Claims
- 1. A ring for maintaining the closure of a cylindrical container, the ring comprising:
an annular body; an annular outer limb depending from the body; an annular locking finger depending from the outer limb and extending radially inwardly; an annular inner limb depending from the body; and an annular flange depending from the body and extending radially inwardly; whereby the ring is constructed to engage the container such that the inner limb extends into a channel defined by the container, the locking finger engages an outward radial extension of the container, and the annular flange contacts the container to maintain closure of the container.
- 2. The ring of claim 1, wherein the outer limb and inner limb are substantially parallel.
- 3. The ring of claim 1, wherein the outer limb depends from the outer margin of the annular body.
- 4. The ring of claim 1, wherein the flange depends from the inner margin of the annular body.
- 5. The ring of claim 1, wherein the inner limb depends from the inner margin of the annular body.
- 6. The ring of claim 1, wherein the locking finger is defined by a locking surface extending radially inwardly and by a chamfered guide surface for guiding the finger to pass around the outward radial extension until the locking surface engages the roll as the ring is positioned to engage the container.
- 7. The ring of claim 1, wherein the ring engages the container such that the inner limb extends into a channel defined by a lid of the container, and the annular flange contacts the lid to retain the lid with the container thereby maintaining closure of the container.
- 8. The ring of claim 7, wherein, in the presence of pressure sufficient to force distortion of the lid outwardly from the interior of the container, the engagement of the locking finger with the outward radial extension increases with the force of the distortion.
- 9. The ring of claim 8, wherein, in the presence of the sufficient pressure, the inner limb applies a force to the channel thereby increasing the engagement of the lid with the container.
- 10. The ring of claim 1, wherein the ring is an integral member of generally rigid, resilient high impact plastic.
- 11. The ring of claim 1, wherein the annular flange includes an abutting surface, whereby the ring is constructed to engage the container such that the abutting surface contacts a lid placed in engagement with the container to maintain placement of the lid.
- 12. A device for maintaining closure of a container having a lid, the container defining a lip at the top edge of the container, the device comprising:
a body adapted to fit on top of the container; an outer limb depending from the body and extending about the lip of the container; a locking finger member depending from the outer limb and extending inwardly toward the container to engage at least two locations of the lip of the container; an inner limb depending from the body and adapted to fit within a channel defined in the lid; and an interior flange depending from the body, extending therefrom radially inwardly, and adapted to contact a portion of the lid disposed radially inward from the channel.
- 13. The device of claim 12, wherein, in the presence of pressure sufficient to force distortion of the lid outwardly from the interior of the container, the engagement of the locking finger with the lip increases with the force of the distortion.
- 14. The device of claim 12, wherein, in the presence of pressure sufficient to force distortion of the lid outwardly from the interior of the container, the inner limb applies a force to a radially inner wall of the channel thereby increasing the engagement of the lid with the container.
- 15. The device of claim 12, wherein the lip of the container comprises a toroidal roll of an upper margin of a sidewall of the container with an outer margin of a rim flange of the container, wherein the ring maintains closure of the container by maintaining engagement of the lid with the rim flange of the container.
- 16. The device of claim 12, wherein the flange comprises an abutting surface contacting a ridge extending from the upper surface of the lid.
- 17. The device of claim 12, wherein the container is cylindrical and the device is annular.
- 18. The device of claim 12, wherein the locking finger is annular and engages the lip about the circumference of the container.
- 19. A containment system comprising:
a cylindrical container adapted to securely contain a liquid substance therein, the container having an outward radial lip at its top edge; a lid adapted to fit into the top of the container; and a ring for maintaining closure of the lid with the container under pressure conditions, comprising:
an annular body; an annular outer limb depending from the body and passing around the lip of the container; an annular locking finger depending from the outer limb, extending radially inwardly therefrom, and engaging the lip of the container; an annular inner limb depending from the body, passing into the annular channel defined in the upper surface of the lid; and an annular flange depending from the body, extending therefrom radially inwardly, and contacting an annular ridge extending upwardly from the upper surface of the lid.
- 20. The container system of claim 19, wherein, in the presence of pressure sufficient to force distortion of the lid outwardly from the interior of the closed container, the engagement of the locking finger with the lip and a force of engagement between the inner limb and an interior wall of the annual channel increases with the force of the distortion.
