Claims
- 1. A supplemental torque apparatus for a lean-burn engine having a crankshaft, the supplemental torque apparatus comprising:an alternator and a starter each operatively connected to the crankshaft of the engine, said alternator being operable to charge a battery during a first predetermined time period and said starter being operable to supply additional torque to the engine crankshaft at other than said first predetermined time period, wherein said first predetermined time period includes operation of the engine in a first rich mode; means for determining a first state of charge of said battery during said first time period and a second state of charge of said battery at other than said first time period; and torque control algorithm means for controlling the operation of said starter at other than said first time period based at least on the second determined state of charge of said battery, such that at other than said first time period to bring the second determined state of charge of said battery below a first threshold value.
- 2. The supplemental torque apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first threshold value is determined based on the first determined state of charge and a maximum amount of charge transferred to said battery during said first time period.
- 3. A supplemental torque apparatus for a lean-burn engine having a crankshaft, wherein the engine is operable in a plurality of modes including lean modes characterized by combustion of lean air-fuel mixtures and rich modes characterized by combustion of rich air-fuel mixtures, the supplemental torque apparatus comprising:a battery; a starter operatively connected to the crankshaft and to said battery; an alternator operatively connected to the crankshaft and said battery, said alternator being operable to charge said battery during a first time period and said starter being operable to supply additional torque to the crankshaft at a second time period other than said first time period; means for determining a first state of charge of said battery during said first time period and a second state of charge of said battery at the second time period; and torque control algorithm means for controlling the operation of said alternator and said starter based at least on the second determined state of charge of said battery, such that said starter supplies additional torque to the engine during the second time period to bring the second determined state of charge of said battery below a first threshold value.
- 4. The supplemental torque apparatus of claim 3, wherein the first threshold value is determined based on the first determined state of charge and a maximum amount of charge transferred to said battery during said first time period.
