Claims
- 1. A tower unit for a computer system which includes a chassis for mounting a plurality of data storage units, wherein the tower unit is located on a horizontal reference plane, comprising:
- at least one data storage unit for receiving and supporting generally planar and removable storage media, said data storage units including opposing side walls and having an upright position wherein said data storage units receive and support said planar removable storage media in a plane being generally parallel to the horizontal reference plane when said data storage units are in said upright position;
- each of said data storage units having flanges attached to each said data storage unit opposing side wall wherein said flanges extend outwardly from and normal to said data storage unit side walls;
- said chassis comprising a generally rectangular box frame including front and rear walls connected with opposing side walls wherein said front, rear and side walls being generally normal to the horizontal reference plane;
- said front wall including a data storage bay which includes a bay face and a recess for receiving said data storage units, said bay being angled upwards at an angle with respect to the horizontal reference plane; and
- angled mount means positioned within said frame and forming part of said opposing side walls of the chassis for mounting said data storage units at said upward angle, said data storage units being generally in an upright position but angled from the horizontal plane at said upward angle, to allow greater ease of access to aid data storage unit users in the entry and removal of said planar removable storage media, wherein said angle mount means comprises a series of internally mounted flange sets mounted on said opposing walls of said chassis which extend inwardly towards said recess for receiving said data storage units and for mounting each of said data storage units at said upward angle.
- 2. The tower unit set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said inwardly extending flange sets includes:
- a first substantially straight inwardly extending flange for receiving and supporting said outwardly extending data storage unit flange; and
- angled, inwardly extending camming tabs for receiving said outwardly extending data storage unit flange and for guiding said data storage unit flange into a final position at said upward angle.
- 3. The tower unit set forth in claim 2, wherein:
- said angled camming tabs include first and second camming tabs positioned adjacently to each other and in alignment with said substantially straight inwardly extending flange at said upwardly angled position.
- 4. The tower unit set forth in claim 3, wherein:
- said angled camming tabs include surfaces directed at an open angle with respect to said data storage unit outwardly extending flange for receiving and guiding said outwardly extending flange and said data storage units into a final resting position at said upward angle.
- 5. The tower unit set forth in claim 3, wherein:
- each of said angled camming tabs include offset but opposing cam surfaces which are curved in order to provide surface area for guiding said data storage unit outwardly extending flange into position and surface area for receiving and maintaining said outwardly extending flange in a final position at said upward angle.
- 6. The tower unit set forth inc claim 4, wherein:
- each of said outwardly extending flanges of said data storage units include a first flange portion which extends outwardly from said data storage units and a second flange portion integrally formed with said first flange portion and substantially perpendicular thereto for mounting against said data storage units, said first flange position having a first surface wider than the second surface;
- one of said first and second angled camming tabs extending further inwardly than the other tab for receiving said first, wider surface of said first flange portion.
- 7. A tower unit for a computer system which includes a chassis for mounting a plurality of data storage units, wherein the tower unit is located on a horizontal reference plane, comprising:
- at least one data storage unit for receiving and supporting generally planar and removable storage media, said data storage units including opposing side walls and having an upright position wherein said data storage units receive and support said planar removable storage media in a plane being generally parallel to the horizontal reference plane when said data storage units are in said upright position;
- said chassis comprising a generally rectangular box frame including front and rear walls connected with opposing side walls wherein said front, rear and side walls being generally normal to the horizontal reference plane;
- said front wall including a data storage bay which includes a bay face and a recess for receiving said data storage units, said bay being angled upwards at an angle with respect to the horizontal reference plane;
- angled mount means positioned within said frame and forming part of said opposing side walls of the chassis for mounting said data storage units at said upward angle, said data storage units being generally in an upright position but angled from the horizontal plane at said upward angle, to allow greater ease of access to aid data storage unit users in the entry and removal of said planar removable storage media;
- each of said data storage units further including a flange attached to each said data storage unit opposing side wall wherein said flanges extend outwardly from and normal to said data storage unit side walls; and
- said angled mount means being formed integrally with said opposing side walls of the chassis and including a substantially straight flange which extends inwardly towards said recess for receiving said data storage units, and directed at said upwardly facing angle, and a set of camming tabs inwardly extending towards said recess for receiving said outwardly extending data storage unit flanges and guiding said outwardly extending flanges to a final position at said upward angle.
- 8. A tower unit for a computer system which includes a chassis for mounting a plurality of data storage units, wherein the tower unit is located on a horizontal reference plane, comprising:
- at least one data storage unit for receiving and supporting generally planar and removable storage media, said data storage units including opposing side walls and having an upright position wherein said data storage units receive and support said planar removable storage media in a plane being generally parallel to the horizontal reference plane when said data storage units are in said upright position;
- said chassis comprising a generally rectangular box frame including front and rear walls connected with opposing side walls wherein said front, rear and side walls being generally normal to the horizontal reference plane;
- said front wall including a data storage bay which includes a bay face and a recess for receiving said data storage units, said bay being angled upwards at an angle with respect to the horizontal reference plane;
- angled mount means positioned within said frame and forming part of said opposing side walls of the chassis for mounting said data storage units at said upward angle, said data storage units being generally in an upright position but angled from the horizontal plane at said upward angle, to allow greater ease of access to aid data storage unit users in the entry and removal of said planar removable storage media;
- said angled mount means being a first angled mount means for mounting a first series of data storage units;
- a second mount means positioned within said frame and forming part of said opposing side walls of the chassis for mounting a second series of data storage units in a substantially horizontal position;
- said second series of data storage units including at least one hard disk drive unit;
- each of said hard disk drive units having a flange attached to each opposing side wall of said hard disk drive units wherein said flange extends outwardly from and normal to said side wall; and
- said second mount means being formed with said opposing side walls of the chassis and having a series of flange sets which extend inwardly towards said recess for receiving said data storage units, for mounting each of said hard disk drive units in a substantially horizontal position.
- 9. The tower unit set forth in claim 8, wherein each of said inwardly extending flange sets of said second mount means includes:
- a first substantially straight, inwardly extending flange for receiving and supporting said outwardly extending flange of said hard disk drive unit, said substantially straight flange being positioned in a substantially horizontal direction; and
- angled, inwardly extending camming tabs for receiving said hard disk drive unit flange and for guiding said hard disk drive unit flange into a final, substantially horizontal position.
- 10. The tower unit set forth in claim 9, wherein:
- said angled, camming tabs of said second mount means include first and second camming tabs adjacently positioned to each other and in alignment with said substantially straight inwardly extending flange in a generally horizontal direction.
- 11. The tower unit set forth in claim 10, wherein:
- said angled camming tabs of said second mount means include surfaces at an open angle with respect to said hard disk drive unit outwardly extending flange as said hard disk drive unit flange is inserted into said second mount means for receiving said hard disk drive unit outwardly extending flange and guiding said flange and said hard disk drive unit into a final, substantially horizontal resting position.
- 12. The tower unit set forth in claim 10, wherein:
- each of said angled camming tabs of said second mount means include opposing cam surfaces which are curved for providing surface area for guiding said hard disk drive unit outwardly extending flange into position and surface area for receiving and maintaining said hard disk drive unit outwardly extending flange in a final, substantially horizontal position.
- 13. The tower unit set forth in claim 11, wherein:
- each of said outwardly extending flanges of said hard disk drive unit include a first flange portion which extends outwardly from said hard disk drive unit and a second flange portion integrally formed with said first flange portion and substantially perpendicular thereto for mounting against said hard disk drive unit, said first flange portion having a first surface wider than the second surface; and
- one of said first and second angled camming tabs of said second mount means extending further inwardly than the other tab for receiving the first, wider surface of said first surface of said first flange portion of said hard disk drive unit.
- 14. A tower unit for a computer system which includes a chassis for mounting a plurality of data storage units, wherein the tower unit is located on a horizontal reference plane, comprising:
- at least one data storage unit for receiving and supporting generally planar and removable storage media, said data storage units including opposing side walls and having an upright position wherein said data storage units receive and support said planar removable storage media in a plane being generally parallel to the horizontal reference plane when said data storage units are in said upright position;
- said chassis comprising a generally rectangular box frame including front and rear walls connected with opposing side walls wherein said front, rear and side walls being generally normal to the horizontal reference plane;
- said front wall including a data storage bay which includes a bay face and a recess for receiving said data storage units, said bay being angled upwards at an angle with respect to the horizontal reference plane;
- angled mount means positioned within said frame and forming part of said opposing side walls of the chassis for mounting said data storage units at said upward angle, said data storage units being generally in an upright position but angled from the horizontal plane at said upward angle, to allow greater ease of access to aid data storage unit users in the entry and removal of said planar removable storage media;
- said angled mount means being a first angled mount means for mounting a first series of data storage units;
- a second mount means positioned within said frame and forming part of said opposing side walls of the chassis for mounting a second series of data storage units in a substantially horizontal position;
- said angled mount means being a first angled mount means for mounting a first series of data storage units;
- a second mount means positioned with said frame and forming part of said opposing side walls of the chassis for mounting a second series of data storage units in a substantially horizontal position;
- each of said data storage units having a flange attached to each opposing side wall of said data storage units wherein said flange extends outwardly from and normal to said side walls; and
- second mount means being formed integrally with said opposing side walls of the chassis in a position substantially below said first-mentioned angled mount means, said second mount means including a substantially straight flange which extends inwardly towards said recess for receiving said data storage units, and directed at a horizontal angle and camming tabs inwardly extending for receiving said data storage unit outwardly extending flange for guiding said data storage unit to a final, substantially horizontal position.

This is a continuation of co-pending application Ser. No. 431,288 filed on Nov. 3, 1989 now abandoned, which is a continuation-in-part of U.S. design patent application Ser. No. 291,746, filed Dec. 29, 1988, now Des. 313,015 entitled "Personal Computer." This patent application relates to U.S. patent application Ser.
