Claims
- 1. Apparatus for communicating amplitude modulated vestigial-sideband (AM-VSB) signals over an optical communication path comprising:
- a light source for providing light at a wavelength .lambda.;
- means for modulating light from said source by an AM-VSB signal;
- means for optically amplifying the modulated light in an optical amplifier other than a semiconductor optical amplifier, said optical amplifier exhibiting gain at said wavelength .lambda. and producing only minimal distortion that is tolerable for AM-VSB signal distribution; and
- means for introducing the amplified modulated light output from said optical amplifier to an optical communication fiber.
- 2. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said optical amplifier is an optical fiber amplifier.
- 3. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said optical amplifier is a rare earth doped optical fiber amplifier.
- 4. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said optical amplifier is a rare earth doped optical amplifier.
- 5. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said optical amplifier is an erbium doped optical amplifier.
- 6. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said optical amplifier is an erbium doped optical fiber amplifier.
- 7. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said modulating means are adapted to modulate said light by a television signal containing a plurality of AM-VSB subcarriers, each corresponding to a different television channel.
- 8. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said light source is a laser.
- 9. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said optical amplifier comprises:
- a doped amplifying fiber;
- means for inputting said modulated light to said doped amplifying fiber; and
- means for inputting light from a pump laser to said doped amplifying fiber.
- 10. Apparatus in accordance with claim 9 wherein said amplifying fiber is doped with a rare earth element.
- 11. Apparatus in accordance with claim 10 wherein said rare earth element is erbium.
