Claims
- 1. A transdermal delivery device for delivering an effective amount of a chemical agent to the skin of a subject, said device comprising an impermeable backing layer, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer for adhering the device to the skin of the subject and means for containing the chemical agent in said device for transdermal delivery to the subject characterized in that:
said pressure-sensitive layer has intimately incorporated therein an effective amount of a diorganopolysiloxane polymer to provide said pressure-sensitive adhesive layer with a degree of adhesivity sufficient to allow said device to remain on the skin of the subject for a sufficient period of time to deliver said chemical agent and then be readily removed with minimal skin irritation or damage.
- 2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the polydiorganosiloxane content is between about 0.1 to 20% by weight of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer.
- 3. A device according to claim 2 wherein the polydiorganosiloxane has the formula:
- 4. A device according to claim 3 wherein R is a member selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, and cycloalkyl which may be substituted by or contain halogen, amino, hydroxy and ether functionalities.
- 5. A device according to claim 4 wherein R is methyl and said polydiorganosiloxane is fully methylated linear polydimethyl siloxane polymer having the formula:
- 6. A device according to claim 5 wherein n is sufficient to cause said polydimethylsiloxane to have a viscosity of between about 20 and 12,500 centistokes.
- 7. A device according to claim 5 wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive is a member selected from the group consisting of an acrylic copolymer, a water-borne acrylic copolymer, a rubber and a latex.
- 8. A device according to claim 7 wherein the chemical agent is a member selected from the group consisting of a drug, a cosmetic and an emollient.
- 9. A device according to claim 7 wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive is an acrylic copolymer.
- 10. A device according to claim 7 wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive is a water-borne acrylic copolymer.
- 11. A device according to claim 7 wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive is a rubber.
- 12. A device according to claim 7 wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive is a latex copolymer.
