber fixed in place in an existing structure, said existing timber disposed in an existing timber receiver region formed by said first portions of both said first and second continuous members, said existing timber coupled to said first portions of both said first and second continuous members; and
- coupling said timber coupler to an expander timber, said expander timber disposed in a timber receiver region formed by said second portions of both said first and second continuous members, said expander timber disposed adjacent said existing timber and coupled to said second portions of both said first and second continuous members, for expanding at least one dimension of said existing timber and converting said existing timber into said expanded timber.
