- 5. The coupling apparatus of claim 4 in which said turning resistance means includes a by-pass valve controlling the flow of fluid in said cylinder from one side of the piston to the other side thereof.
- 6. The coupling apparatus of claim 4 in which said piston comprises a pivot means which passes through an aperture in said turntable means, and a resilient bushing in said aperture to permit rocking movement of said pivot means relative to the plane surface of said turntable means. .Iadd.7. Coupling apparatus for joining a first towing vehicle to a second trailer vehicle comprising:

- first means on one of said first and second vehicles,
- second means on the other of said first and second vehicles moving relative to said first means as said first and second vehicles turn relative to each other about a yaw axis,
- turning resistance means for providing a variably controllable resistance to turning of said first vehicle relative to said second vehicle about their said yaw axis,
- and vehicle speed responsive means for varying the resistance to turning provided by said turning resistance means in accordance with the speed of the joined vehicles to provide low resistance to said turning at low vehicle speeds so as to permit sharp turning maneuvers at said low speeds and a substantially higher degree of yaw stiffness during normal vehicle cruising conditions..Iaddend. .Iadd.9. The vehicle coupling means of claim 8 in which said turning resistance means includes a fluid pressure cylinder and supporting a piston, means responsive to turning of said first vehicle relative to said second vehicle for causing relative movement of said piston and said cylinder, said turning resistance means varying the resistance of movement between said cylinder and said piston. .Iaddend. .Iadd.10. The vehicle coupling means of claim 9 which further includes first and second fluid control means permitting flow between opposite sides of a piston in said cylinder at respectively different rates of flow, said vehicle speed responsive means selectively controlling at least one of said first and second fluid control means. .Iaddend. .Iadd.11. The vehicle coupling means of claim 8 in which said turning resistance means includes a cylinder and a piston slidable in said cylinder, and means responsive to turning movement of said first and second means relative to each other to move said piston relative to said cylinder to provide at least a portion of said turning resistance, said speed responsive means selectively controlling the resistance to movement of said piston relative to said cylinder. .Iaddend. .Iadd.12. The vehicle coupling means of claim 11 in which said cylinder contains a fluid and said turning resistance means includes conduit means for permitting said fluid to flow only at a restricted rate between opposite sides of said piston. .Iaddend. .Iadd.13. The vehicle coupling means of claim 12 in which said conduit means includes an orifice for controlling the flow of said fluid between opposite sides of said piston. .Iaddend. .Iadd.14.
