Claims
- 1. An apparatus for injection of an imaging contrast fluid medium having a viscosity into a plurality of patients during medical procedures, comprising:
- (a) a supply source of an imaging contrast fluid medium which is preselected from several fluid media, said several fluid media having different vicosities;
- (b) metering means connected to said supply source for removing measured quantities of the imaging contrast fluid medium therefrom;
- (c) imaging contrast fluid medium receiving means connected to said metering means for receiving the measured quantities from the metering means;
- (d) pressurizing means associated with said fluid medium receiving means for pressurizing the imaging contrast fluid medium to a selected pressure for patient infusions wherein said receiving means comprises a reusable fluid path between said metering means and said pressurizing meant;
- (e) contamination prevention means located between said fluid medium supply source and the patient precluding back flow of material from the patient to said supply source for preventing contamination of said supply source and any reusable part of said fluid path;
- (f) electronic control means connected to said metering means providing for passage of measured quantities of fluid medium through said metering means; and
- (g) disposable fluid path means for each of said plurality of patients for conducting pressurized fluid medium from said pressurizing means to each of said patients and for preventing cross-contamination between patients.
- 2. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the measured quantity of fluid medium is inserted into a dose container for use with an injection mechanism.
- 3. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said contamination prevention means includes unidirectional flow means for allowing passage of fluid medium from said pressurizing means only to the patient and not in a reverse direction.
- 4. An apparatus as defined in claim 3 wherein said unidirectional flow means is a valve.
- 5. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said pressurizing means is a pump.
- 6. An apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said pump is a gear pump.
- 7. An apparatus as defined in claim 6 further comprising means for supplying additional fluids to the fluid path means.
- 8. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said electronic control system includes means for use with a dose container to identify the contents thereof.
- 9. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said supply source is a bulk container including means for indicating volume and concentration of the fluid medium contained therein.
- 10. An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the electronic control means is programmed with patient information, procedure information and fluid medium information to select the desired concentration and volume of fluid medium required for the individual patient.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said disposable fluid path means comprises a first disposable fluid path and a second disposable fluid path, said apparatus further comprising:
- means for disconnecting said pressurizing means from said first disposable fluid path connected to a first patient and for connecting said pressurizing means to said second disposable fluid path connected to a second patient.
- 12. An apparatus for injection of a fluid medium having a viscosity into a plurality of patients during medical procedures, comprising:
- (a) a supply source of a fluid medium which is preselected from several fluid media, said several fluid media having different viscosities;
- (b) metering means connected to said supply source for removing measured quantities of the fluid medium therefrom;
- (c) a supply source of a diluent having a first viscosity for use to alter the concentration and viscosity of said fluid medium having a second viscosity, different from said first viscosity;
- (d) metering means connected to said diluent source for removing measured quantities of diluent therefrom;
- (e) means for combining the quantities of fluid medium and diluent that are removed from the respective sources;
- (f) fluid medium receiving means connected to said combining means for receiving the measured quantities from the metering means;
- (g) pressurizing means associated with said fluid medium receiving means for pressurizing the fluid medium to a selected pressure for patient infusion, wherein said receiving means comprises a reusable fluid path between said metering means and said pressurizing means;
- (h) contamination prevention means located between said fluid medium supply source and the patient precluding back flow of material from the patient to said supply source for preventing contamination of said supply source and any reusable part of said fluid path;
- (i) electronic control means connected to said metering means providing for passage of measured quantities of fluid medium through said metering means; and
- (j) disposable fluid path means for each of said plurality of patients for conducting pressurized fluid medium from said pressurizing means to each of said plurality of patients and for preventing cross-contamination between patients.
- 13. An apparatus as defined in claim 12 wherein the measured quantity of fluid medium is inserted into a dose container for use with pressurizing means.
- 14. An apparatus as defined in claim 12 wherein said means for combining the fluid medium and diluent quantities is a static mixer.
- 15. An apparatus as defined in claim 14 wherein the static mixer is a vane mixer for mixing of fluid medium and diluent quantities of dissimilar viscosities.
- 16. An apparatus of claim 3 wherein said apparatus further includes:
- sensing means for measuring concentration of combined fluid medium and diluent.
- 17. An apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said disposable fluid path means comprises a first disposable fluid path and a second disposable fluid path, said apparatus further comprising:
- means for disconnecting said pressurizing means from said first disposable fluid path connected to a first patient and for connecting said pressurizing means to said second disposable fluid path connected to a second patient.
- 18. An apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said means for combining functions independently of the viscosities of the fluid medium or diluent, and combined fluid medium and diluent has a third viscosity which is dependent on concentrations of said fluid medium and said diluent therein.
- 19. An apparatus for injection of a plurality of patients with a fluid medium in medical procedures, comprising:
- (a) a supply source of a pre-selected first fluid medium;
- (b) metering means connected to said first fluid medium supply source for removing measured quantities of the fluid medium therefrom;
- (c) a supply source of a second fluid medium for use to alter the properties of said first fluid medium;
- (d) metering means operably connected to said second fluid medium source for removing measured quantities of said second fluid medium therefrom;
- (e) means for thoroughly combining the quantities of said first fluid medium and said second fluid medium that are removed from the respective sources;
- (f) fluid medium receiving means connected to said combining means to receive the measured quantities from the combining means;
- (g) pressurizing means associated with said fluid medium receiving means for pressurizing the fluid medium to a selected pressure for patient infusion, wherein said receiving means comprises a reusable fluid oath between said metering means and said pressurizing means;
- (h) contamination prevention means located between said fluid medium supply source and the patient for precluding back flow of material from the patient to said supply source to prevent contamination of said supply source and any reusable part of said fluid path; and
- (i) disposable fluid path means for each of said plurality of patients for conducting the pressurized fluid medium from said pressurizing means to each of said plurality of patients and for preventing cross-contamination between patients.
- 20. An apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said disposable fluid path means comprises a first disposable fluid path and a second disposable fluid path, said apparatus further comprising:
- means for disconnecting said pressurizing means from said first disposable fluid path connected to a first patient and for connecting said pressurizing means to said second disposable fluid path connected to a second patient.
