Claims
- 1. A method for carrying out either homopolymerization or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin in the presence of a catalyst system consisting of an organo-aluminum compound and a titanium trichloride catalytic component which is manufactured by pulverizing an eutectic mixture or a crystalline compound consisting of titanium trichloride and aluminum chloride or a pulverized matter obtained therefrom, together with 2-20 parts by weight per 100 parts of said eutectic mixture, crystalline compound or matter obtained therefrom, of an organic compound selected from the group consisting of a carboxylic acid and an anhydride thereof at a temperature within the range of 35.degree.-100.degree. C. in the absence of a solvent and without an extractive process carried out with such a solvent, said method comprising contacting a reactant comprising .alpha.-olefin with said catalyst system at a temperature and pressure and for a time effective for forming a homo- or co-polymerized .alpha.-olefin.
- 2. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein the titanium trichloride catalytic component is further subjected to a heating treatment under reduced pressure.
- 3. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein said organic acid is an organic compound having at least one carboxyl group as functional group within one molecule thereof.
- 4. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein said acid anhydride of the organic acid is the anhydride of a monocarboxylic acid.
- 5. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein the eutectic mixture or crystalline compound consisting of titanium trichloride and aluminum chloride or pulverized matter obtained therefrom is pulverized together with the carboxylic acid or the anhydride thereof at a temperature of 40.degree. to 80.degree. C.
- 6. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein said .alpha.-olefin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene and butene-1.
- 7. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein said organoaluminum compound is selected from the group consisting of trimethyl aluminum, triethyl aluminum, tri-n-propyl aluminum, tri-n-butyl aluminum, tri-isobutyl aluminum, tri-n-hexyl aluminum, tri-n-pentyl aluminum, tri-n-octyl aluminum, tri-n-decyl aluminum, tri-n-dodecyl aluminum, tri-n-hexadecyl aluminum, diethyl aluminum chloride, di-n-propyl aluminum chloride, diisobutyl aluminum chloride, methyl aluminum sesquichloride, ethyl aluminum dichloride, isobutyl aluminum dichloride, diethyl aluminum iodide, diethyl aluminum hydride and diisobutyl aluminum hydride.
- 8. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein said homo- and co-polymerization are carried out with a method selected from the group consisting of a suspension polymerization method, a bulk polymerization method and a gaseous phase polymerization method.
- 9. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 8 wherein said suspension polymerization is carried out with a solvent selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbon, cyclic hydrocarbon and aromatic hydrocarbon.
- 10. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 9 wherein said aliphatic hydrocarbon is selected from the group consisting of heptane, hexane and octane.
- 11. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 9 wherein said cyclic hydrocarbon is selected from the group consisting of cyclohexane and cycloheptane.
- 12. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 9 wherein said aromatic hydrocarbon is selected from the group consisting of benzene, toluene and xylene.
- 13. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein the polymerization temperature range is from 20.degree. to 200.degree. C.
- 14. A method for homo- or co-polymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 wherein the polymerization pressure range is from 1 to 100 atm.
- 15. A method for homo- or copolymerization of .alpha.-olefin according to claim 1 further including the step of heat treating said titanium trichloride catalytic component at a temperature of up to 120.degree. C. under reduced pressure.
