Claims
- 1. A power transfer system for a motor vehicle having an engine and first and second drivelines, comprising:a first drive assembly adapted to transmit drive torque from the engine to the first driveline; a second drive assembly adapted for connection to the second driveline; a transfer clutch for selectively transferring drive torque from said first drive assembly to said second drive assembly; and an electric operator for engaging said transfer clutch, said electric operator including a threaded rotary member, a threaded linearly moveable member, and balls disposed between said threads, said linearly moveable member applying a clutch engagement force on said transfer clutch in response to rotation of said rotary member.
- 2. A The power transfer system of claim 1 wherein said electric operator includes an electric motor having a rotary output shaft defining said threaded rotary member, and said threaded linearly moveable member is a cylindrical screw positioned concentrically relative to said motor output shaft.
- 3. The power transfer system of claim 2 wherein said transfer clutch includes a plurality of first clutch plates operably connected to said first drive assembly and a plurality of second clutch plates interleaved with said first clutch plates and operably connected to said second drive assembly such that actuation of said electric motor causes said first and second clutch plates to move into frictional driving engagement.
- 4. The power transfer system of claim 1, further comprising:a sensor for detecting an operating characteristic of the motor vehicle; and a controller for receiving an input signal from said sensor and generating an output for actuating said electric operator in response to said sensor input signal.
- 5. The power transfer system of claim 1 wherein said first drive assembly is located at a rearward portion of the motor vehicle and the second drive assembly is located at a forward portion of the vehicle.
- 6. The power transfer system of claim 1 wherein said first drive assembly includes a first shaft, wherein said second drive assembly includes a second shaft, and wherein said transfer clutch is operably disposed for transferring drive torque from said first shaft to said second shaft.
- 7. A power transfer system for a motor vehicle having an engine and first and second sets of wheels, comprising:a transfer mechanism for transmitting drive torque from the engine to the first set of wheels and selectively transmitting drive torque to the second set of wheels through a transfer clutch; and a ball screw actuator including an electric motor having a threaded output shaft, a threaded lead screw concentrically aligned with said threaded output shaft, and a plurality of balls positioned within said threads between said output shaft and said lead screw such that rotation of said output shaft axially translates said lead screw to produce a linearly directed output force, said linearly directed output force being exerted on said transfer clutch for transmitting drive torque to the second set of wheels.
- 8. A The power transfer system of claim 7 wherein said electric motor is mounted concentrically about an output shaft of said transfer mechanism.
- 9. The power transfer system of claim 7 further comprising:a sensor for detecting an operating characteristic of the motor vehicle; and a controller for receiving an input signal from said sensor and generating an output for actuating said electric motor in response to said sensor input signal.
- 10. The power transfer system of claim 7 wherein said transfer mechanism includes a first member driven by the engine, and a second member coupled to the second set of wheels, and wherein said transfer clutch is a clutch pack that includes first plates fixed to said first member and second plates fixed to said second member, said first and second plates interleaved to form said clutch pack.
- 11. A transfer case for distributing torque between first and second drivelines of a motor vehicle, comprising:a first output arrangement adapted to transfer drive torque from the engine to the first driveline; a second output arrangement adapted to drive the second driveline; a control system including a sensor for sensing an operating characteristic of the vehicle and controller for receiving an input signal from said sensor and generating an electric output signal in response thereto; a transfer clutch having a clutch pack of interleaved first and second clutch plates operably connected respectively to said first and second output arrangements; and a power-operated actuator adapted to be activated by said output signal of said controller, said actuator including an electric motor having a rotatable output member, a drive member arranged concentrically with said output member and adapted to move linearly in response to rotation of said motor output member for applying a clutch engagement force on said clutch pack, and balls retained in threads formed between said motor output member and said drive member.
- 12. The transfer case for claim 11 wherein said output member of said electric motor is an output shaft having external threads formed thereon, and said drive member is a cylindrical lead screw having internal threads, said balls being disposed between said external threads of said output shaft and said internal threads of said lead screw.
- 13. The transfer case of claim 11 wherein said first output arrangement includes a first output shaft, said second output arrangement includes a second output shaft, and said transfer clutch includes a clutch drum operably connected to said second shaft with said first clutch plates driven by said first output shaft and said second clutch plates coupled to said clutch drum.
- 14. The transfer case of claim 13 wherein said power-operated actuator encircles said first output shaft.
- 15. A transfer case for transferring drive torque betweena primary driveline and a secondary driveline, comprising: a first output adapted to drive the primary driveline; a second output adapted to drive the secondary driveline; and a controllable coupling between said first output and said second output including a clutch assembly having a first set of clutch plates coupled to said first output and interleave with a second set of clutch plates operably coupled to said second output, and an electric operator for selectively effecting torque transfer between said first and second outputs, said electric operator including a motor having a fixed stator and a bi-directionally rotating output member, a bi-directionally translating lead screw for selectively engaging said interleaved clutch plates, and balls disposed in threads formed between said motor output member and said lead screw.
