Claims
- 1. A tire assembly mounting adapter with an adapter central axis for selectively mounting, on a drive spindle having a prescribed outside spindle diameter, a tire assembly having an inflated pneumatic tire mounted on a vehicular wheel rim with an effective axis of rotation comprising:
- a support member defining a spindle receiving passage therethrough concentric about said adapter central axis and having a prescribed passage diameter substantially equal to the spindle diameter so that the drive spindle is slidably receivable therethrough to removably mount said adapter on the drive spindle with the adapter central axis coinciding with the spindle axis;
- tire assembly positioning means for operatively and removably mounting the tire assembly on said support member independently of the drive spindle so that the effective axis of rotation of the tire assembly coincides with the adapter central axis and said tire assembly is rotatably fixed with respect to said tire assembly positioning means;
- engaging means interconnecting said tire assembly positioning means with said support member while the tire assembly is mounted on said adapter for maintaining a fixed rotational position between said tire assembly positioning means and said support member and thus the tire assembly relative to said support member; and
- keying means positively interconnecting the drive spindle and said support member when said adapter is slidably carried on the drive spindle so that the tire is positively rotated by the drive spindle about the spindle axis with the effective axis of rotation of the tire coinciding with the spindle axis.
- 2. The tire assembly mounting adapter of claim 1 wherein said keying means includes:
- a key engaging slot defined through said support member and opening into said spindle receiving passage along the length thereof; and,
- a drive key fixedly mounted on the drive spindle and adapted to slidably extend into said slot when said support member is slidably received on said drive spindle, said key engaging slot and said drive key constructed and arranged to maintain said support member rotationally fixed on the drive spindle.
- 3. The tire assembly mounting adapter of claim 2 wherein said drive key and said key engaging slot are further constructed and arranged so that engagement between said drive key and said key engaging slot maintains said support member fixed axially along the length of the drive spindle.
- 4. The tire assembly mounting adapter of claim 3 wherein said key engaging slot has a substantially constant width along its length and wherein said drive key is tapered so that said drive key will slidably fit into said key engaging slot to positively locate said support member on the drive spindle.
- 5. The tire assembly mounting adapter of claim 4 further including adapter locking means for selectively locking said support member on the drive spindle while said key engaging slot is engaging said drive key for maintaining a fixed rotational position between said adapter and the drive spindle.
- 6. The tire assembly mounting adapter of claim 1 further comprising:
- a positioning locking member for selectively engaging said support member to fixedly yet removably mount said tire assembly positioning means on said support member;
- wherein said support member further includes abutment means thereon engaging said tire assembly positioning means in opposition to said positioning locking member to limit the movement of said tire assembly positioning means axially of said support member so that said tire assembly positioning means is fixedly yet removably mounted on said support member between said abutment means and said positioning locking member;
- wherein said engaging means further includes interconnecting pin means removably engaging said tire assembly positioning means mounted on said support member to maintain said tire assembly positioning means rotationally fixed with respect to said support member; and
- wherein said tire assembly positioning means is constructed and arranged to locate said tire assembly with respect to said support member so that the effective rotational axis of said tire assembly coincides with the adapter central axis of said support member and to clamp the vehicular wheel rim therein so that the tire assembly is rotationally fixed with respect to said wheel positioning assembly while said wheel positioning assembly is fixedly mounted on said support member between said abutment means and said positioning locking member.
- 7. The tire assembly mounting adapter of claim 6 adapted to locate the tire assembly using the central opening through the central disk on the vehicular wheel rim where the central opening is concentric with the effective rotational axis of the tire assembly wherein said tire assembly positioning means includes:
- a backup member adapted to be removably mounted on said support member and be removably engaged by said interconnecting pin means to rotationally fix said backup member with respect to said support member;
- a clamping member adapted to be removably mounted on said support member;
- a locating cone adapted to be removably mounted on said support member between said backup member and said clamping member; and,
- spring means adapted to be removably mounted on said support member between said backup member and said clamping member,
- said backup member and said clamping member constructed and arranged to be forced toward each other by said abutment means and said positioning locking member to clamp the central disk of the wheel rim therebetween, and said locating cone and said spring means constructed and arranged so that said locating cone engages the central opening through the central disk on the vehicular wheel rim positioned between said backup member and said clamping member and locates the central opening concentrically of the adapter central axis whereby the effective rotational axis of the tire assembly coincides with the adapter central axis.
- 8. The tire assembly mounting adapter of claim 6 adapted to locate the tire assembly using the lug holes through the central disk on the vehicular wheel rim which are arranged concentrically of the effective rotational axis of the tire assembly wherein said tire assembly positioning means includes:
- a pair of adapter plates adapted to be removably mounted on said support member and forced toward each other by said abutment means and said positioning locking member, each of said adapter plates defining a plurality of slots therethrough radially oriented with respect to the adapter central axis when said adapter plate is mounted on said support member, said plurality of slots corresponding in number and circumferential spacing to the lug holes in the vehicular wheel rim; and,
- a plurality of adapter studs constructed and arranged to extend between said adapter plates and engage said slots in said adapter plates, said adapter studs adapted to extend through the lug holes in the vehicular wheel rim and, in combination with said adapter plates, locate the vehicular wheel rim so that the effective axis of rotation of the tire assembly coincides with the adapter central axis and clamp the vehicular wheel rim between said adapter studs and one of said adapter plates while said abutment means and said locking member force said adapter plates toward each other.
