Claims
- 1. A compactor for compacting trash in a bag, said trash compactor comprising a housing including supporting structure in its upper end, a base, and a door hingedly connected to one side thereof, a trash compacting head, and means operable to reciprocate said head between an upper inoperative position and lower compacting positions, said housing including an outwardly opening, trash-receiving throat located and dimensioned to receive said head and to define a subjacent chamber with the base at the bottom thereof, the lowermost position of the head being within the chamber, said throat including side and rear walls spaced inwardly from the housing with the upper margin of each disposed towards and in contact with the corresponding wall of the housing, and bag holding means operable to hold a bag open to receive trash and to protect the bag while trash is being compacted therein, said bag holding means shaped and dimensioned to be slid into the chamber without contact with the walls thereof and to be supported by the base, said bag holding means including a bag receiving and supporting pan the side walls of which are of a flexible and resilient material having a low coefficient of friction, and an open-ended container dimensioned to fit within a bag and be supported by said pan, said container including walls of a flexible resilient material extending above the pan and a frame of spring steel to which the upper ends of the walls are secured and which is dimensioned to be a free fit within said chamber and to underlie and be shielded by said throat, said throat capable of withstanding pressure attendant the compacting of trash if extending upwardly from the container into the throat.
- 2. The trash compactor of claim 1 in which the bag holding means includes an upwardly and outwardly inclined wall serving as a trash guide and provided with a handle.
- 3. The trash compactor of claim 2 and a carrying strap attachable to the bag holding means at positions enabling a side wall to be a shield between the compacted load and the person carrying the holder by means of the strap.
- 4. The trash compactor of claim 1 and means operable to lock each end of the pan to the corresponding end of the container.
- 5. The trash compactor of claim 4 and a carrying strap including an attaching device at each end and the container includes, at each end, means engageable by an attaching device whereby the pan and the container can be carried together when they are interconnected.
- 6. The trash compactor of claim 5 in which the pan includes, at each end, means engageable by an attaching device of the carrying strap enabling the pan to be carried once the container is withdrawn therefrom.
- 7. The trash compactor of claim 1 and anti-friction means at the bottom of the chamber positioned to center the bottom portion of the pan as it is entered into the chamber.
- 8. The trash compactor of claim 1 and means to center the frame of the container when the container is entered into the chamber, the centering means are located forwardly of the path of the trash compacting head.
- 9. The trash compactor of claim 1 in which the walls of the container are upwardly and inwardly inclined to define with the walls of the pan a space dimensioned to enable the remainder of the bag to be stored therein.
