Claims
- 1. A reactor for decomposing halogenated organic compounds comprising in combination:
- a generally horizontal reaction chamber having opposite inlet and outlet ends and opposite upper and lower sidewalls, the reaction chamber being inclined to facilitate the flow of liquids along the lower sidewall of the reaction chamber to the outlet end;
- a burner at the inlet end for introducing a combustible mixture along with halogenated organic compounds into the reaction chamber so that the halogenated organic compounds are decomposed within the reaction chamber; and
- a coolant spray manifold mounted to the reaction chamber, the spray manifold extending approximately the length of the reaction chamber, the spray manifold having a plurality of spray orifices for introducing liquid coolant into the reaction chamber, the spray orifices being oriented so that the coolant is directed against the sidewalls for cooling the interior of the reaction chamber.
- 2. The reactor of claim 1, wherein:
- the upper sidewall has formed therein an elongate opening which extends generally along the length of the upper sidewall, the exterior of the upper sidewall being provided with a manifold seat;
- the spray manifold is movable between extended and retracted positions, the spray manifold projecting through the opening so that the plurality of orifices locate within the interior of the reaction chamber when in the extended position, the spray manifold having a shoulder which abuts against the manifold seat to effectively seal the opening when in the extended position to thereby prevent the escape of fluids from within the reaction chamber; and further comprising
- biasing means for biasing the spray manifold in the extended position, the biasing means allowing the spray manifold to move to the retracted position when pressure within the reaction chamber reaches a preselected amount so that the shoulder is moved away from the manifold seat to thus allow the reaction chamber to be vented through the opening.
- 3. The reactor of claim 1, wherein:
- the burner is comprised of a central conduit surrounded by at least one other outer conduit which is radially spaced from the central conduit to define an annular passage, components of the combustible mixture being introduced into the reaction chamber through the central conduit and annular passage.
