Claims
- 1. A curable thermosetting resin system for forming a toughened single phase cured matrix resin, said resin system consisting essentially of:
- A. a base resin system consisting essentially of
- (i) one or more thermosetting resin monomers selected from the group consisting of the bismaleimide resins, epoxy resins, cyanate resins, and mixtures thereof:
- (ii) at least one curing agent
- (iii) optionally catalysts; and
- (iv) optionally at least one dissolved thermoplastic in an amount effective to assist the toughness of the single phase cured matrix resin;
- B. optionally, particulate engineering thermoplastics in an amount of from 10 to 30 weight percent based on the total resin system weight; and
- C. from about 1 percent to about 10 percent by weight relative to the total system weight of preformed functionalized, lightly crosslinked elastomer particles having a T.sub.g of less than 10.degree. C., and a particle size of from about 2 .mu.m to about 70 .mu.m wherein said elastomer particles remain in substantially particulate form.
- 2. The resin system of claim 1 wherein said functionalized elastomer has a T.sub.g of less than 0.degree. C.
- 3. The resin system of claim 1 wherein said functionalized elastomer contains carboxyl, carboxamide, epoxy amine, or anhydride functionality.
- 4. The resin system of claim 2 wherein said functionalized elastomer contains carboxyl, carboxamide, epoxy, amine, or anhydride functionality.
- 5. The resin system of claim 1 wherein the base resin (A) comprises in major part, one or more epoxy resins.
- 6. The resin system of claim 1 wherein the resin system contains from about 5 weight percent to about 15 weight percent of a dissolved thermoplastic.
- 7. The resin system of claim 5 wherein the resin system contains from about 5 weight percent to about 15 weight percent of a dissolved thermoplastic.
- 8. The resin system of claim 1 wherein said resin system contains from about 5 weight percent to about 30 weight percent of a particulate thermoplastic.
- 9. The resin system of claim 5 wherein said resin system contains from about 10 weight percent to about 30 weight percent of a particulate thermoplastic.
- 10. The resin system of claim 6 wherein said resin system contains from about 10 weight percent to about 30 weight percent of a particulate thermoplastic.
- 11. The resin system of claim 8 wherein said particulate thermoplastic is a differentially soluble thermoplastic.
- 12. The resin system of claim 9 wherein said particulate thermoplastic is a differentially soluble thermoplastic.
- 13. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 1.
- 14. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 2.
- 15. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 4.
- 16. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 5.
- 17. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 6.
- 18. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 9.
- 19. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 10.
- 20. A fiber-reinforced prepreg, comprising:
- (a) from 20 to about 80 percent by weight of fibrous reinforcement; and
- (b) from 80 to about 20 percent by weight of the resin system of claim 11.
- 21. The resin system of claim 1 wherein said thermosetting resin monomer A.(i) is selected from the group consisting of bismaleimide resins, cyanate resins, and mixtures thereof.
- 22. The resin system of claim 2 wherein said thermosetting resin monomer A.(i) is selected from the group consisting of bismaleimide resins, cyanate resins, and mixtures thereof.
