Claims
- 1. A financial transaction card that is transparent or translucent to human viewing yet detectable by automated card processing equipment having near Infrared source/detector pairs, each source/detector pair including a near Infrared light source and a near Infrared light detector respectively positioned to face opposing sides of said card when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection and to detect said card by sensing an interruption of near Infrared light transmitted from said source to said detector due to the presence of said card, comprising:a substantially planar material sheet having upper and lower surfaces bounded by a continuous peripheral edge; said material sheet having an area that is at least minimally transparent or translucent to human viewing and located so as to span an optical pathway of one or more of said source/detector pairs when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection; and an Infrared light filter associated with said area, said filter providing sufficient opacity to near Infrared light to render said card detectable by said source/detector pairs and being arranged to block the optical pathways of all source/detector pairs spanned by said area, thereby triggering detection of said card, while still allowing said card to remain transparent or translucent to visible light in said area.
- 2. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said area spans the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 3. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said area spans less than the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 4. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said filter spans the entirety of said area.
- 5. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said filter spans less than the entirety of said area.
- 6. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said filter spans the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 7. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said filter spans less than the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 8. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said filter is disposed on one surface of said material sheet.
- 9. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 1 wherein said filter is disposed on both surfaces of said material sheet.
- 10. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 9 wherein said filter is disposed within said material sheet.
- 11. A method for manufacturing a financial transaction card that is transparent or translucent to human viewing yet detectable by automated card processing equipment having near Infrared source/detector pairs, each source/detector pair including a near Infrared light source and a near Infrared light detector respectively positioned to face opposing sides of said card when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection and to detect said card by sensing an interruption of near Infrared light transmitted from said source to said detector due to the presence of said card, comprising the steps of:forming a substantially planar material sheet having upper and lower surfaces bounded by a continuous peripheral edge; said material sheet being formed with an area that is at least minimally transparent or translucent to human viewing and located so as to span an optical pathway of one or more of said source/detector pairs when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection; and associating a near Infrared light filter with said area, said filter providing sufficient opacity to near Infrared light to render said card detectable by said source/detector pairs and being arranged to block the optical pathways of all source/detector pairs spanned by said area, thereby triggering detection of said card, while still allowing said card to remain transparent or translucent to visible light in said area.
- 12. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said area spans the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 13. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said area spans less than the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 14. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said filter spans the entirety of said area.
- 15. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said filter spans less than the entirety of said area.
- 16. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said filter spans the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 17. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said filter spans less than the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 18. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said filter is disposed on one surface of said material sheet.
- 19. A method in accordance with claim 11 wherein said filter is disposed on both surfaces of said material sheet.
- 20. A method in accordance with claim 19 wherein filter is disposed within said material sheet.
- 21. A financial transaction card that is transparent or translucent to human viewing yet detectable by automated card processing equipment having near Infrared source/detector pairs, each source/detector pair including a near Infrared light source and a near Infrared light detector respectively positioned to face opposing sides of said card when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection and to detect said card by sensing an interruption of near Infrared light transmitted from said source to said detector due to the presence of said card, comprising:a sheet of material having an area that is at least minimally transparent or translucent to human viewing and located so as to span an optical pathway of one or more of said source/detector pairs when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection; and filter means associated with said area for rendering said card detectable by source/detector pairs in said automated processing equipment, said filter means providing sufficient opacity to near Infrared light to render said card detectable by said source/detector pairs and being arranged to block the optical pathways of all source/detector pairs spanned by said area, thereby triggering detection of said card, while still allowing said card to remain transparent or translucent to visible light in said area.
- 22. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said area spans the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 23. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said area spans less than the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 24. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said filter means spans the entirety of said area.
- 25. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said filter means spans less than the entirety of said area.
- 26. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said filter means spans the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 27. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said filter means spans less than the entire region of said material sheet defined by said peripheral edge.
- 28. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said filter means is disposed on one surface of said material sheet.
- 29. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 21 wherein said filter means is disposed on both surfaces of said material sheet.
- 30. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 29 wherein said filter means is disposed within said material sheet.
- 31. A financial transaction card that is transparent or translucent to human viewing yet detectable by automated card processing equipment having near Infrared source/detector pairs arranged in two parallel bands separated by an intermediate band, each source/detector pair including a near Infrared light source and a near Infrared light detector respectively positioned to face opposing sides of said card when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection and to detect said card by sensing an interruption of near Infrared light transmitted from said source to said detector due to the presence of said card, comprising:a substantially planar material sheet having upper and lower surfaces bounded by a continuous peripheral edge; said material sheet having one or more areas that are at least minimally transparent or translucent to human viewing and located so as to span an optical pathway of one or more of said source/detector pairs when said card is positioned in said equipment for detection; and an Infrared light filter associated with said one or more areas, said filter providing sufficient opacity to near Infrared light to render said card detectable by said source/detector pairs and being located on said card so as to be in correspondence with said two parallel bands of said automated card processing equipment to block the optical pathways of all source/detector pairs spanned by said one or more areas, thereby triggering detection of said card, while still allowing said card to remain transparent or translucent to visible light in said one or more areas.
- 32. A financial transaction card in accordance with claim 31 wherein said near Infrared light filter is located so as to be in correspondence with a first parallel band having a band height of at least 0.826 inches and a second parallel band having a band height of at least 1.000 inch, said first and separate parallel bands being separated by an intermediate band having a nominal band height of 0.389 inches.
