Claims
- 1. A power transfer apparatus for a four-wheel drive vehicle comprising:
- a housing;
- input means supported for rotation in said housing;
- first and second output means supported for rotation in said housing; and
- planetary gear means support for axial movement relative to said input means and said first and second output means for establishing different drive connections therebetween, said planetary gear means being axially moveable between a first position for establishing a full-time four-wheel drive mode wherein differentiation is permitted between said first and second output means, and a second position for establishing a part-time four-wheel drive mode wherein differentiation is inhibited between said first and second output means.
- 2. The power transfer apparatus of claim 1 wherein said planetary ger means is operable for dividing drive torque supplied to said input means between said first and second output means.
- 3. The power transfer apparatus of claim 1 wherein said planetary gear means is moveable to a third position for establishing a two-wheel drive mode, whereby said input means is drivingly interconnected to only one of said first and second output means.
- 4. The power transfer apparatus of claim 1 wherein said planetary gear means is moveable to a third position for establishing a Neutral mode, whereby said input means is uncoupled from said first and second output means.
- 5. The power transfer apparatus of claim 1 wherein said planetary gear means is a planetary gear assembly having a first sun gear, a plurality of first planet gears meshed with said first sun gear and which are journalled on a carrier, a second sun gear, and a plurality of second planet gears meshed with said second sun gear and which are journalled on said carrier such that each of said second planet gears is meshed with an associated one of said first planet gears, said planetary gear assembly being moveable between said first position for establishing a full-time four-wheel high-range drive mode wherein said input means is coupled to said carrier and said first and second sun gears are respectively coupled to said first and second output means for permitting differentiation therebetween, and said second position for establishing a part-time four-wheel high-range drive mode wherein said carrier couples said input means to said first and second output means.
- 6. The power transfer apparatus of claim 5 wherein said planetary gear assembly is moveable to a third position for establishing a two-wheel high-range mode wherein said carrier couples said input means to said first output means and said second output means is uncoupled from both of said carrier and second sun gear.
- 7. The power transfer apparatus of claim 6 wherein said planetary gear assembly is moveable to a fourth position for establishing a part-time four-wheel low-range mode wherein said input means is coupled to said first sun gear, said second sun gear is coupled to said housing, and said carrier is coupled to each of said first and second output means.
- 8. The power transfer apparatus of claim 5 wherein said planetary gear assembly is further moveable to a third position for establishing a part-time four-wheel low-range drive mode wherein said input means is coupled to said first sun gear, said second sun gear is coupled to said housing, and said carrier is coupled to each of said first and second output means.
- 9. The power transfer apparatus of claim 8 wherein said planetary gear assembly is moveable to a fourth position for establishing a Neutral mode, whereby said carrier and said first and second sun gears are decoupled from said first and second output means.
- 10. The power transfer apparatus of claim 8 wherein said planetary gear assembly is moveable to a fourth position for establishing a two-wheel high-range mode wherein said carrier couples said input means to said first output means and said second output means is uncoupled from both of said carrier and second sun gear.
- 11. The power transfer apparatus of claim 8 further comprising a quill sleeve concentrically surrounding said first output means and which is non-rotatably fixed to said housing, said second sun gear adapted to engage said quill sleeve when said planetary gear assembly is in said third position for inhibiting rotation of said second sun gear, thus causing said carrier to rotate at a reduced speed ratio relative to said input means for establishing said four-wheel low-range drive mode.
- 12. The power transfer apparatus of claim 5 wherein said input means is an input shaft driven by an output shaft of a drivetrain for the vehicle, said first output means is a first output shaft which is coupled to a first set of ground-engaging wheels of the vehicle, sand said second output means includes a second output shaft and drive means adapted to be selectively coupled between said planetary gear assembly and said second output shaft for delivering drive torque from said input shaft to said second output shaft, said second output shaft being interconnected to a second set of ground-engaging wheels of the vehicle.
- 13. The power transfer apparatus of claim 12 further comprising shift means for selectively coupling and uncoupling said drive means with respect to said second output shaft when said planetary gear assembly is in said second position, said shift means being moveable between an engaged position for coupling said drive means to said second output shaft for establishing said part-time four-wheel high-range drive mode, and a disengaged postiion for uncoupling said drive means from said second output shaft for establishing a two-wheel high-range drive mode.
- 14. The power transfer apparatus of claim 12 wherein said shift means includes a synchronizer clutch for causing speed synchronization between said drive means and said second output shaft in response to movement of said shift means from said disengaged position toward said engaged position.
- 15. The power transfer apparatus of claim 5 wherein said first sun gear has a different number of teeth than the number of teeth on said second sun gear such that when said planetary gear assembly is in said first position drive torque supplied to said input means is divided between said first and second output means in a ratio proportional to the number of teeth on said respective first and second sun gears.
- 16. A power transfer apparatus for a four-wheel drive vehicle comprising:
- a housing;
- input means supported for rotation in said housing;
- first and second output means supported for rotation in said housing; and
- planetary gear means supported for movement relative to said input means and said first and second output means for establishing different drive connections therebetween, said planetary gear means being moveable between a first position for establishing a full-time four-wheel drive mode wherein differentiation is permitted between said first and second output means, a second position for establishing a part-time four-wheel drive mode wherein differentiation is inhibited between said first and second output means, and a third position for establishing a two-wheel drive mode wherein said input means is drivingly interconnected to only one of said first and second output means.
- 17. The power transfer apparatus of claim 16 wherein said planetary gear means is a planetary gear assembly that is axially moveable relative to said input means and said first and second output means and having a first sun gear, a plurality of first planet gears meshed with said first sun gear and which are journalled on a carrier, a second sun gear, and a plurality of second planet gears meshed with said second sun gear and which are journalled on said carrier such that each of said second planet gears is meshed with an associated one of said first planet gears, said planetary gar assembly being moveable between said first position for establishing a full-time four-wheel high-range drive mode wherein said input means is coupled to said carrier and said first and second sun gears are respectively coupled to said first and second output means for permitting differentiation therebetween, said second position for establishing a part-time four-wheel high-range drive mode wherein said carrier couples said input means to said first and second output means, an said third position for establishing a two-wheel high-range drive mode wherein said carrier couples said input means to said first output means and said second output means is uncoupled from both of said carrier and said second sun gear.
- 18. The power transfer apparatus of claim 17 wherein said planetary gear assembly is further moveable to a fourth position for establishing a part-time four-wheel low-range drive mode wherein said input means is coupled to said first sun gear, said second sun gear is coupled to said housing, and said carrier is coupled to both of said first and second output means.
- 19. A power transfer apparatus for a motor vehicle comprising:
- a housing;
- an input member supported for rotation in said housing;
- first and second output means supported for rotation in said housing;
- planetary gear means supported for sliding movement relative to said input member and said first and second output means for establishing different drive connections therebetween, said planetary gear means being moveable between a first position wherein said input member drives both of said first and second output means at a first speed ratio while inhibiting differentiation therebetween for establishing a part-time four-wheel high-range drive mode, a second position wherein said input member drives both of said first and second output means at said first speed ratio while permitting differentiation therebetween for establishing a full-time four-wheel high-range drive mode, and a third position wherein said input member drives said first and second output means at a second speed ratio while inhibiting differentiation therebetween for establishing a part-time four-wheel low-range drive mode; and
- shift means for permitting said planetary gear means to be selectively uncoupled from said second output means when in said first position for establishing a two-wheel high-range drive mode.
- 20. The power transfer apparatus of claim 19 wherein said planetary gear means is moveable to a fourth position for establishing a Neutral mode, wherein said input member is uncoupled from said first and second output means.
- 21. The power transfer apparatus of claim 19 wherein said planetary gear means is a planetary gear assembly having a first sun gear, a plurality of first planet gears meshed with said first sun gear and which are journalled on a carrier, a second sun gear, and a plurality of second planet gears meshed with said second sun gear and which are journalled on said carrier such that each of said second planet gears is meshed with an associated one of said first planet gears, said planetary gear assembly being moveable between said first position for establishing said part-time four-wheel high-range mode wherein said carrier couples said input member to said first and second output means, said second position for establishing said full-time four-wheel high-range mode wherein said input member is coupled to said carrier and said first and second sun gears are respectively coupled to said first and second output means for permitting differentiation therebetween, and said third position for establishing said part-time four-wheel low-range drive mode wherein said input member is coupled to said first sun gear, said second sun gear is coupled to said housing, and said carrier is coupled to each of said first and second output means.
- 22. The power transfer apparatus of claim 21 wherein said planetary gear assembly is moveable to a fourth position for establishing a Neutral mode, wherein said carrier and said first and second sun gears are decoupled from said first and second output means.
- 23. The power transfer apparatus of claim 21 further comprising a quill sleeve concentrically surrounding said first output means and which is non-rotatably fixed to said housing, said second sun gear adapted to engage said quill sleeve when said planetary gear assembly is in said third position for inhibiting rotation of said second sun gear, thus causing said carrier to rotate at a reduced speed ratio relative to said input member for establishing said four-wheel low-range drive mode.
- 24. The power transfer apparatus of claim 21 wherein said input member is an input shaft driven by an output shaft of a drivetrain for the vehicle, said first output means is a first output shaft which is coupled to a first set of ground-engaging wheels of the vehicle, sand said second output means includes a second output shaft and drive means adapted to be selectively coupled between said planetary gear assembly and said second output shaft for delivering drive torque from said input shaft to said second output shaft, said second output shaft being interconnected to a second set of ground-engaging wheels of the vehicle, and wherein said shift means is operable for selectively coupling and uncoupling said drive means with respect to said second output shaft when said planetary gear assembly is in said first position, said shift means being moveable between an engaged position for coupling said drive means to said second output shaft for establishing said part-time four-wheel high-range drive mode, and a disengaged position for uncoupling said drive means from said second output shaft for establishing said tow-wheel high-range mode.
- 25. The power transfer apparatus of claim 24 wherein said shift means includes a synchronizer clutch for causing speed synchronization between said drive means and said second output shaft in response to movement of said shift means from said disengaged position toward said engaged position.
