Claims
- 1. A central unit for use in a subscriber line based communication system that facilitates bi-directional data transmission between a central unit and a plurality of remote units over distinct transmission lines that share a binder, the central unit comprising:
- a plurality of transceivers, each transceiver being suitable for communicating with a selected remote unit over a selectd transmission line:
- a synchronizing unit including a superframe clock, a symbol clock and sample clock each of which provide clock signals to each of the transceivers such that each transceiver is arranged to provide periodic downstream communication periods during which the central unit may transmit information to the plurality of remote units and to provide periodic upstream commuinication periods during which the plurality of remote units may trnsmit information to the central unit, the upstream communication periods being arranged such that they do not overlap with the downstream communication periods, whereby data transmissions within the binder are time division duplexed and synchronized such that the transmissions within the binder are transmitted in only one direction at a time.
- 2. A central unit for use in a subscriber line based communication system that facilitates bi-directional data transmission between the central unit and a plurality of remote units over distinct transmission lines that share a binder, the central unit comprising:
- a plurality of transceivers, each transceiver being suitable for communicating with a selected remote unit over a selected transmission line;
- a synchronizing unit for synchronizing clock signals provided to each of the transceivers such that each transceiver is arranged to provide periodic downstream communication periods during which the central unit may transmit information to the plurality of remote units and to provide periodic upstream communication periods during which the plurality of remote units may transmit information to the central unit, the upstream communication periods being arranged such that they do not overlap with the downstream communication periods, whereby data transmissions within the binder are time division duplexed and synchronized such that the transmissions withiin the binder are transmitted in only one direction at a time.
- 3. A central unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the synchronizing unit includes a master superframe clock that provides superfraine clock signals to each of the transceivers.
- 4. A central unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the synchronizing unit includes a master symbol clock that provides syrnbol clock signals to each of the transceivers.
- 5. A central unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the synchronizing unit includes a master sample clock that provides sample clock signals to each of the transceivers.
- 6. A central unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the synchronizing unit further includes a master symbol clock that provides symbol clock signals to each of the transceivers and a master sample clock that provides sample clock signals to each of the transceivers.
- 7. A central unit as recited in claim 6 wherein the synchronizing unit further includes a master oscillator that feeds each of the master superframe clock, the master symbol clock and the master sample clock.
- 8. A central unit as recited in claim 2 wherein each transceiver includes a transmitter and a receiver.
- 9. A central unit as recited in claim 2 wherein each transceiver is arranged to use a modulation scheme selected from the group consisting of Discrete Multi-tone modulation, Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, Carrierless Amplitude and Phase modulation, Quadrature Phase Shift Keying and vesigial sideband modulation.
- 10. A central unit as recited in claim 2 wherein each transceiver is arranged co use a multi-carer modulation scheme.
- 11. A central unit as recited in claim 2 that takes the formn of a master server located at a central office.
- 12. A central unit as recited in claim 2 that takes the form of an optical network unit.
