Claims
- 1. A hydroformylation process for producing aldehydes which comprises reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound selected from the group consisting of alpha-olefins containing from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, internal olefins containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms, and mixtures of such alpha and internal olefins with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium-poly-phosphite complex catalyst consisting of rhodium complexed with carbon monoxide and a poly-phosphite ligand having the formula: ##STR25## wherein each Ar group contains from 6 to 18 carbon atoms and represents an identical or different, substituted or unsubstituted aryl radical; wherein X represents a m-valent radical containing from 2 to 30 carbon atoms, selected from the group consisting of alkylene, alkylene-oxy-alkylene, arylene and arylene-(CH.sub.2)y--(Q)n--(CH.sub.2)y-arylene, wherein each arylene radical is the same as Ar defined above; wherein each y individually has a value of 0 or 1; wherein each Q individually represents a divalent bridging group selected from the class consisting of --CR.sup.1 R.sup.2 --, --O--, --S--, --NR.sup.3 --, --SiR.sup.4 R.sup.5 -- and --CO--, wherein each R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 radical individually represents a radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, phenyl, tolyl and anisyl, wherein each R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 radical individually represents --H or --CH.sub.3 ; wherein each n has a value of 0 or 1; and wherein m has a value of 2 to 6; and in the presence of a free poly-phosphite ligand having a formula as defined by Formula I above; and wherein the hydroformylation reaction conditions comprise, a reaction temperature in the range of from about 50.degree. C. to 120.degree. C., a total gas pressure of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and olefinically unsaturated organic compound of from about 1 to about 1500 psia., a hydrogen partial pressure of from about 15 to about 160 psia., a carbon monoxide partial pressure of from about 1 to about 120 psia., and wherein the reaction medium contains from about 4 to about 100 moles of said poly-phosphite ligand per mole of rhodium in said medium.
- 2. A process as defined in claim 1, wherein the poly-phosphite ligand complexed with the rhodium and the free poly-phosphite ligand also present are each individually identical or different ligands selected from the class consisting of the formulas ##STR26## wherein in Formulas (II) and (III), Q is --CR.sup.1 R.sup.2 wherein each R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 radical individually represents a radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, phenyl, tolyl and anisyl; wherein each Y.sup.1, Y.sup.2, Z.sup.2, and Z.sup.3 group individually represents an identical or different radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkyl radical having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl and alicyclic radicals, as well as cyano, halogen, nitro, trifluoromethyl, hydroxy, as well as carbonyloxy, amino, acyl, phosphonyl, oxycarbonyl, amido, sulfonyl, sulfonyl, silyl, alkoxy, and thionyl radicals, wherein m has a value of 2 to 4 and wherein X and n are the same as defined above.
- 3. A process as defined in claim 2, wherein the olefin starting material is selected from the group consisting of butene-1, butene-2, isobutylene, and an olefin mixture consisting essentially of butene-1 and butene-2, wherein Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 are branched alkyl radicals having from 3 to 5 carbon atoms, wherein Z.sup.2 and Z.sup.3 are methoxy radicals; wherein X is 1,4-naphthylene, 1,5-naphthylene, ethylene, or a substituted phenylene-(Q).sub.n -phenylene radical containing substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl and alkoxy radicals; wherein each Q is --CH.sub.2 -- or --CHCH.sub.3 --; wherein m is 2 and wherein n is the same as defined above.
- 4. A process as defined in claim 3, wherein Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 represent t-butyl radicals.
- 5. A process as defined in claim 1, wherein the poly-phosphite ligand complexed with the rhodium and the free poly-phosphite ligand also present are each individually identical or different ligands having a formula selected from the group consisting of ##STR27## wherein in Formulas (IV) and (V), Q is --CR.sup.1 R.sup.2 wherein each R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 radical individually represents a radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, phenyl, tolyl and anisyl; wherein each Y.sup.1, Y.sup.2, Z.sup.2, and Z.sup.3 group individually represents an identical or different radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkyl radical having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl and alicyclic radicals, as well as cyano, halogen, nitro, trifluoromethyl, hydroxy, carbonyloxy, amino, acyl, phosphonyl, oxycarbonyl, amido, sulfonyl, sulfonyl, silyl, alkoxy, and thionyl radicals, wherein m has a value of 2 and wherein X and n are the same as defined above.
- 6. A process as defined in claim 5, wherein the olefin starting material is selected from the group consisting of butene-1, butene-2, isobutylene, and an olefin mixture consisting essentially of butene-1 and butene-2, wherein Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 are branched alkyl radicals having from 3 to 5 carbon atoms, wherein Z.sup.2 and Z.sup.3 are methoxy radicals, wherein X is 1,4-naphthylene, 1,5-naphthylene, ethylene, or a substituted phenylene-(Q).sub.n -phenylene radical containing substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl and alkoxy radicals and wherein Q is --CH.sub.2 -- or --CHCH.sub.3 --; wherein m is 2 and n is the same as defined above.
- 7. A process as defined in claim 6, wherein Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 represent t-butyl radicals.
- 8. A process as defined in claim 7, wherein the ligand is a ligand of Formula IV and X is 1,4-naphthylene or 1,5-naphthylene.
- 9. A process as defined in claim 2, wherein the poly-phosphite ligand complexed with the rhodium and the free poly-phosphite ligand also present are ligands having the formula ##STR28##
- 10. A process are defined in claim 5, wherein the poly-phosphite ligand complexed with the rhodium and the free poly-phosphite ligand also present are ligands having the formula ##STR29##
