Claims
- 1. A computer readable medium comprising one or more programs for carrying out a method for determining a patient's tooth shade, which method comprises the steps of: generating an electronic image of a patient's tooth wherein the image includes color information representative of the patient's tooth color; storing color information representative of a plurality of tooth shades; and directly comparing the color information of the electronic image with the stored tooth shade color information to identify one or more tooth shades having a color or combined color that corresponds to the patient's tooth color.
- 2. The medium of claim 1 stored on a disk or hard drive.
- 3. The medium of claim 1, wherein the program(s) also carry out a method step of displaying the color information of the image.
- 4. The medium of claim 3, wherein the displayed data includes RGB chromaticities of the color image.
- 5. The medium of claim 1, wherein the program(s) also carry out a method step of electronically storing the identified tooth shade(s) of the patient's tooth for use at a later time.
- 6. The medium of claim 1, wherein the program(s) also carry out a method step of identifying tooth shade(s) by electronically comparing the color information of the electronic image to a plurality of electronically stored tooth shades.
- 7. A computer readable medium storing one or more computer programs for determining a patient's tooth shade comprising: procedure codes for receiving one or more electronic images of a patient's tooth from an external source, wherein the images include color information representative of the patient's tooth shade; procedure codes for storing color information representative of a plurality of tooth shades; and procedure codes for electronically comparing the color information of the image with the stored tooth shade color information to identify one or more tooth shades having a combined color that corresponds to the patient's tooth shade.
- 8. The medium of claim 7, further comprising procedure codes for uploading one or more electronic images a patient's tooth from an external source, wherein the images include electronic color information representative of the patient's tooth.
- 9. The medium of claim 7, wherein the electronic color information of the image is obtained from a camera.
- 10. A system for determining the tooth shade of a patient's tooth comprising: a camera for electronically capturing an image of the patient's tooth, the image including electronic color information representative of tooth color, and a shade analyzer sub-system in electrical communication with the camera, the shade analyzer subsystem including (i) color processing means for determining the color of the patient's tooth directly from the electronic color information of the image provided by the camera, (ii) storage means storing shade information representative of a plurality of tooth shades, each of the tooth shades corresponding to a different tooth color, (iii) color correlation means for comparing the color of the patient's tooth to the plurality of tooth shades and for identifying a tooth shade with a color corresponding to the color of the patient's tooth, and (iv) means for communicating the identified tooth shade to a user of the system.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the communicating means includes display means for observing the identified tooth shade that corresponds to the patient's tooth.
- 12. A system for determining the tooth shade of a patient's tooth comprising: a camera for electronically capturing an image of the patient's tooth, the image including electronic color information representative of tooth color, and a shade analyzer sub-system operatively associated with the camera, the shade analyzer subsystem including: (i) color processing means for determining the color of the patient's tooth directly from the electronic color information of the image provided by the camera, (ii) storage means storing shade information representative of a plurality of tooth shades, each of the tooth shades corresponding to a different tooth color, (iii) color correlation means for comparing the color of the patient's tooth to the plurality of tooth shades and for identifying a tooth shade with a color corresponding to the color of the patient's tooth, and (iv) means for communicating the identified tooth shade to a user of the system.
- 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the electronically captured image and electronic color information of the patient's tooth are provided on a diskette, the shade analyzer sub-system is provided on a computer, and the image and color information on the diskette is processed by the computer to identify the tooth shade that corresponds to the patient's tooth.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the computer includes a display for viewing the identified tooth shade that corresponds to the patient's tooth color.
- 15. The system of claim 12, wherein the shade information stored in the storage means is obtained from the same camera used to obtain the electronic image of the tooth, a camera that is similar to the camera used to obtain the electronic image of the tooth, or by a camera that is calibrated to within an acceptable margin to the camera used to obtain the electronic image of the tooth so color matching of the image and the plurality of tooth shades is calibrated automatically.
- 16. The system of claim 10, wherein the shade information stored in the storage means is obtained from the same camera used to obtain the electronic image of the tooth, a camera that is similar to the camera used to obtain the electronic image of the tooth, or by a camera that is calibrated to within an acceptable margin to the camera used to obtain the electronic image of the tooth so color matching of the image and the plurality of tooth shades is calibrated automatically.
