Claims
- 1. A method of controlling polarization comprising:
filling micro-cracks in a fiber with a compound; receiving light in the fiber; determining a desired polarization state; applying a transverse compressive force to a first length of the fiber including the micro-crack filling compound to induce a birefringence that alters a polarization of the light to the desired polarization state.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the micro-cracks are less than 1 microns in width.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound is polyimide.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound is one of the group of chlorinated polydimethylsiloxane, monometric octadecylsilane, b-chloroethylsilsesquioxane, and methylsilsesquioxane.
