Claims
- 1. A transmitting and receiving device, comprising:a receiver for receiving a notification that contains an identifier identifying a message, wherein the message is stored remotely from the transmitting and receiving device; a user interface for enabling a user of the device to specify a function to be performed on the message; and command message creating and transmitting means for creating a command message that includes a function identifier identifying the function specified by the user and for transmitting the command message in response to the receiver receiving a selective call signal.
- 2. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 1, wherein the receiver receives the notification and the selective call signal from a paging network.
- 3. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 1, wherein the receiver receives the notification and the selective call signal from a mobile radiotelephone network.
- 4. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 1, wherein the command message creating and transmitting means comprises a transmitter and a processor.
- 5. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 4, wherein the transmitter transmits over a paging network the command message.
- 6. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 4, wherein the transmitter transmits over a mobile radiotelephone network the command message.
- 7. A communication system, comprising:a base station; a system in communication with the base station; and a transmitting and receiving device in communication with the base station, wherein the transmitting and receiving device comprises: a receiver for receiving a notification that contains an identifier identifying a message, wherein the message is stored in said system; a user interface for enabling a user of the device to specify a function to be performed on the message; and command message creating and transmitting means for creating a command message that includes a function identifier identifying the function specified by the user and for transmitting the command message to said system in response to the receiver receiving a selective call signal.
- 8. The communication system of claim 7, wherein the transmitting and receiving device further comprises at least one antenna for receiving the notification and the selective call signal and for propagating the message that includes the function identifier.
- 9. The communication system of claim 7, wherein the base station is part of a paging network.
- 10. The communication system of claim 9, wherein the command message creating and transmitting means transmits to the system the command message by transmitting the command message to the base station, which then forwards it to the system.
- 11. The communication system of claim 7, wherein the base station is part of a mobile radiotelephone network.
- 12. The communication system of claim 11, wherein the command message creating and transmitting means transmits to the system the command message by transmitting the command message to the base station, which then forwards it to the system.
- 13. In a transmitting and receiving device for transmitting data to and receiving data from a communication system, a method comprising the steps of:receiving a notification that contains an identifier identifying a message, wherein the message is stored remotely from the transmitting and receiving device; providing a user interface that enables a user of the device to specify a function to be performed on the message; and creating a command message that includes a function identifier identifying the function specified by the user; and transmitting the command message in response to the receiver receiving a selective call signal.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein at least one antenna is used for receiving the notification and selective call signal and for propagating the command message.
- 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of receiving the notification includes receiving the notification from a paging network.
- 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of receiving the notification includes receiving the notification from a mobile radiotelephone network.
- 17. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of transmitting the command message includes transmitting the command message over a paging network.
- 18. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of transmitting the command message includes transmitting the command message over a mobile radiotelephone network.
- 19. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 1, wherein the command message further includes an image.
- 20. The communication system of claim 7, wherein the command message further includes an image.
