Claims
- 1. A method for controlling variable water volume flush operations in a gravity flush toilet system, said method comprising:
- storing water in a tank having a float buoyant upon the tank water;
- opening a flush valve to emit tank water into a fixture;
- closing the flush valve when the float descends; and
- changing the weight of the float in order to alter the time that the flush valve remains open;
- said changing step including varying the water level in a bias chamber of the float by siphoning water from the bias chamber through a siphon or selectively disabling the siphon;
- said disabling step includes opening and closing an air vent passage communicating with the siphon.
- 2. A method for controlling a variable water volume flush cycle in a gravity flush toilet system, said method comprising:
- storing water in a tank having a float buoyant upon the tank water;
- normally maintaining a bias chamber in the float full of water;
- initiating the flush cycle by opening a flush valve to emit tank water into a fixture and by positioning a control member in either a first position corresponding to a higher volume flushing operation or a second position corresponding to a lower volume flushing operation;
- closing the flush valve when the float descends; and
- controlling the weight of the float in accordance with the position of the control member in order to alter the time required for descent of the float, thereby to vary the time that the flush valve remains open;
- said controlling step including selectively either (i) removing a portion of water from the bias chamber to decrease the weight of the float for a longer and higher water volume flushing operation or (ii) retaining the water in the bias chamber to maintain the increased weight of the float for a shorter and lower water volume flushing operation.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said removing step includes siphoning water from the bias chamber with a siphon.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said retaining step includes disabling the sipon.
- 5. A method of compensating for water supply pressure changes and for providing fixture trap reseal water in operating a gravity flush toilet comprising:
- opening a flush valve to release tank water from a tank into a fixture for flushing the fixture;
- opening a fill valve in response to a descending tank water level to admit water from the water supply into the tank;
- increasing the weight of a float in the tank by adding water to a refill chamber on the float with part of the water from the fill valve;
- closing the flush valve when the float descends to a predetermined level;
- limiting the water level in the refill chamber by discharging water from the refill chamber over a weir;
- permitting a further increase in water level by blocking the weir as the water level in the tank increases; and
- siphoning water through a tank overflow tube from the refill chamber to the fixture trap.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 5 wherein said closing step includes engaging the flush valve with the float.
