Claims
- 1. A surgical device for implantation of a deformable intraocular lens through a small incision in the eye, comprising:
- a body portion including a lens cartridge receiver;
- a lens holding portion connected to said body portion, said lens holding portion comprising a lens delivery passageway and a transverse hinge oriented transversely relative to said lens delivery passageway to allow the lens holding portion to be opened to receive the deformable intraocular lens and then closed for enclosing the lens readied for implantation, said lens holding portion being a lens cartridge configured to be received within said lens cartridge receiver of said body portion;
- a nozzle portion connected to said lens holding portion, said nozzle portion comprising a passageway and a tip for insertion through the incision in the eye, said passageway through said lens holding portion extending to said passageway through said nozzle portion; and
- a plunger slidably disposed within said body portion for forcing the deformable intraocular lens from the lens holding portion through the nozzle portion into the eye.
- 2. A device according to claim 1, wherein said lens holding portion is configured for receiving the deformable intraocular lens in a non-folded configuration.
- 3. A device according to claim 1, wherein said lens holding portion is a separate component connectable with said body portion.
- 4. A device according to claim 1, wherein said hinge of said lens holding portion is a live hinge.
- 5. A device according to claim 1, wherein said lens holding portion comprises a fixed portion hinged to a movable portion.
- 6. A device according to claim 5, wherein said fixed portion is connected to said body portion.
- 7. A device according to claim 1, wherein said lens holding portion comprises a movable portion hinged to another movable portion, said movable portions are connected to said body portion.
- 8. A device according to claim 1, wherein said transverse hinge is not located in a path of movement of said plunger.
- 9. A device according to claim 8, wherein said body portion is cylindrical, and said transverse axis is located off center relative to a center longitudinal axis of said body portion.
- 10. A device according to claim 1, wherein said nozzle portion is provided with a receiver for said lens holding portion.
- 11. A device according to claim 10, wherein said nozzle portion comprises a sleeve portion surrounding said lens holding portion.
- 12. A device according to claim 11, wherein said nozzle portion snap fits onto said lens holding portion.
- 13. A device according to claim 1, wherein said plunger is provided with a slotted tip for accommodating a trailing haptic of the deformable intraocular lens.
- 14. A device according to claim 1, wherein said lens cartridge and said lens injecting device are arranged so that said transverse hinge of said lens cartridge is positioned outside said lens injecting device when said lens cartridge is loaded or partially loaded into the lens cartridge receiver of the lens injecting device to allow inspection of the deformable intraocular lens when loaded in the lens cartridge.
- 15. A device according to claim 1, wherein said lens cartridge is inserted to a depth within said lens cartridge receiver of said lens injecting device such that said transverse hinge of said lens cartridge is located beyond an end of said lens cartridge receiver whereby the lens cartridge may be opened for inspecting the deformable intraocular lens or for loading the deformable intraocular lens into said lens cartridge prior to attachment of said nozzle portion.
- 16. A surgical device for implantation of a deformable intraocular lens through a small incision in the eye, comprising:
- an elongated body portion including a lens cartridge receiver;
- a lens cartridge connected to said elongated body portion, said lens cartridge having one end disposed within said lens cartridge receiver of said elongated body portion, said lens cartridge having a transverse hinge to allow said lens cartridge to be opened to load a deformable intraocular lens into the lens cartridge and then closed for enclosing the deformable intraocular lens readied for implantation;
- a nozzle portion connected to said lens cartridge, said nozzle portion comprising a lens cartridge receiver and a tip for insertion through the incision in the eye, said lens cartridge having an opposite end disposed within said lens cartridge receiver of said nozzle portion;
- a passageway extending through said lens cartridge and said nozzle portion; and
- a plunger slidably disposed within said body portion for forcing the deformable intraocular lens through said passageway from the lens cartridge and through the nozzle portion into the eye.
