Claims
- 1. A method for time and work tracking comprising:initiating a time and work tracking function on a wireless device;performing an activity on said wireless device;collecting one or more data items relating to said activity; and analyzing said data items.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising transferring said data items from said wireless device to a general purpose computer.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said data items are organized in a log file.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said wireless device comprises a streaming audio/video device, a portable messaging and database device, a general purpose computing device, or a non-computing appliance.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said streaming audio/video device comprises a cellular phone.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein said portable messaging and database device comprises a Personal Data Assistant (PDA).
- 7. The method of claim 4 wherein said general purpose computing device comprises a portable computer with Bluetooth, WiFi, or IEEE connectivity.
- 8. The method of claim 4 wherein said non-computing appliance comprises a dedicated purpose computing device, such as a refrigerator, an automobile, or a microwave.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein said data items are associated with a wireless related activity, an internal activity, or a desktop related activity.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein said collecting further comprises categorizing said data items as a start activity, a switch activity, or a continue activity.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein said data items are included in a memory location.
- 12. The method of claim 1 further comprising collecting one or more timing items related to each of said data items.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein said step of analyzing further comprises:
obtaining one or more rules; and using said rules to determine which of said activities constitute a work activity.
- 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising using said timing items to determine a precise amount of time expended on each of said work activities.
- 15. A time and work tracking apparatus comprising: a time and work tracking function on a wireless device; an activity configured to be performed on said wireless device; one or more data items relating to said activity configured to be collected and analyzed.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising a synchronization mechanism configured to transfer said data items from said wireless device to a general purpose computer.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said data items are organized in a log file.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said wireless device comprises a streaming audio/video device, a portable messaging and database device, a general purpose computing device, or a non-computing appliance.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said streaming audio/video device comprises a cellular phone.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said portable messaging and database device comprises a Personal Data Assistant (PDA).
- 21. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said general purpose computing device comprises a portable computer with Bluetooth, WiFi, or IEEE connectivity.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said non-computing appliance comprises a dedicated purpose computing device, such as a refrigerator, an automobile, or a microwave.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said data items are associated with a wireless related activity, an internal activity, or a desktop related activity.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 15 further comprising a start activity, a switch activity, or a continue activity, wherein said data items are configured to be classified as either said start, said continue, or said switch activities.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said data items are included in a memory location.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 15 further comprising one or more timing items related to each of said data items configured to be collected.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 26 further comprising: one or more rules configured to be obtained; and said rules configured to be used to determine which of said activities constitute a work activity.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein said timing items are configured to be used to determine a precise amount of time expended on each of said work activities.
- 29. A computer program product comprising: a computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied therein for tracking time and work on a wireless device comprising: computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to initiate a time and work tracking function on said wireless device; computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to perform an activity on said wireless device; computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to collect one or more data items relating to said activity; and computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to analyze said data items.
- 30. The computer program product of claim 29, further comprising computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to transfer said data items from said wireless device to a general purpose computer.
- 31. The computer program product of claim 29 wherein said data items are organized in a log file.
- 32. The computer program product of claim 29 wherein said wireless device comprises a streaming audio/video device, a portable messaging and database device, a general purpose computing device, or a non-computing appliance.
- 33. The computer program product of claim 32 wherein said streaming audio/video device comprises a cellular phone.
- 34. The computer program product of claim 32 wherein said portable messaging and database device comprises a Personal Data Assistant (PDA).
- 35. The computer program product of claim 32 wherein said general purpose computing device comprises a portable computer with Bluetooth, WiFi, or IEEE connectivity.
- 36. The computer program product of claim 32 wherein said non-computing appliance comprises a dedicated purpose computing device, such as a refrigerator, an automobile, or a microwave.
- 37. The computer program product of claim 29 wherein said data items are associated with a wireless related activity, an internal activity, or a desktop related activity.

The computer program product of claim 29 wherein said computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to collect further comprises computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to categorize said data items as a start activity, a switch activity, or a continue activity.
- 39. The computer program product of claim 29 wherein said data items are included in a memory location.
- 40. The computer program product of claim 29 further comprising computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to collect one or more timing items related to each of said data items.
- 41. The computer program product of claim 40 wherein said computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to analyze further comprises:computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to obtain one or more rules; andcomputer readable program code configured to cause a computer to use said rules to determine which of said activities constitute a work activity.
- 42. The computer program product of claim 41 further comprising computer readable program code configured to cause a computer to use said timing items to determine a precise amount of time expended on each of said work activities.
- 43. A system for tracking time and work on a wireless device comprising: means for monitoring a user's activity on said wireless device; means for recording said user's activity in a specified location; means for obtaining said user's activity from said specified location; means for using one or more rules to classify said user's activity as a work activity; wherein said means for obtaining uses a timing means to determine an amount of time expended on said work activity.
- 44. The system of claim 43, further comprising means for transferring said user's activity from said specified location on said wireless device to another location on a general purpose computer.
- 45. The system of claim 43 wherein said specified location comprises a log file.
- 46. The system of claim 43 wherein said wireless device comprises a streaming audio/video device, a portable messaging and database device, a general purpose computing device, or a non-computing appliance.
- 47. The system of claim 46 wherein said streaming audio/video device comprises a cellular phone.
- 48. The system of claim 46 wherein said portable messaging and database device comprises a Personal Data Assistant (PDA).
- 49. The system of claim 46 wherein said general purpose computing device comprises a portable computer with Bluetooth, WiFi, or IEEE connectivity.
- 50. The system of claim 46 wherein said non-computing appliance comprises a dedicated purpose computing device, such as a refrigerator, an automobile, or a microwave.
- 51. The system of claim wherein said data items are associated with a wireless related activity, an internal activity, or a desktop related activity.
- 52. The system of claim 43 further comprising means for defining said user's activity as a start activity, a switch activity, or a continue activity.
- 53. The system of claim 43 wherein said specified location are included in a memory location.
- 54. A time and work tracker comprising:a time and work tracking function on a server;one or more activities configured to be performed on a wireless device;a synchronization mechanism configured to transfer information relating to said activities from said wireless device to said server; andone or more data items relating to said information configured to be collected and analyzed on said server;
- 55. The time and work tracker of claim 54 wherein said information is organized in a log file.
- 56. The time and work tracker of claim 55 wherein said wireless device comprises a streaming audio/video device, a portable messaging and database device, a general purpose computing device, or a non-computing appliance.
- 57. The time and work tracker of claim 56 wherein said streaming audio/video device comprises a cellular phone.
- 58. The time and work tracker of claim 56 wherein said portable messaging and database device comprises a Personal Data Assistant (PDA).
- 59. The time and work tracker of claim 56 wherein said general purpose computing device comprises a portable computer with Bluetooth, WiFi, or IEEE connectivity.
- 60. The time and work tracker of claim 56 wherein said non-computing appliance comprises a dedicated purpose computing device, such as a refrigerator, an automobile, or a microwave.
- 61. The time and work tracker of claim 54 wherein said information is associated with a wireless related activity, an internal activity, or a desktop related activity.
- 62. The time and work tracker of claim 54 further comprising a start activity, a switch activity, or a continue activity, wherein said data items are configured to be classified as either said start, said continue, or said switch activities.
- 63. The time and work tracker of claim 54 wherein said data items are included in a memory location.
- 64. The time and work tracker of claim 54 further comprising one or more timing items related to each of said data items configured to be collected.
- 65. The time and work tracker of claim 64 further comprising: one or more rules configured to be obtained on said server; and said rules configured to be used to determine which of said activities constitute a work activity.
- 66. The time and work tracker of claim 65 wherein said timing items are configured to be used to determine a precise amount of time expended on each of said work activities.
- 67. A method for tracking time and work on a wireless device comprising:initiating a time and work tracking function on said wireless device;performing an activity on said wireless device;collecting one or more data items relating to said activity;analyzing said data items on said wireless device; andprinting said data items.
- 68. The method of claim 67 wherein said wireless device comprises a streaming audio/video device, a portable messaging and database device, a general purpose computing device, or a non-computing appliance.
- 69. The method of claim 68 wherein said streaming audio/video device comprises a cellular phone.
- 70. The method of claim 68 wherein said portable messaging and database device comprises a Personal Data Assistant (PDA).
- 71. The method of claim 68 wherein said general purpose computing device comprises a portable computer with Bluetooth, WiFi, or IEEE connectivity.
- 72. The method of claim 68 wherein said non-computing appliance comprises a dedicated purpose computing device, such as a refrigerator, an automobile, or a microwave.
- 73. The method of claim 67 wherein said data items are associated with a wireless related activity, an internal activity, or a desktop related activity.
- 74. The method of claim 67 wherein said collecting further comprises categorizing said data items as a start activity, a switch activity, or a continue activity.
- 75. The method of claim 67 wherein said data items are included in a memory location.
- 76. The method of claim 67 further comprising collecting one or more timing items related to each of said data items.
- 77. The method of claim 76 further comprising:obtaining one or more rules; andusing said rules to determine which of said activities constitute a work activity.
- 78. The method of claim 76 further comprising using said timing items to determine a precise amount of time expended on each of said work activities.
- 79. A method for implementing a time and work tracking function comprising:
obtaining a work activity; converting said work activity to a standard format; determining if said work activity is a start event; creating a first accumulator if said work activity is a start event; determining if said work activity is a switch event; determining a time difference and updating said first accumulator, if said work activity is not a switch event; and creating a new accumulator if a new work activity is obtained.
- 80. The method of claim 79 wherein said time and work tracking function resides on a wireless device.
- 81. The method of claim 79 wherein said time and work tracking function resides partially on a wireless device and partially on a server.
- 82. The method of claim 79 wherein said step of obtaining occurs on said wireless device.
- 83. The method of claim 82 wherein said wireless device comprises a streaming audio/video device, a portable messaging and database device, a general purpose computing device, or a non-computing appliance.
- 84. The method of claim 83 wherein said streaming audio/video device comprises a cellular phone.
- 85. The method of claim 83 wherein said portable messaging and database device comprises a Personal Data Assistant (PDA).
- 86. The method of claim 83 wherein said general purpose computing device comprises a portable computer with Bluetooth, WiFi, or IEEE connectivity.
- 87. The method of claim 83 wherein said non-computing appliance comprises a dedicated purpose computing device, such as a refrigerator, an automobile, or a microwave.
- 88. The method of claim 79 further comprising transferring said work activity to a server.
- 89. The method of claim 88 wherein said steps of converting, determining if said work activity is a start event, creating a first accumulator, determining if said work activity is a switch event, determining a time difference, and creating a new accumulator all take place on said server.
- 90. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a switch event and said switch event comprises an application switch.
- 91. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a start event and said start event comprises an application start.
- 92. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a low level network I/O.
- 93. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a protocol I/O.
- 94. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a remote device poll.
- 95. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a custom device I/O.
- 96. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a start event and said start event comprises an e-mail send or an e-mail receive.
- 97. The method of claim 79 wherein said work activity is a start event and said start event comprises a dialing of a phone number.
