Claims
- 1. A transmission for use in a motor vehicle having an engine and front and rear drivelines, said transmission comprising:
- a housing;
- a first shaft supported for rotation in said housing and adapted to be driven by the engine;
- a second shaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling said second shaft to said first shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios;
- a third shaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a first gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a first speed ratio relative thereto;
- a second gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a second speed ratio relative thereto;
- a clutch for selectively coupling one of said first and second gears to said third shaft for causing driven rotation thereof at one of said first and second speed ratios; and
- an interaxle differential mounted in said housing and having an input member rotatably driven by said third shaft, a first output member adapted to be interconnected to the front driveline, and a second output member adapted to be interconnected to the rear driveline, said interaxle differential operable for permitting speed differentiation between said first and second output members while delivering drive torque thereto.
- 2. The transmission of claim 1 wherein said clutch includes a range collar movable between a first position whereat said first gear is coupled to said third shaft, and a second position whereat said second gear is coupled to said third shaft.
- 3. The transmission of claim 2 wherein said clutch further comprises a first synchronizer for causing speed synchronization between said first gear and said third shaft in response to movement of said range collar to said first position, and a second synchronizer for causing speed synchronization between said third shaft and said second gear in response to movement of said range collar to said second position.
- 4. The transmission of claim 2 wherein said clutch can be moved to a third position disengaged from each of said first and second gear whereat said third shaft is uncoupled from driven rotation with said second shaft.
- 5. The transmission of claim 1 further comprising a second clutch operable for coupling any two of said input and output members of said interaxle differential to prevent speed differentiation between said first and second output members.
- 6. The transmission of claim 5 wherein said second clutch includes a lock-out collar movable between a locked position directly coupling said input member to one of said output members for shifting said interaxle differential into a locked mode, and an open position uncoupling said input member from said one output member for permitting speed differentiation between said output members of said interaxle differential.
- 7. The transmission of claim 1 further comprising a second clutch operable for selectively disconnecting one of said first and second output members from driven connection with its corresponding driveline.
- 8. The transmission of claim 7 wherein said second clutch includes a mode collar movable between a 4WD position whereat said one of said first and second output members is coupled to its corresponding driveline for establishing a four-wheel drive mode, and a 2WD position whereat said one of said first and second output members is uncoupled from its corresponding driveline for establishing a two-wheel drive mode.
- 9. The transmission of claim 8 wherein said second clutch further comprises a synchronizer for causing speed synchronization between said one of said first and second output members and its corresponding driveline in response to movement of said mode collar to said 4WD position.
- 10. A transmission for use in a motor vehicle having an engine and front and rear drivelines, said transmission comprising:
- a housing;
- an input shaft supported for rotation in said housing and adapted to be driven by the engine;
- a mainshaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling said mainshaft to said input shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios;
- a drive shaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a first range gear supported for rotation on said drive shaft and rotatably driven by said mainshaft at a high-range speed ratio;
- a second range gear supported for rotation on said drive shaft and rotatably driven by said mainshaft at a low-range speed ratio relative thereto;
- a clutch for selectively coupling one of said first and second range gears to said drive shaft; and
- an interaxle differential mounted in said housing and having an input member rotatably driven by said drive shaft, a first output member adapted to interconnected to the front driveline, and a second output member adapted to be interconnected to the rear driveline, said interaxle differential operable for permitting speed differentiation between said first and second output members while delivering drive torque thereto for establishing a full-time four-wheel high-range drive mode when said clutch couples said first range gear to said drive shaft and a full-time four-wheel low-range drive mode when said clutch couples said second range gear to said drive shaft.
- 11. The transmission of claim 10 wherein said clutch is movable between a high-range position for coupling said drive shaft to said first range gear whereat said full-time four-wheel high-range drive mode is established, and a low-range position for coupling said drive shaft to said second range gear whereat said full-time low-range four-wheel drive mode is established.
- 12. The transmission of claim 11 further comprising a synchronizer mechanism operable for causing speed synchronization between said drive shaft and said mainshaft in response to said clutch to be shifted between said high-range and low-range positions.
- 13. The transmission of claim 11 wherein said clutch can be moved to a neutral position disengaged from each of said first and second range gears whereat said drive shaft is uncoupled from driven rotation with said mainshaft.
- 14. The transmission of claim 10 further comprising a second clutch operable for coupling any two of said input and output members of said interaxle differential to prevent speed differentiation between said first and second output members.
- 15. The transmission of claim 14 wherein said second clutch includes a lock-out collar movable between a locked position directly coupling said input member to one of said output members for shifting said interaxle differential into a locked mode, and an open position uncoupling said input member from said one output member for permitting speed differentiation between said output members of said interaxle differential.
- 16. The transmission of claim 10 further comprising a second clutch operable for selectively disconnecting one of said first and second output members from driven connection with its corresponding driveline.
- 17. The transmission of claim 16 wherein said second clutch includes a mode collar movable between a 4WD position whereat said one of said first and second output members is coupled to its corresponding driveline for establishing a four-wheel drive mode, and a 2WD position whereat said one of said first and second output members is uncoupled from its corresponding driveline for establishing a two-wheel drive mode.
- 18. The transmission of claim 17 wherein said second clutch further comprises a synchronizer for causing speed synchronization between said one of said first and second output members and its corresponding driveline in response to movement of said mode collar to said 4WD position.
- 19. A transmission for use in a motor vehicle having an engine and front and rear drivelines, said transmission comprising:
- a housing;
- a first shaft supported for rotation in said housing and adapted to be driven by the engine;
- a second shaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling said second shaft to said first shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios;
- a third shaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a range shift mechanism for selectively coupling said third shaft to said second shaft for driven rotation at one of a high-range speed ratio and a low-range speed ratio, said range shift mechanism includes a first gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at said high-range speed ratio, a second gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at said low-range speed ratio, and a range collar supported for rotation with said third shaft and sliding movement relative thereto between a first position coupling said first gear for rotation with said third shaft and a second position coupling said second gear for rotation with said third shaft;
- an interaxle differential mounted in said housing and having an input member rotatably driven by said third shaft, a first output member adapted to be interconnected to the front driveline, and a second output member adapted to be interconnected to the rear driveline, said interaxle differential operable for permitting speed differentiation between said first and second output members while delivering drive torque to the front and rear drivelines from said third shaft; and
- a lock-out clutch operable in an open mode for permitting speed differentiation between said first and second output members, said lock-out clutch is further operable in a locked mode for inhibiting speed differentiation between said first and second output members.
- 20. The transmission of claim 19 wherein said lock-out clutch includes a collar movable between a locked position whereat said input member is directly coupled to one of said output members for establishing said locked mode and an open position whereat said input member is de-coupled from said one output member for establishing said open mode.
- 21. The transmission of claim 19 further comprising a mode shift mechanism operable in a 2WD mode for uncoupling one of said first and second output members from its corresponding driveline for establishing a two-wheel drive mode, and said mode shift mechanism is operable in a 4WD mode for coupling said one of said first and second output members to its corresponding driveline for establishing a four-wheel drive mode.
- 22. A transmission for use in a motor vehicle having an engine and front and rear drivelines, said transmission comprising:
- a housing;
- a first shaft supported for rotation in said housing and adapted to be driven by the engine;
- a second shaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling said second shaft to said first shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios;
- a third shaft supported for rotation in said housing;
- a first gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a first speed ratio relative thereto;
- a second gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a second speed ratio relative thereto;
- a first clutch for selectively coupling one of said first and second gears to said third shaft;
- an interaxle differential mounted in said housing and having an input member rotatably driven by said third shaft, a first output member adapted to interconnected to the front driveline, and a second output member adapted to be interconnected to the rear driveline, said interaxle differential operable for permitting speed differentiation between said first and second output members while delivering drive torque thereto; and
- a second clutch operable in a 2WD mode for uncoupling one of said first and output members from its corresponding driveline for establishing a two-wheel drive mode, and said second clutch is further operable in a 4WD mode for coupling said one output member to its corresponding driveline for establishing a four-wheel drive mode.
- 23. The transmission of claim 22 further comprising a third clutch operable in a locked mode for directly coupling two of the three members of said interaxle differential for preventing speed differentiation between said first and second output members, said third clutch is further operable in an open mode for permitting differential action across said interaxle differential.
- 24. The transmission of claim 22 wherein said first clutch includes a range collar movable between a first position whereat said first gear is coupled to said third shaft, and a second position whereat said second gear is coupled to said third shaft.
- 25. The transmission of claim 24 wherein said first clutch further comprises a first synchronizer for causing speed synchronization between said first gear and said third shaft in response to movement of said range collar to said first position, and a second synchronizer for causing speed synchronization between said third shaft and said second gear in response to movement of said range collar to said second position.
- 26. The transmission of claim 22 wherein said second clutch includes a mode collar movable between a 4WD position whereat said one of said first and second output members is coupled to its corresponding driveline for establishing said four-wheel drive mode, and a 2WD position whereat said one of said first and second output members is uncoupled from its corresponding driveline for establishing said two-wheel drive mode.
- 27. The transmission of claim 26 wherein said second clutch further comprises a synchronizer for causing speed synchronization between said one of said first and second output members and its corresponding driveline in response to movement of said mode collar to said 4WD position.
- 28. A transmission for use in a motor vehicle having an engine and front and rear drivelines, said transmission comprising:
- a first shaft adapted to be driven by the engine;
- a second shaft;
- a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling said second shaft to said first shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios;
- a third shaft;
- a first gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a first speed ratio relative thereto;
- a second gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a second speed ratio relative thereto;
- a first clutch for selectively coupling one of said first and second gears to said third shaft;
- an interaxle differential having an input member rotatably driven by said third shaft, a first output member adapted to interconnected to the front driveline, and a second output member adapted to be interconnected to the rear driveline, said interaxle differential operable for permitting speed differentiation between said first and second output members while delivering drive torque thereto; and
- a second clutch operable in a 2WD mode for uncoupling one of said first and output members from its corresponding driveline for establishing a two-wheel drive mode, and said second clutch is further operable in a 4WD mode for coupling said one output member to its corresponding driveline for establishing a four-wheel drive mode.
- 29. A motor vehicle comprised of:
- an engine;
- a front driveline interconnecting a set of front wheels;
- a rear driveline interconnecting a set of rear wheels; and
- a transmission including a first shaft driven by said engine, a second shaft, a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling said second shaft to said first shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios, a third shaft, a first gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a first speed ratio relative thereto, a second gear supported for rotation on said third shaft and rotatably driven by said second shaft at a second speed ratio relative thereto, a clutch for selectively coupling one of said first and second gears to said third shaft, and an interaxle differential having an input member rotatably driven by said third shaft, a first output member interconnected to said front driveline, and a second output member interconnected to said rear driveline, said interaxle differential operable for permitting speed differentiation between said first and second output members while delivering drive torque to said front and rear drivelines from said third shaft.
- 30. The motor vehicle of claim 29 wherein said clutch is a bi-directional synchronizer clutch assembly located between said first and second gears.
