Claims
- 1. An entry controlled ribbon core engager for a recorder having an interior space accessible through a cover means that is selectively movable between an open position, in which a ribbon core having a supply ribbon at least partially wound therearound can selectively be provided in said interior space and removed therefrom, and a closed position, in which such providing and removing is prevented, said ribbon core engager comprising:
- a first hub means located in said interior space having a first hub portion that is selectively rotatable about a hub axis;
- a second hub means located in said interior space having a second hub portion spaced apart from said first hub portion along said hub axis and being movable back and forth along, and rotatable about, said hub axis such that a said ribbon core can be positioned between said second hub and said first hub portions when said second hub means is moved back from said first hub portion; and
- a motion converter means for moving said second hub portion along said hub axis toward said first hub portion when said cover means is correspondingly moved toward said closed position therefor and for allowing said second hub portion to move back along said hub axis from said first hub portion when said cover means is correspondingly moved toward said open position therefor, whereby said cover means being placed in said open position therefor allows positioning back said second hub portion from said first hub portion, and said cover means being placed in said closed position therefor causes said second hub portion to be positioned toward said first hub portion to thereby force any said ribbon core positioned therebetween against first and second hub portions.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a said ribbon core is providable in a ribbon cassette, and is positionable between said first hub portion and said second hub portion, and removed from therebetween, by inserting said ribbon cassette into, and removing said ribbon cassette from, said interior space when said cover means is in said open position therefor.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a shaft extending outside said interior space and connected to a rotary motion generator positioned exterior to said interior space, said first hub portion being on said shaft to permit selectively rotating said first hub portion by said generator, said first hub portion having a core engagement means for engaging a said ribbon core forced thereagainst to correspondingly force rotation of that said ribbon core when said first hub portion is rotated.
- 4. A recorder having an interior space, said recorder comprising:
- a cover means for providing access to said interior space that is selectively movable between an open position, in which a ribbon core having a supply ribbon at least partially wound therearound can selectively be provided in said interior space and removed therefrom, and a closed position, in which such providing and removing is prevented;
- a thermal printhead in said cover means having electrical resistors therein that are forced against said supply ribbon to in turn be forced against a recording sheet, if correspondingly positioned in said recorder, when said cover means is in said closed position therefor, said electrical resistors being capable of being heated sufficiently by electrical currents therethrough to cause depositions of materials in said supply ribbon on to said recording sheet; and
- an entry controlled ribbon core engager comprising:
- a first hub means located in said interior space having a first hub portion that is selectively rotatable about a hub axis;
- a second hub means located in said interior space having a second hub portion spaced apart from said first hub portion along said hub axis and being movable back and forth along, and rotatable about, said hub axis such that a said ribbon core can be positioned between said second hub and said first hub portions when said second hub means is moved back from said first hub portion; and
- a motion converter means for moving said second hub portion along said hub axis toward said first hub portion when said cover means is correspondingly moved toward said closed position therefor and for allowing said second hub portion to move back along said hub axis from said first hub portion when said cover means is correspondingly moved toward said open position therefor, whereby said cover means being placed in said open position therefor allows positioning back said second hub portion from said first hub portion, and said cover means being placed in said closed position therefor causes said second hub portion to be positioned toward said first hub portion to thereby force any said ribbon core positioned therebetween against said first and second hub portions.
- 5. A recorder having an interior space, said recorder comprising:
- a cover means for providing access to said interior space that is selectively movable between an open position, in which a take-up ribbon core having a supply ribbon at least partially wound therearound can selectively be provided in said interior space and removed therefrom, and a closed position, in which such providing and removing is prevented;
- a ribbon core engager comprising:
- a first hub means located in said interior space having a first hub portion that is selectively rotatable about a hub axis;
- a second hub means located in said interior space having a second hub portion spaced apart from said first hub portion along said hub axis and being movable back and forth along, and rotatable about, said hub axis such that a said ribbon core can be positioned between said second hub and said first hub portions when said second hub means is moved back from said first hub portion; and
- a motion converter means for moving said second hub portion along said hub axis toward said first hub portion when said cover means is correspondingly moved toward said closed position therefor and for allowing said second hub portion to move back along said hub axis from said first hub portion when said cover means is correspondingly moved toward said open position therefor, whereby said cover means being placed in said open position therefor allows positioning back said second hub portion from said first hub portion, and said cover means being placed in said closed position therefor causes said second hub portion to be positioned toward said first hub portion to thereby force any said ribbon core positioned therebetween against said first and second hub portions;
- a ribbon cassette capable of having said take-up ribbon core provided therein to be positionable between said first hub portion and said second hub portion, and removed from therebetween, by inserting said ribbon cassette into, and removing said ribbon cassette from, said interior space when said cover means is in said open position therefor, said ribbon cassette having a take-up core holder portion for holding said take-up ribbon core and a supply core holder portion for holding a supply ribbon core on each of which cores a supply ribbon is partially wound, and further having a pair of connecting arms each joining a corresponding part of said take-up portion with a corresponding part of said supply portion to thereby space them apart from one another, each said connecting arm forming at least a portion of those sides defining a notch; and
- a rod positioned in said interior space substantially parallel to said hub axis on which said notches in said pair of connecting arms are positioned in supporting said ribbon cassette on said rod when said second hub portion is positioned back from said first hub portion.
- 6. A method of providing access to an interior space in a recorder through a cover means that is selectively movable between an open position, in which a ribbon core having a supply of ribbons at least partially wound therearound can selectively be provided in said interior space and removed therefrom, and a closed position, in which such providing and removing is prevented, said method comprising:
- opening said cover means, thereby giving access to said interior space in which a first hub means and a second hub means are located spaced apart from one another along, and rotatable about, a hub axis, to thereby allow moving a second hub portion of said second hub means back from a first hub portion of said first hub means along said hub axis such that a said ribbon core can be positioned between said first and second hub portions;
- positioning a said ribbon core between said first and second hub portions in said interior space;
- closing said cover means, thereby covering said interior space, to force moving said second hub portion toward said first hub portion and so force them against said ribbon core positioned therebetween.
- 7. The method of claim 6 further comprising opening again said cover means to again provide access to said interior space, moving said second hub portion back from said first hub portion, and removing said ribbon core from said interior space.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said ribbon core is providable in a ribbon cassette and, if said ribbon cassette is positioned between said first and second hub portions in said interior space, said ribbon cassette being removable therefrom and said interior space by removing same when said cover means is in said open position therefor.
- 9. The method of claim 6 wherein said ribbon core is providable in a ribbon cassette, and is positionable between said first hub portion and said second hub portion by inserting said ribbon cassette into said interior space therebetween when said cover means is in said open position therefor.
