Claims
- 1. A method for generating a tracking error from an optical recording medium having first and second pits on an (n-1)th recording track in a recording region and a third pit on an n-th recording track succeeding said (n-1)th recording track, said an n-th recording track being formed at a distance from said (n-1)th recording track narrower than the diameter of a spot of a light beam radiated on said (n-1)th track, said third pit being used for detecting the tracking error in cooperation with one of said first and second pits, comprising
- sample-holding a detection signal, obtained on scanning said first, second and third pits with said light beam, at timings of scanning said first, second and third pits with said light beam, taking differences between sample-held detection signals for generating plural differential signals and detecting the signs of said differential signals for periodically switching said differential signals for generating the tracking error signal.
- 2. An apparatus for generating a tracking error from an optical recording medium having first and second pits on an (n-1)th recording track in a recording region and a third pit on an n-th recording track succeeding said (n-1)th recording track, said n-th recording track being formed at a distance from said (n-1)th recording track narrower than the diameter of a spot of a light beam radiated on said (n-1)th track, said third pit being used for detecting the tracking error in cooperation with one of said first and second pits, comprising
- timing signal generating means for generating timing signals based on clock signal components in output signals of an optical head,
- sample-and-hold means for sample-holding an output signal of said optical head detecting each of said first, second and third pits based on timing signals from said timing signal gene rating means, and
- tracking error generating means for generating plural differential signals by taking differences of output signals from said sample-and-hold means associated with said pits and periodically switching said differential signals based on the signs of said plural differential signals for outputting resulting a periodically switched signal as the tracking error signal.
- 3. An apparatus for generating a tracking error according to claim 2, wherein said apparatus further comprises processing means for taking differences of output signals of said sample-and-hold means associated with said pits, discriminating means for discriminating the sign of an output signal from said processing means, and switching means for periodically switching output signals of said processing means based on an output signal of said discriminating means.
