- 2. The tool-changing device according to claim 1, wherein said tool storage locations are arranged in a two-dimensional array, and said gripper part of said tool selector is movable in a direction perpendicular to said array in order to engage with and disengage from the tools.
- 3. The tool-changing device according to claim 2, wherein said direction of movement of said gripper part is parallel to said pick-up axis.
- 4. The tool-changing device according to claim 1, wherein said tool selector comprises carriage means movable over said tool store, and said gripper part is mounted on said carriage means for movement relative thereto in a direction parallel to said pick-up axis.
- 5. The tool-changing device according to claim 4, wherein said gripper part is movable between at least two positions in said direction parallel to said pick-up axis, one said position being for transporting the tools along passageways in said tool store and for moving the tools into and out of said storage locations, another said position being for movement between said tool storage locations over said tool store.
- 6. The tool-changing device according to claim 5, further comprising an elevator device disposed at said pick-up axis, and wherein said gripper part includes a shuttle which is detachably mounted on said carriage means and which grips the tools during their transference, said shuttle being transferred from said carriage means to said elevator device while said gripper part is disposed at said one position for movement to said tool exchange location, and said elevator device is moved from a rest position below said one position so as to engage said shuttle from below.
- 7. The tool-changing device according to claim 4, further comprising an elevator device disposed at said pick-up axis, and wherein said gripper part includes a shuttle which is detachably mounted on said carriage means and which grips the tools during their transference, said shuttle being transferred from said carriage means to said elevator for movement to said tool exchange location.
- 8. The tool-changing device according to claim 7, further comprising an interlock which prevents said elevator device from raising said shuttle to said tool exchange location unless said shuttle is first disengaged from said carriage means and engaged with said elevator device.
- 9. The tool-changing device according to claim 1, wherein said tool store is constructed from modules and its size can be varied by selectively adding and removing said modules.
- 10. The tool-changing device according to claim 9, wherein said tool store is composed of at least two sections which can be separated to allow at least one further section to be inserted therebetween.
- 11. The tool-changing device according to claim 10, wherein said tool storage locations are arranged in parallel rows, and adjacent ones of said sections are separated longitudinally of said rows.
- 12. The tool-changing device according to claim 1, wherein the tools comprise relatively small-sized tools and relatively large-sized tools, and said tool storage locations are divided into a first set which are adapted to receive said relatively small-sized tools and which are spaced a predetermined distance apart, and a second set which are adapted to receive said relatively large-sized tools and which are spaced apart by a distance greater than said predetermined distance.
- 13. The tool-changing device according to claim 12, wherein said tool storage locations are arranged in a plurality of rows, and said second set of storage locations are disposed in a single one of said rows.
- 14. The tool-changing device according to claim 12, wherein said tool storage locations of said second set are spaced apart by twice said predetermined distance.
- 15. The tool-changing device according to claim 12, wherein some tool storage locations of said first set are interposed between said tool storage locations of said second set.
- 16. A machine tool comprising a work head, first moving means operative to move said work head in a first direction, second moving means operative to move said work head in a second direction arranged transversely to said first direction, a fixed tool store, a plurality of fixed tool storage locations provided in said tool store, each said fixed tool storage location being adapted to receive a respective tool therein, a pick-up axis arranged parallel to said first direction, a tool selector including a gripper part operative to grip a tool for transference to and from said fixed tool store, and third moving means operative to move said gripper part between any one of the said fixed tool storage locations and a tool exchange location on said pick-up axis with permissive variation of the position of said tool exchange location on said pick-up axis in accordance with the position of said work head in said first direction, and means in association with said third moving means to hold said gripper part at said tool exchange location independently of movement of said work head in said second direction, in readiness for transference of said tool to said work head.
- 17. The machine tool according to claim 16, further comprising a beam which carries said work head, said second moving means being operative to move said work head along said beam in said second direction.
- 18. The machine tool according to claim 17, wherein said pick-up axis is disposed adjacent to one end of said beam.
- 19. The machine tool according to claim 17, further comprising a tool transfer device operative to transfer tools between said tool exchange location and said work head, said tool transfer device including a tool gripper and means operative to move said tool gripper along said beam.
