Claims
- 1. In an agricultural implement supporting ground working devices, said agricultural implement having a draw bar adapted for connection to a prime mover; a frame connected to said draw bar and having mounted thereon wheels for mobilely supporting said frame for movement over the ground; and a tool bar connected to said frame and including left and right wing members pivotally movable about a wing pivot axis relative to said frame, the improvement comprising:
- each of said wing members being supported at a distal end remote from said wing pivot axis by a wheel assembly;
- a first latching mechanism supported on said draw bar forwardly of said wing members; and
- a second latching mechanism mounted on each of said wing members at a location remote from the respective said wing pivot axes, said second latching mechanism being engageable with said first latching mechanism when said wing members are pivotally moved from a laterally extending operating position to a forwardly extending transport position to lock said wing members in said transport position, said second latching mechanism being generally vertically movable relative to said draw bar when second latching mechanism is engaged with said first latching mechanism.
- 2. The agricultural implement of claim 1 wherein said wing members are supported on said wheel assemblies when in said transport position.
- 3. The agricultural implement of claim 2 wherein said first latching mechanism includes a pair of laterally opposed latch retainer bars that are engaged by the respective said second latching mechanisms, said latch retainer bars being oriented generally vertically.
- 4. The agricultural implement of claim 3 wherein each of said second latching mechanisms include a latch hook that is pivotally movable between a latch position and a release position, the movement of said latch hook to a latch position being operable to capture the corresponding said latch retainer bar when engaged therewith.
- 5. The agricultural implement of claim 4 wherein each said latch hook is operatively coupled to a wing latch actuator to power the pivotal movement thereof between said latch position and said release position.
- 6. The agricultural implement of claim 5 wherein said wing latch actuator is also operatively coupled to a wheel locking apparatus associated with the corresponding said wheel assembly, said wheel locking apparatus being operable to convert said wheel assembly between a fixed position in which said wheel assembly is fixed in a forwardly directing orientation relative to said wing assembly and a castering position in which said wheel assembly is free to caster relative to said wing assembly.
- 7. The agricultural implement of claim 6 wherein said wheel lock apparatus is operable to lock the corresponding said wheel assembly in said fixed position when said wing assemblies are moved into said laterally extending operating position, and operable to release the corresponding said wheel assembly into said castering position when said wing assemblies are being moved to said transport position.
- 8. The agricultural implement of claim 7 wherein the operation of said wing latch actuator to effect movement of said latch hook from said latching position to said release position, to allow said second latching mechanism to become disengaged from said first latching mechanism, draws said latch hook against a stop against which said wing latch actuator can push to effect movement of said wheel lock apparatus to engage said wheel assembly.
- 9. The agricultural implement of claim 8 wherein said wheel lock apparatus includes a wheel lock hook engageable with an opening in a disk forming part of said wheel assembly.
- 10. The agricultural implement of claim 9 wherein said wheel lock apparatus further includes a lost motion link allowing a movement of said wing latch actuator without forcing a corresponding movement of said wheel lock hook, said wheel lock hook being biased into engagement with said disk such that said lost motion link permits said wheel lock hook to move into engagement with said disk until becoming aligned with and engaged into said opening in said disk to lock said wheel assembly in said fixed position.
- 11. An agricultural implement comprising:
- a draw bar adapted for connection to a prime mover;
- a frame connected to said draw bar and having mounted thereon wheels for mobilely supporting said frame for movement over the ground;
- a tool bar connected to said frame and including left and right wing members pivotally movable about a wing pivot axis relative to said frame, said wing members being movable from a laterally extending field operating position to a forwardly folded transport position in which said wing members have been moved forwardly;
- a wheel assembly supporting each of said wing members at a distal end remote from said wing pivot axis by a wheel assembly;
- a transport lock mechanism operable to lock said wing members in said forwardly oriented transport position, said transport lock mechanism being movable between a locked position and a released position;
- a wheel lock apparatus operable to convert each said wheel assemblies from a fixed position in which said wheel assembly is fixed in a forwardly directing orientation relative to said wing assembly to a castering position in which said wheel assembly is free to caster relative to said wing assembly; and
- a wing latch actuator operatively connected to said transport lock mechanism and said wheel lock mechanism for joint actuation thereof, said wing latch actuator being operable to move said wheel lock apparatus to allow said wheel assembly to move into said castering position when said transport lock mechanism is moved toward said locked position.
- 12. The agricultural implement of claim 11 wherein said wheel lock apparatus includes a wheel lock hook engageable with an opening in a disk forming part of said wheel assembly, said wheel lock apparatus further including a lost motion link allowing a movement of said wing latch actuator without forcing a corresponding movement of said wheel lock hook, said wheel lock hook being biased into engagement with said disk such that said lost motion link permits said wheel lock hook to move into engagement with said disk until becoming aligned with and engaged into said opening in said disk to lock said wheel assembly in said fixed position.
- 13. The agricultural implement of claim 12 wherein said transport latch mechanism is operable to accommodate generally vertical movement of said wing member relative to said draw bar when oriented in said forwardly extending transport position, a first latching mechanism supported on said draw bar forwardly of said wing members; and
- a second latching mechanism mounted on each of said wing members at a location remote from the respective said wing pivot axes, said second latching mechanism being engageable with said first latching mechanism when said wing members are pivotally moved from a laterally extending operating position to a forwardly extending transport position to lock said wing members in said transport position, said second latching mechanism being generally vertically movable relative to said draw bar when second latching mechanism is engaged with said first latching mechanism.
- 14. The agricultural implement of claim 13 wherein said first latching mechanism includes a pair of laterally opposed latch retainer bars that are engaged by the respective said second latching mechanisms, said latch retainer bars being oriented generally vertically, and each of said second latching mechanisms includes a latch hook that is pivotally movable between a latch position and a release position, the movement of said latch hook to a latch position being operable to capture the corresponding said latch retainer bar when engaged therewith.
- 15. The agricultural implement of claim 14 wherein the operation of said wing latch actuator to effect movement of said latch hook from said latching position to said release position, to allow said second latching mechanism to become disengaged from said first latching mechanism, draws said latch hook against a stop against which said wing latch actuator can push to effect movement of said wheel lock apparatus to engage said wheel assembly.
- 16. The agricultural implement of claim 15 wherein each said latch hook is operatively coupled to the corresponding said wing latch actuator to power the pivotal movement thereof between said latch position and said release position, the operation of said wing latch actuator to effect movement of said latch hook from said latching position to said release position, to allow said second latching mechanism to become disengaged from said first latching mechanism, draws said latch hook against a stop against which said wing latch actuator can push to effect movement of said wheel lock apparatus to engage said wheel assembly.
- 17. An agricultural implement comprising:
- a draw bar adapted for connection to a prime mover;
- a frame connected to said draw bar and having mounted thereon wheels for mobilely supporting said frame for movement over the ground;
- a tool bar connected to said frame and including left and right wing members pivotally movable about a wing pivot axis relative to said frame, said wing members being movable from a laterally extending field operating position to a forwardly folded transport position in which said wing members have been moved forwardly;
- a wheel assembly supporting each of said wing members at a distal end remote from said wing pivot axis by a wheel assembly;
- a transport lock mechanism operable to lock said wing members in said forwardly oriented transport position, said transport lock mechanism being movable between a locked position and a released position and including
- a first latching mechanism supported on said draw bar forwardly of said wing members; and
- a second latching mechanism mounted on each of said wing members at a location remote from the respective said wing pivot axes, said second latching mechanism being engageable with said first latching mechanism when said wing members are pivotally moved from a laterally extending operating position to a forwardly extending transport position to lock said wing members in said transport position, said second latching mechanism being generally vertically movable relative to said draw bar when second latching mechanism is engaged with said first latching mechanism; and
- a wheel lock apparatus operable to convert each said wheel assembly from a fixed position in which said wheel assembly is fixed in a forwardly directing orientation relative to said wing assembly to a castering position in which said wheel assembly is free to caster relative to said wing assembly, the conversion of said wheel lock apparatus to said castering position being effected only after said wing members have started movement toward said transport position.
- 18. The agricultural implement of claim 17 further comprising:
- a wing latch actuator operatively connected to said transport lock mechanism and said wheel lock mechanism for joint actuation thereof, said wing latch actuator being operable to move said wheel lock apparatus to allow said wheel assembly to move into said castering position when said transport lock mechanism is moved toward said locked position.
- 19. The agricultural implement of claim 18 wherein said first latching mechanism includes a pair of laterally opposed latch retainer bars that are engaged by the respective said second latching mechanisms, said latch retainer bars being oriented generally vertically within a tower apparatus supported on said draw bar.
- 20. The agricultural implement of claim 19 wherein said wing members are supported on said wheel assemblies when in said transport position, said second latching mechanisms being vertically movable on said latch retainer bars to permit said wing members to follow ground undulations as guided by the respective said wheel assemblies.
- 21. The agricultural implement of claim 20 wherein each of said second latching mechanisms include a latch hook that is pivotally movable between a latch position and a release position, said wing latch actuators being connected to the corresponding said latch hook to effect movement thereof to capture the corresponding said latch retainer bar when engaged therewith.
- 22. An agricultural implement comprising:
- a draw bar adapted for connection to a prime mover;
- a frame connected to said draw bar and having mounted thereon wheels for mobilely supporting said frame for movement over the ground;
- a tool bar connected to said frame and including left and right wing members pivotally movable about a wing pivot axis relative to said frame, said wing members being movable from a laterally extending field operating position to a forwardly folded transport position in which said wing members have been moved forwardly;
- a transport lock mechanism operable to lock said wing members in said forwardly oriented transport position, said transport lock mechanism being movable between a locked position and a released position; and
- a wheel assembly supporting each of said wing members at a distal end remote from said wing pivot axis by a wheel assembly, said wing members being supported on said wheel assemblies when in said forwardly folded transport position, said transport lock mechanism being operable to permit each said wing member to move generally vertically relative to said draw bar while remaining locked in said transport position.
- 23. The agricultural implement of claim 22 wherein said transport lock mechanism includes:
- a latch tower having a pair of laterally opposed latch retainer bars that are oriented generally vertically; and
- a latching mechanism mounted on each of said wing members at a location remote from the respective said wing pivot axes, said latching mechanism being engageable with the corresponding said latch retainer bar when said wing members are pivotally moved from a laterally extending operating position to a forwardly extending transport position to lock said wing members in said transport position, said latching mechanisms being independently movable vertically along said latch retainer bars.
- 24. The agricultural implement of claim 23 wherein said transport lock mechanism further includes:
- a latch hook forming part of said latching mechanism and being pivotally movable between a latch position and a release position, the movement of said latch hook to a latch position being operable to capture the corresponding said latch retainer bar when engaged therewith; and
- a wing latch actuator operatively connected to said latch hook to effect movement thereof between said latch and release positions.
- 25. The agricultural implement of claim 24 further comprising:
- a wheel lock apparatus operable to convert each said wheel assembly from a fixed position, in which said wheel assembly is fixed in a forwardly directing orientation relative to said wing assembly, to a castering position, in which said wheel assembly is free to caster relative to said wing assembly, said wing latch actuator being operable to actuate said wheel lock apparatus to allow said wheel assembly to move into said castering position when said transport lock mechanism is actuated toward said locked position.
- 26. An agricultural implement comprising:
- a draw bar adapted for connection to a prime mover;
- a frame connected to said draw bar and having mounted thereon wheels for mobilely supporting said frame for movement over the ground;
- a tool bar connected to said frame and including left and right wing members pivotally movable about a wing pivot axis relative to said frame, said wing members being movable from a laterally extending field operating position to a folded transport position in which said wing members have been moved into a longitudinally extending orientation;
- a wheel assembly supporting each of said wing members at a distal end remote from said wing pivot axis by a wheel assembly, said wing members being supported on said wheel assemblies when in said forwardly folded transport position; and
- a wheel lock mechanism operably associated with said wheel assembly to selectively convert said wheel assembly between a fixed configuration, in which said wheel assembly is locked into a forwardly directed orientation, and a castering configuration, in which said wheel assembly is permitted to caster relative to the corresponding said wing assembly.
- 27. The agricultural implement of claim 26 wherein said wheel lock mechanism includes:
- a lock actuator;
- a wheel lock hook engageable with an opening in a disk forming part of said wheel assembly; and
- a lost motion link allowing a movement of said lock actuator without forcing a corresponding movement of said wheel lock hook, said wheel lock hook being biased into engagement with said disk such that said lost motion link permits said wheel lock hook to move into engagement with said disk until becoming aligned with and engaged into said opening in said disk to lock said wheel assembly in said fixed configuration.
- 28. The agricultural implement of claim 27 further comprising a transport lock mechanism operable to lock said wing members in said transport position, said transport lock mechanism being movable between a locked position and a released position.
- 29. The agricultural implement of claim 28 wherein said lock actuator is operatively connected to said transport lock mechanism and to said wheel lock mechanism for joint actuation thereof, said lock actuator being operable to move said wheel lock apparatus to allow said wheel assembly to move into said castering position when said transport lock mechanism is moved toward said locked position.
- 30. The agricultural implement of claim 29 wherein said transport lock mechanism includes:
- a latch tower supported on said draw bar and having a pair of laterally opposed latch retainer bars that are oriented generally vertically; and
- a latching mechanism mounted on each of said wing members at a location remote from the respective said wing pivot axes, said latching mechanism being engageable with the corresponding said latch retainer bar when said wing members are pivotally moved from a laterally extending operating position to a forwardly extending transport position to lock said wing members in said transport position, said latching mechanisms being independently movable vertically along said latch retainer bars.
- 31. The agricultural implement of claim 30 wherein said wing members are folded forwardly when moved into said transport position by wing fold actuators interconnecting said draw bar and each respective said wing member, said wing fold actuators being sized such that said lock actuator is operated before said wing fold actuators can be operated so that said wheel assemblies are placed into said castering configuration before said wing members are folded forwardly.
