Claims
- 1. A pneumatic tire and wheel assembly capable of being run in a deflated condition comprising:
- (a) a tire and a wheel upon which the tire is mounted to define therewith an inflation chamber, said wheel having a rim with a pair of opposed annular flanges and means for preventing the tire from becoming dislodged from the wheel when being run deflated, and
- (b) a closed enclosing means comprising a completely closed but openable housing, attached to the rim of the wheel, containing lubricating material for the interior surfaces of the tire, which enclosing means releases the lubricating material onto the contacting interior surfaces of the tire when the assembly is used with the tire in a deflated condition to facilitate relative movement between the contacting interior surfaces of the tire.
- 2. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1 in which the enclosing means is a pressurizable container.
- 3. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 2 in which the lubricating material is releasable from the container by means of a valve sensitive to loss of tire inflation pressure.
- 4. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 2 in which the lubricating material is releasable from the container by rupturing of a membrane.
- 5. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 2 further comprising:
- an annular band projecting radially outwardly from the rim, and said enclosing means comprises a plurality of containers attached to the radially outer end of said band.
- 6. A tire and rim assembly according to claim 5 wherein:
- the rim is crimped and the radially inner edge of the band is held in and by the crimp.
- 7. A tire and rim assembly according to claim 1 further comprising:
- a resilient retaining band positioned on the rim, and said enclosing means comprises a plurality of mouldings spaced from each other along said band.
- 8. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 7, wherein:
- said mouldings are made of a rigid foam-like structure.
- 9. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said enclosing means comprises a plurality of containers positioned on the radially inner side of the rim.
- 10. A tire and rim assembly according to claim 9, further comprising:
- means defining a plurality of holes in the rim, each of said holes providing fluid communication between a respective one of said containers and the inflation chamber, and a plurality of plungers, each of said plungers being positioned in a respective one of said holes to seal the containers and being adapted to open said containers upon deflation of the tire.
- 11. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- the enclosing means comprises a container connected, at its radially inner side, to the rim, and the radially outer side of the container has a plurality of rupturable weak zones therein whereby when the pressure in the inflation chamber goes below a predetermined value, the container will expand, rupture, and release the lubricating material.
- 12. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 11, wherein:
- the container is annular and its radially inner side is positioned on the entire circumference of the rim.
- 13. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said enclosing means comprises a container on the radially inner side of the rim and a flexible tube attached to the container and extending into the inflation chamber.
- 14. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 13, wherein:
- said enclosing means further comprises a plurality of breakable bulkheads positioned in said tube and spaced from each other whereby when the tire is run in a deflated condition, the bulkheads will break to release the lubricating material.
- 15. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said enclosing means comprises:
- a pair of cylinders positioned in the rim,
- a passage, containing the lubricating material, fluidly communicating the cylinders,
- a plunger and a spring diaphragm in one of said cylinders, and
- a plunger and a rupturable diaphragm in the other one of said cylinders.
- 16. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein:
- said enclosing means comprises a bladder positioned on the radially outer side of the rim.
- 17. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 16, wherein:
- said bladder comprises a radially inner part and a radially outer part, said radially inner part containing compressed air and said radially outer part containing the lubricating material.
- 18. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, in which the tire has a tread width which is greater than the width of the rim between the flanges thereon.
- 19. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, in which the tire has an aspect ratio of between 30% and 75%.
- 20. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 19, in which the tire has an aspect ratio of between 55% and 70%.
- 21. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 1, in which the wheel rim is a rim without a well.
- 22. A pneumatic tire and wheel assembly capable of running in a deflated condition comprising:
- (a) a tire and a wheel upon which the tire is mounted to define therewith an inflation chamber, said wheel having a rim with a pair of opposed annular flanges and means for preventing the tire from becoming dislodged from the wheel rim when being run deflated, and
- (b) a closed enclosing means comprising a completely closed but openable housing, attached to the wheel rim and extending into the inflation chamber, containing lubricating material for the interior surfaces of the tire, which enclosing means releases the lubricating material onto the contacting interior surfaces of the tire when the assembly is used with the tire in a deflated condition to facilitate relative movement between the contacting interior surfaces of the tire.
- 23. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 22, further comprising:
- an annular band projecting radially outwardly from the rim, and said enclosing means comprises a plurality of containers attached to the radially outer end of said band.
- 24. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 23, wherein:
- the rim is crimped and the radially inner edge of the band is held in and by the crimp.
- 25. A tire and wheel assembly according to claim 22, further comprising:
- a resilient retaining band positioned on the rim, and said enclosing means comprises a plurality of mouldings spaced from each other along said band.
