Claims
- 1. A trailer comprising:
a) an inner frame, said inner frame comprised of metal, b) an outer shell at least partially surrounding said inner frame, said outer shell comprised of non-metal, and c) at least one wheel rotatably mounted to said inner frame.
- 2. The trailer of claim 1 wherein said outer shell is comprised of a plastic.
- 3. The trailer of claim 1 wherein said inner frame includes a lower frame portion on which said at least one wheel is rotatably mounted, and an upper frame portion, said upper frame portion supporting at least a portion of the weight of said outer shell.
- 4. The trailer of claim 3 wherein said upper frame portion includes a middle support member that extends upwardly from said lower frame portion, wherein a hinge is secured to said middle support member, and wherein said upper frame portion further includes a first bar assembly hingedly connected to said middle support member by said hinge.
- 5. The trailer of claim 4 wherein said upper frame portion further includes a second bar assembly hingedly connected to said middle support member by said hinge.
- 6. The trailer of claim 4 wherein said upper frame portion further includes front and rear support members, and wherein said front, middle and rear support members are connected by elongated members.
- 7. The trailer of claim 1 wherein said outer shell includes an upper body portion and a lower body portion.
- 8. The trailer of claim 7 wherein said inner frame includes a lower frame portion on which the at least one wheel is rotatably mounted, and an upper frame portion, said upper frame portion supporting at least a portion of the weight of said upper body portion.
- 9. The trailer of claim 8 wherein said upper frame portion includes a middle support member that extends upwardly from said lower frame portion, and wherein at least a portion of the weight of said upper body portion is supported by said middle support member.
- 10. The trailer of claim 9 wherein said upper frame portion further includes front and rear support members extending upwardly from said lower frame portion, and wherein at least a portion of the weight of said upper body portion is supported by said front and rear support members.
- 11. The trailer of claim 7 wherein said lower body portion includes a front section and a rear section.
- 12. The trailer of claim 1 wherein said outer shell includes a first cover.
- 13. The trailer of claim 12 wherein said first cover includes an outer skin and an inner skin, and wherein a first bar assembly is disposed between said inner skin and said outer skin.
- 14. The trailer of claim 13 wherein said first bar assembly is comprised of a metal and said inner and outer skins are comprised of a non-metal.
- 15. The trailer of claim 13 wherein said first cover is pivotally connected to said inner frame by a hinge, and wherein said hinge is connected to said first bar assembly through said outer skin.
- 16. The trailer of claim 12 wherein said outer shell further includes a second cover.
- 17. The trailer of claim 16 wherein said first and second covers each include an outer skin and an inner skin, and wherein first and second bar assemblies are disposed between said inner and outer skins of said first and second covers respectively.
- 18. The trailer of claim 17 wherein said first cover is pivotally connected to said inner frame by at least one hinge, wherein said hinge is connected to said second bar assembly through said outer skin of said first cover, wherein said second cover is pivotally connected to said outer shell by said at least one hinge, and wherein said hinge is connected to said first bar assembly through said outer skin of said second cover.
- 19. The trailer of claim 17 wherein said inner skin of said first cover includes a raised portion, and wherein at least a portion of said raised portion is formed to receive said bar assembly.
- 20. The trailer of claim 19 wherein said outer skin is bonded to said raised portion of said inner skin.
- 21. The trailer of claim 1 further comprising an inner liner, said inner liner having a bottom and a wall extending upwardly from said bottom at an angle θ.
- 22. The trailer of claim 20 wherein said wall terminates in a lip, and wherein said lip is affixed to said outer shell.
- 23. The trailer of claim 3 wherein said upper frame portion is removably secured to said lower frame portion.
- 24. The trailer of claim 6 wherein said front, middle and rear support members each have attachment plates secured thereto, and wherein said attachment plates are removably secured to said lower frame portion.
- 25. The trailer of claim 6 wherein said front, middle and rear support members each have attachment plates secured thereto, wherein said lower frame portion has frame horns secured thereto, and wherein said attachment plates are removably secured to said frame horns.
- 26. The trailer of claim 18 wherein said inner frame includes a middle support member having at least one mounting bracket thereon, and wherein a middle portion of said at least one hinge is secured to said at least one mounting bracket.
- 27. The trailer of claim 26 wherein said middle portion of said at least one hinge is secured to said at least one mounting bracket by a threaded fastener extending through openings defined in said mounting bracket, said outer shell and said middle portion, wherein said opening in said outer shell has a diameter larger than the opening in said mounting bracket, and wherein a spacer is disposed in said opening in said outer shell.
- 28. The trailer of claim 6 wherein said elongated members are secured to said front and rear support members by a bifurcated connection, wherein a bifurcated connection comprises a bifurcated attachment member including a threaded stud and a pair of opposed members having openings therein, and a threaded fastener extending through openings in an end of the elongated member and the openings in said opposed members of said bifurcated attachment member.
- 29. The trailer of claim 21 wherein said angle θ is between about 45° and about 89°.
- 30. A trailer comprising:
a) a main body portion, b) at least one wheel rotatably mounted to said main body portion, and c) a first cover hingedly connected to said main body portion, wherein said first cover comprises,
i) an inner skin, ii) an outer skin, and iii) a bar assembly disposed between said inner and outer skins.
- 31. The trailer of claim 30 wherein said inner and outer skins comprises a non-metal and wherein said bar assembly comprises a metal.
- 32. The trailer of claim 31 wherein said inner and outer skins are comprised of a plastic.
- 33. The trailer of claim 30 wherein said inner skin includes a raised portion defined therein, and wherein said raised portion is secured to said outer skin.
- 34. The trailer of claim 30 wherein said first cover is hingedly secured to said main body portion by at least one hinge, wherein said bar assembly includes at least one mounting bracket, wherein said at least one hinge is secured to said mounting bracket of said bar assembly.
- 35. The trailer of claim 34 wherein said hinge includes a middle portion and a hinge portion pivotally connected to said middle portion, wherein said mounting bracket of said bar assembly is secured to said hinge portion of said hinge with a portion of said outer skin sandwiched therebetween.
- 36. The trailer of claim 30 further comprising a second cover including
a) an inner skin, b) an outer skin, and c) a bar assembly disposed between said inner and outer skins.
- 37. The trailer of claim 36 wherein said first and second covers are hingedly secured to said main body portion by at least one hinge, wherein said bar assemblies of said first and second covers each include at least one mounting bracket, and wherein said at least one hinge is secured to said mounting brackets of said bar assemblies.
- 38. The trailer of claim 37 wherein said at least one hinge includes a middle portion and first and second hinge portions pivotally connected to said middle portion, wherein said at least one mounting bracket of said bar assembly of said first cover is secured to said first hinge portion and said at least one mounting bracket of said bar assembly of said second cover is secured to said second hinge portion.
- 39. A trailer comprising:
a) an inner frame, said inner frame including a lower frame portion and an upper frame portion extending upwardly from said lower frame portion, b) an outer shell at least partially surrounding said inner frame, said outer shell including an upper body portion and lower body portion that are bonded together, wherein said upper body portion rests on said inner frame, and c) at least one wheel rotatably mounted on said lower frame portion.
- 40. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said lower frame portion includes an axle secured thereto, said axle having a pair of wheels rotatably secured at opposite ends thereof.
- 41. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said upper body portion has a first opening and a second opening defined therein and wherein said upper body portion has a first cover and a second cover associated with said first and second openings respectively.
- 42. The trailer of claim 41 wherein said upper body portion includes an arch portion extending between and partially defining said first and second openings, and wherein said arch portion contacts said upper frame portion.
- 43. The trailer of claim 42 further comprising a hinge secured to said upper frame portion through said arch portion, wherein said hinge pivotally connects said first and second covers to said outer shell.
- 44. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said upper body portion has a first opening defined therein, wherein said upper body portion has a first cover associated with said first opening, wherein said first cover includes an inner skin and an outer skin and a bar assembly disposed therebetween.
- 45. The trailer of claim 44 wherein said bar assembly is comprised of a metal and said inner and outer skins are comprised of a non-metal.
- 46. The trailer of claim 45 wherein said inner and outer skins are comprised of plastic.
- 47. The trailer of claim 41 wherein said first and second covers each include an inner skin and an outer skin and a bar assembly disposed therebetween.
- 48. The trailer of claim 47 wherein said inner skin of said first and second covers each include a latch depression defined therein, and wherein a latching system is secured in said latch depression.
- 49. The trailer of claim 48 wherein said latching system is secured in said latching depression using an adhesive.
- 50. The trailer of claim 41 wherein said upper frame portion includes front, middle and rear support members extending upwardly from said lower frame portion.
- 51. The trailer of claim 50 wherein said first and second covers each comprise a latching system that includes at least one connector.
- 52. The trailer of claim 51 wherein said front and rear support members each have at least one keeper secured thereto, wherein said connectors are adapted to engage said keepers when said first and second covers are closed.
- 53. The trailer of claim 40 wherein said axle is a torsion axle.
- 54. The trailer of claim 53 wherein said torsion axle includes a tubular member having a square shaft and a plurality of elastomeric pieces extending therethrough.
- 55. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said upper frame portion includes front, middle and rear support members, and wherein said upper body portion rests on said front, middle and rear support members.
- 56. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said lower body portion comprises a front section and a rear section.
- 57. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said upper frame portion is removably secured to said lower frame portion.
- 58. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said inner frame is made of a metal.
- 59. The trailer of claim 58 wherein said outer shell is made of a non-metal.
- 60. The trailer of claim 39 wherein said lower body portion includes a lip defined around a top edge thereof, and wherein said upper body portion includes a lower edge that is adapted to cooperate with said lip, thereby forming said outer shell.
- 61. The trailer of claim 60 wherein said upper and lower body portions are secured to one another using an adhesive tape.
- 62. The trailer of claim 60 further comprising an inner liner supported by said lower frame portion, wherein said inner liner includes a bottom and an outer wall extending upwardly from said bottom at an angle θ, wherein a lip extends upwardly from said outer wall, and wherein said lip is adhered to said lip of said lower body portion.
- 63. The trailer of claim 62 wherein said bottom of said inner liner comprises a plurality of raised ribs defined therein.
- 64. The trailer of claim 62 wherein said bottom of said inner liner includes at least one drain.
- 65. The trailer of claim 64 wherein said drain extends downwardly through an opening in said bottom, wherein said drain comprises an upper portion having a flange extending radially outwardly therefrom and an extension, and wherein said extension is received in said opening in said bottom, said upper portion is received in said extension and said flange contacts said bottom.
- 66. The trailer of claim 62 wherein θ is between about 4° and about 89°.
- 67. The The trailer of claim 62 wherein θ is between about 65° and about 85°.
- 68. The trailer of claim 48 wherein said bar assemblies of said first and second covers each include at least, one tab extending therefrom, and wherein said latching systems of said first and second covers are mechanically connected to said tabs, respectively.
- 69. A trailer comprising:
a) a trailer body, b) a first cover hingedly connected to said trailer body, and c) a first prop rod secured to said first cover,
wherein said prop rod is adapted to be pivoted downwardly and engage said trailer body to thereby prop open said first cover.
- 70. The trailer of claim 69 further comprising a second cover hingedly connected to said trailer body, and a second prop rod secured to said second cover.
- 71. The trailer of claim 69 wherein said trailer body includes a keeper comprising a main body portion, said main body portion having an opening defined therein, wherein said first prop rod is adapted to engage said keeper.
- 72. The trailer of claim 71 wherein said first prop rod includes first and second ends, wherein said first end includes a hook, and wherein said hook is adapted to engage said opening in said keeper.
- 73. The trailer of claim 72 wherein said second end of said first prop rod includes a loop engaged with an eye bolt secure to an underside of said first cover.
- 74. The trailer of claim 73 wherein said first cover comprises an inner skin, an outer skin, and a bar assembly disposed between said inner and outer skins.
- 75. The trailer of claim 74 wherein said bar assembly includes a mounting bracket extending downwardly therefrom and through said inner skin, and wherein said eye bolt is secured to said mounting bracket.
- 76. A trailer comprising:
a) a lower frame portion, said lower frame portion including at least one axle having wheels at its opposite ends, b) a lower body portion supported on said lower frame portion, c) an upper frame portion extending upwardly from said lower frame portion, and d) an upper body portion supported on said upper frame portion and affixed to said lower body portion.
- 77. The trailer of claim 76 wherein said lower body portion has a lip extending inwardly from a bottom edge thereof, and wherein a floor panel is disposed between said lower frame portion and said lower body portion, said floor panel having a lip extending around at least a portion of the perimeter thereof that is affixed to said lip of said lower body portion.
- 78. The trailer of claim 77 wherein a deck is disposed between said lower frame portion and said floor panel.
- 79. The trailer of claim 78 wherein said deck is comprised of wood.
- 80. The trailer of claim 77 wherein said floor panel has at least two wheel cavities defined therein, wherein said floor panel has at least two wheel housings secured thereto, and wherein said wheel cavities and said wheel housings cooperate to partially surround the wheels.
- 81. The trailer of claim 76 wherein said lower frame portion includes a plurality of frame horns affixed thereto, and wherein said upper frame portion extends upwardly from said frame horns.
- 82. The trailer of claim 81 wherein said upper frame portion includes a middle support member extending upwardly from at least two of said frame horns.
- 83. The trailer of claim 81 wherein said upper frame portion includes front, middle and rear support members each extending upwardly from at least two of said frame horns.
- 84. The trailer of claim 83 wherein said front and rear support members each include two spaced apart upright frame members and a support portion extending therebetween, said upright frame members being affixed to said frame horns.
- 85. The trailer of claim 83 wherein said front, middle and rear support members are removably affixed to said frame horns.
- 86. A trailer comprising:
a) a lower frame portion, b) a tub-shaped inner liner supported on said lower frame portion, wherein said inner liner has a lip running around a top edge thereof, c) a lower body portion at least partially surrounding said inner liner and supported on said lower frame portion, and d) an upper body portion secured to said lower body portion, wherein said lip of said inner liner is secured to an inside surface of said lower body portion to form a bumper portion.
- 87. The trailer of claim 86 wherein said tub-shaped inner liner comprises a bottom and an outer wall extending upwardly from said bottom at an angle, wherein said lip extends from a top edge of said outer wall.
- 88. The trailer of claim 87 further comprising a floor panel disposed between said lower frame portion and said inner liner, wherein said floor panel has a lip defined around an outer edge thereof, wherein said lower body portion includes a lip extending inwardly around a bottom edge thereof, and wherein said lip of said lower body portion is secured on said lip of said floor panel.
- 89. The trailer of claim 88 wherein a deck is disposed between said floor panel and said inner liner.
- 90. The trailer of claim 89 wherein said inner liner, said deck, said floor panel and said lower frame portion each have a plurality of aligned perimeter holes defined therein, and wherein a plurality of threaded fasteners extend through each of said aligned perimeter holes to secure said inner liner, said deck, said floor panel and said lower frame portion togther.
- 91. The trailer of claim 90 wherein at least one of said plurality of threaded fasteners includes a loop thereon that extends above said bottom of said inner liner.
- 92. A trailer comprising:
a) an inner frame comprised of metal, said inner frame including a lower frame portion having an axle, a tongue extending forwardly therefrom and an upper frame portion, said upper frame portion including
i) a front support member that extends upwardly from said lower frame portion, ii) a middle support member that extends upwardly from said lower frame portion, said middle support member having two mounting surfaces secured thereto, iii) a rear support member that extends upwardly from said lower frame portion, and iv) a plurality of elongated members extending between and connecting said front support member and said middle support member and said rear support member and said middle support member, b) an outer shell at least partially surrounding said inner frame, said outer shell comprised of plastic and defining a trailer interior, wherein said outer shell includes
i) an upper body portion, wherein said upper body portion has first and second openings defined therein that are each surrounded by a water diversion trough, and wherein said upper body portion further includes an arch portion extending between and partially defining said first and second openings, and wherein said arch portion contacts said mounting surfaces of said upper frame portion, and ii) a lower body portion including front and rear sections, wherein said lower body portion has an indented lip extending around a top thereof, wherein said upper body portion is bonded to said indented lip, and wherein said lower body portion has a lip extending inwardly from a bottom edge thereof, c) a pair of hinges including a middle portion and front and rear hinge portions, wherein said middle portion is connected to said mounting surfaces of said middle support member, d) a second cover including
i) an inner skin having a seal adhered thereto, wherein said seal cooperates with said water diversion trough to prevent water from entering said trailer interior, ii) an outer skin, iii) a latching system, and iv) a bar assembly disposed between said inner and outer skins, wherein said bar assembly includes two mounting brackets that are each secured to one of said front hinge portions of said hinges and at least one tab that is mechanically connected to said latching system, e) a first cover including
i) an inner skin having a seal adhered thereto, wherein said seal cooperates with said water diversion trough to prevent water from entering said trailer interior, ii) an outer skin, iii) a latching system, and iv) a bar assembly disposed between said inner and outer skins, wherein said bar assembly includes two mounting brackets that are each secured to one of said rear hinge portions of said hinges and at least one tab that is mechanically connected to said latching system, f) a floor panel disposed between said lower frame portion and said lower body portion, said floor panel having a lip extending around at least a portion of the perimeter thereof that is affixed to said lip of said lower body portion, g) a deck disposed between said lower frame portion and said floor panel, h) an inner liner having a bottom, an outer wall extending upwardly at an angle from said bottom and a lip extending upwardly from said outer wall, said inner liner disposed on said floor panel, wherein said lip of said inner liner is affixed to said indented lip of said lower body portion, and
i) a pair of wheels rotatably mounted to opposite ends of said axle.
- 93. An inner frame for a trailer, said inner frame comprising:
a) a lower frame portion, b) front, middle and rear support members extending upwardly from said lower frame, c) a first bar assembly hingedly connected to said middle support member, and d) a second bar assembly hingedly connected to said middle support member.
- 94. The inner frame of claim 93 further comprises at least one hinge for hingedly connecting said first bar assembly and said second bar assembly to said middle support member.
- 95. The inner frame of claim 93 further comprising at least one elongated member extending between said front support member and said middle support member, and at least one elongated member extending between said rear support member and said middle support member.
- 96. The inner frame of claim 93 wherein said lower frame portion includes a plurality of frame horns extending therefrom, and wherein said front, middle and rear support members are connected to various ones of said plurality of frame horns.
- 97. The inner frame of claim 93 further comprising two elongated members extending between said front support member and said middle support member, and two elongated members extending between said rear support member and said middle support member.
- 98. The inner frame of claim 94 further comprising a latching system wherein said latching system is mechanically connected to one of said first and second bar assemblies at an end opposite to where said bar assembly connects to said hinge.
- 99. The inner frame of claim 94 wherein said first and second bar assemblies each include at least two mounting brackets affixed thereto, and wherein said mounting brackets are affixed to said hinge.
- 100. The inner frame of claim 97 wherein said elongated members are secured to said front and rear support members by a bifurcated connection, wherein a bifurcated connection comprises a bifurcated attachment member including a threaded stud and a pair of opposed members having openings therein, and a threaded fastener extending through openings in an end of the elongated member and the openings in said opposed members of said bifurcated attachment member.
- 101. The inner frame of claim 98 wherein said first and second bar assemblies each include at least one tab extending therefrom, and wherein said tab is mechanically connected to said latching system.
- 102. A hinge comprising:
a) a middle portion having first and second opposite ends, said middle portion having at least one end member extending outwardly from said first end, and at least one end member extending outwardly from said second end, wherein each end member has an opening defined therethrough, b) a front hinge portion, said front hinge portion having at least one end member extending outwardly from an end thereof, wherein said at least one end member has an opening defined therethrough, and c) a rear hinge portion, said rear hinge portion having at least one end member extending outwardly from an end thereof, wherein said at least one end member has an opening defined therethrough, wherein said opening in said end member of said first end of said middle portion cooperates with said opening in said end member of said front hinge portion to receive a first hinge pin, and wherein said opening in said end member of said second end of said middle portion cooperates with said opening in said end member of said rear hinge portion to receive a second hinge pin.
- 103. The hinge of claim 102 wherein said middle portion has a bottom surface, and wherein said bottom surface has openings defined therein for receiving a threaded fastener, whereby said middle portion can be affixed to an object.
- 104. The hinge of claim 102 wherein said middle portion has an opening defined laterally therethrough.
- 105. The hinge of claim 102 wherein said middle portion, said front hinge portion and said rear hinge portion each have openings defined laterally therethrough.
- 106. The hinge of claim 102 wherein said front and rear hinge portions are formed in the shape of a wedge.
- 107. The hinge of claim 104 in combination with a rack, wherein a portion of said rack extends through said opening in said middle portion, thereby securing said rack to said hinge.
- 108. A hinge comprising:
a) a middle portion, said middle portion having at least one end member extending outwardly from an end thereof, wherein said at least one end member has an opening defined therethrough, wherein said middle portion has an opening defined laterally therethrough, b) a hinge portion, said hinge portion having at least one end member extending outwardly from an end thereof, wherein said at least one end member has an opening defined therethrough, wherein said opening in said at least one end member of said middle portion cooperates with said opening in said at least one end member of said hinge portion to receive a hinge pin.
- 109. The hinge of claim 108, wherein said middle portion and said cover portion are made using an extrusion process.
- 110. A method of propping open a cover, said method comprising the steps of:
a) unlatching a hook associated with said cover from a keeper, b) raising said cover, c) unlatching a prop rod from said cover, d) pivoting said prop rod downwardly; and e) engaging said prop rod with said keeper.
- 111. The method of claim 110 wherein step (c) includes the sub-step of unlatching said prop rod from at least one rod securing hook.
- 112. The method of step 110 wherein said prop rod includes a ball joint for pivoting said prop rod downwardly.
- 113. The method of step 110 wherein said prop rod includes a loop at an end of said rod opposite said hook, and wherein said loop engages an eye bolt affixed to an underside of said cover.
- 114. A prop rod for propping open a cover, said prop rod comprising:
a) an elongated rod having first and second opposite ends, b) a hook at said first end, and c) a ball joint at said second end.
- 115. The prop rod of claim 114 wherein said hook includes an inner surface, and wherein said inner surface has at least one notch defined therein.
- 116. An inner liner for use in a trailer comprising:
a) a bottom having a plurality of ribs defined therein, said bottom having an outer edge and a plurality of openings defined therein, b) a wall extending upwardly from said outer edge of said bottom, wherein said wall has at least two opposing wheel cavities defined therein, and wherein said wall has a top edge, and c) a lip extending from said top edge of said wall.
- 117. The inner liner of claim 116 wherein said wall extends upwardly from said outer edge of said bottom at an angle θ.
- 118. The inner liner of claim 117 wherein θ is between about 45° and about 89°.
- 119. The inner liner of claim 117 wherein θ is between about 65° and about 85°.
- 120. A drain comprising:
a) a cylindrical extension portion having a top and a bottom, wherein the extension portion has an opening defined therethrough, and b) a cylindrical shaped upper portion having a top and a bottom, said upper portion having a flange extending radially outwardly from said top thereof, wherein said upper portion is received in said opening of said extension portion, wherein said flange is located above said top of said extension portion, and wherein said bottom of said extension portion is located below said bottom of said upper portion.
- 121. The drain of claim 120 wherein the extension portion is tapered such that the opening is wide at the top and is narrow at the bottom thereof.
- 122. A trailer comprising:
a) an inner frame, said inner frame comprised of a first material, b) an outer shell at least partially surrounding said inner frame, said outer shell comprised of a second material, wherein said first material has a lower thermal coefficient of expansion than said second material, and c) at least one wheel rotatably mounted to said inner frame.
