Claims
- 1. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, comprising: p1 a transparent blend having
- (a) from about 80 to about 100 parts by weight of an epoxy resin;
- (b) from about 5 to about 30 parts by weight of a boroxine having the formula: ##STR12## where R is a compound having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and (c) from about 1 part to about 40 parts by weight of an organic phosphorus compound having the following formula: ##STR13## where R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon radicals having from 1 to 24 carbon atoms, halo-substituted organic radicals having from 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and multihalo-substituted organic radicals having from 1 to 24 carbon atoms; and where R.sub.3 may be the same or different radicals
- where R.sub.4 is selected from the group consisting of all the radicals of R.sub.3, oxygen, and radicals of the formula: --O--R.sub.6, where R.sub.6 is selected from the group consisting of all the radicals of R.sub.3, organo-phosphorus polymeric radicals, and organo-phosphorus esters;
- where R.sub.5 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, oxygen, sulfur, halogens or no radical at all; and
- where Z is selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur, or no radical at all.
- 2. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 1, wherein said transparent blend further has from about 1 part to about 10 parts by weight of a phenyl substituted alkyl alcohol, said alkyl alcohol having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 3. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 2, wherein R of said boroxine is an alkyl compound having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; and
- wherein said alkyl alcohol has from 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 4. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 3, wherein said boroxine comprises about 10 parts by weight; and
- wherein said phenyl substituted alkyl alcohol comprises about 3 parts by weight.
- 5. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 2, wherein said transparent blend further comprises from about 1 part to about 40 parts by weight of a phosphite compound selected from the group consisting of diphenyl phosphite, trisnonylphenyl phosphite, triphenyl phosphite, diphenylisooctyl phosphite, phenyl diisodecyl phosphite, diphenylisodecyl phosphite, and combinations thereof.
- 6. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 1, wherein said organic phosphorus compound is a phosphate compound having the following formula: ##STR14## where R.sub.3 and Z are the same radicals as defined in claim 1 and R.sub.4 is selected from the group of radicals consisting of phenoxy, alkyl-substituted phenoxy, alkoxy, alkyl-substituted alkoxy, chloro-substituted phenoxy, and chloro-substituted alkoxy.
- 7. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 6, wherein said phosphate compound has the following formula: ##STR15## where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same radicals as defined in claim 6.
- 8. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 7, wherein said phosphate compound is selected from the group consisting of: tri(beta, beta' dichloroisopropyl)phosphate, tri(betachloroethyl) phosphate, and combinations thereof.
- 9. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 1, wherein said organic phosphorus compound comprises from about 5 to about 35 parts by weight.
- 10. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 9, wherein said organic phosphorus compound comprises from about 10 to about 20 parts by weight.
- 11. A transparent composition curable to a product having resistance to intense heat, according to claim 1, wherein said epoxy resin comprises a bisphenol-F type epoxy resin.
