- a pivotable closure member capable of closing said opening and being capable of compressing the tobacco into the conduit.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 additionally comprising a metering tube for forming a substantially vertical tobacco column, said metering tube being positioned for feeding tobacco into said opening in said upper wall of said conduit.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 additionally comprising steam injecting means for injecting steam into the metering tube at at least one selected vertical location in said metering tube.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2 additionally comprising tobacco column dividing means associated with the metering tube and selectively engageable with the tobacco column in at least one predetermined vertical location for dividing the tobacco column into an upper portion positioned above and supported by the dividing means and a lower portion positioned below the dividing means; and a blocking member associated with the metering tube and engageable with the tobacco column at a vertical location below the dividing means for supporting the tobacco column when said dividing means is out of engagement with the column and disengageable with the tobacco column for releasing the lower portion of the tobacco column below the dividing means.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said tobacco column dividing means comprises a member having a plurality of closely spaced tines arranged for reciprocating movement between a first location outside said metering tube and a second location within said metering tube.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 additionally comprising adjustment means for providing selective engagement of said tobacco column dividing means with the metering tube at a plurality of vertical locations.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said blocking member comprises a rotary air lock valve.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said rotary air lock valve comprises a vaneless rotary valve arranged for intermittent operation.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a spool positioned at said downstream end of said conduit and comprising two cylindrical end members joined by a connecting rod, said treating zone comprising an annular space surrounding said connecting rod between said end members.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 9 further comprising a cylindrical shell, said spool being arranged for reciprocating movement among at least a loading position at the downstream end of said conduit and an impregnating position within said cylindrical shell.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 10 further comprising an elastomeric sealing ring carried in an annular groove on the periphery of each cylindrical end member, means for deforming the sealing rings radially outwardly for circumferential contact with the inside periphery of said shell when said spool is in the treating position, and at least one annular member carried on a portion of the periphery of each of the cylindrical end members and having a circumference greater than the end member and being axially adjacent said sealing ring carried on said end member.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising:
- a second conduit mounted in opposed coaxial relation to said conduit;
- means mounted for reciprocating movement in said second conduit between a retracted position and an extended position and being adapted for moving tobacco through the second conduit and compressing the tobacco into said treating zone at a downstream end of the second conduit when in the extended position;
- an opening in an upper wall of the second conduit for introducing tobacco into the second conduit at a location between the location corresponding to retracted position and extended position; and
- a pivotable closure member associated with said second conduit capable of closing said opening and being capable of compressing the tobacco into the second conduit.
- 13. An apparatus for compressing tobacco into an impregnation zone, comprising:
- a pair of opposed conduits having open ends;
- spool means mounted for reciprocal movement among at least a first position located between open ends of said opposed conduits, and an impregnation position;
- said spool means comprising first and second cylindrical end members, a connecting rod extending between said first and second end members, said end members and said connecting rod defining an annular space around said connecting rod;
- tobacco compressing means mounted for reciprocating movement within each of said conduits between a retracted position and an extended position for moving tobacco through the conduit and compressing the tobacco into said annular space of said spool means; and
- said tobacco compressing means each comprising a semi-cylindrical end face, said end faces being sized and shaped to cooperatively form a cylinder around said annular space of said spool.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein each of said conduits comprise an opening in an upper wall thereof for receiving tobacco at a location between the location corresponding to said retracted position and said extended position.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 additionally comprising a pair of metering tubes for forming substantially vertical tobacco columns, said metering tube being positioned for feeding tobacco into said openings in said upper walls of said conduits.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 additionally comprising steam injecting means for injecting steam into each metering tube at least one selected vertical location therein.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 15 additionally comprising tobacco column dividing means associated with each metering tube and selectively engageable with the tobacco column therein in at least one predetermined vertical location for dividing the tobacco column into an upper portion positioned above and supported by the dividing means and a lower portion positioned below the dividing means; and a blocking member associated with each metering tube and engageable with the tobacco column at a vertical location below the dividing means for supporting the tobacco column when said dividing means is out of engagement with the column and disengageable with the tobacco column for releasing the lower portion of the tobacco column below the dividing means.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein said blocking member comprises a rotary air lock valve.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein said rotary air lock valve comprises a vaneless rotary valve arranged for intermittent operation.
