DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Referring to 1A, a pouch 10 may be understood with respect to a vertical direction 12a, horizontal direction 12b, and a longitudinal direction 12c that are all perpendicular to one another. The pouch 10 may have a substantially cuboid shape with rounding at the corners or bulging as may be result from the pouch 10 being made of flexible fabric. Accordingly, each panel of the pouch 10 may lie substantially within a plane corresponding to a side of the cuboid shape. As used herein “substantially within” a plane shall be understood as 80 percent of a panel lying within 1 cm of the plane.

The pouch 10 may include a front panel 14a substantially within a first plane parallel to the vertical direction 12a and the horizontal direction 12b. The pouch 10 may include a rear panel 14b substantially within a second plane parallel to the vertical direction 12a and the horizontal direction 12b and offset from the first plane along the longitudinal direction 12c.

The pouch 10 may include a left panel 14c substantially within a third plane parallel to the vertical direction 12a and the longitudinal direction 12c. The pouch 10 may include a right panel 14d substantially within a fourth plane parallel to the vertical direction 12a and the longitudinal direction 12c and offset from the third plane along the horizontal direction 12b.

The pouch 10 may include a top panel 14e substantially within a fifth plane parallel to the horizontal direction 12b and the longitudinal direction 12c. The pouch 10 may include a bottom panel 14f substantially within a sixth plane parallel to the horizontal direction 12b and the longitudinal direction 12c and offset from the fifth plane along the vertical direction 12a.

Two or more of the panels 14a-14f may be formed of a monolithic sheet of material. Some or all of the panels 14a-14f may be separate pieces of material stitched or otherwise fastened to one another.

The pouch may have a zippered opening 16 that extends across substantially all of: the left panel 14c; across one of (a) the front panel 14a, (b) the top panel 14e, and (c) a common edge of the front panel 14a, and the top panel 14e; and across the right panel 14d. As is apparent, the zippered opening 16 may extend at an angle 18 across the left panel 14c. For example, the zippered opening 16 may extend substantially (e.g., within 2 cm of) from an intersection of the back panel 14b, left panel 14c, and bottom panel 14f substantially to an intersection of the front panel 14a, left panel 14c, and top panel 14e. The right side panel 14d may have a mirrored configuration with the zippered opening 16 extending across the right side panel 14d at substantially (within 5 degrees) the same angle 18. For example, the zippered opening 16 may extend substantially (e.g., within 2 cm of) from an intersection of the back panel 14b, right panel 14d, and bottom panel 14f substantially to an intersection of the front panel 14a, right panel 14d, and top panel 14e. In the illustrated embodiment, the zippered opening does not extend across the back panel 14b, bottom panel 14f, or a common edge between these panels 14b, 14f.

FIG. 1B illustrates the pouch 10 with the zippered opening 16 open and the pouch 10 folded out. As is apparent, the pouch 10 may be folded out such that both the back panel 14b and bottom panel 14f are rested on a support surface. In the illustrated embodiment, webs 20 extend across the zippered opening 16 such that when the pouch 10 is folded out and rested on a support surface, the webs 20 are raised above the opening 16 relative to the support surface and form a barrier positioned above the zippered opening 16. For example, the webs 20 may be between 4 and 10 cm above the opening 16 measured perpendicular to the support surface. The webs 20 may act as temporary sides to a tray defined by the pouch 10 to help prevent items from falling out of the pouch 10. The webs 20 may be secured at both ends to the same panel 14c,14d. Alternatively, one web 20 may be secure to the intersection between the top panel 14e and the left panel 14c and the intersection between the front panel 14a and the left panel 14c. The other web 20 may be secured to the intersection between the top panel 14e and the right panel 14d and the intersection between the front panel 14a and the right panel 14d. Besides forming tray sides to hold items, the webs 20 also function to restrain the pouch 10 from opening more than about 90 degrees. Thus, the pouch, in the open configuration, has a large, stabile, flat bottom (formed from 14f and 14b) and can be moved easily in the open configuration without losing items from the resulting tray formed because of the stability created with the webs 20 limiting substantial further opening movement. The pouch 10 may even be suspended by the top of front panel 14a along a vertical surface thus creating a shelf with the items accessible therein when open.

In the illustrated embodiment, various storage structures 22a, 22b, 22c may removably or non-removably secured within the pouch 10. In the illustrated embodiment, a zippered pouch 22a secures within the pouch 10 abutting the top panel 14e and the back panel 14b. The pouch 22a may be removably secured to the pouch 10 such as by means of fastening material secured to the pouch 10 engaging fastening material on one or both of the top panel 14e and the back panel 14b. The fastening material may part of a hook-and-loop fastening system (e.g., VELCRO), 3M DUAL LOCK, snap fasteners, or other type of fasteners.

Other storage structures may include one or more sleeves or pouches 22b defined along the back panel 14b and/or bottom panel 14f. In the illustrated embodiments, openings to the pouches 22b may face inboard. Another storage structure may include a zippered pouch 22c positioned abutting the front panel 14a and the bottom panel 14f. The pouch 22c may be wedge shaped to occupy a wedge defined by the triangular portions of the side panels 14c, 14d to one side of the zippered opening 16, the front panel 14a and the bottom panel 14f The pouch 22c may be transparent or include a transparent cover.

Referring to FIG. 2A, in some embodiments, the pouch 10 may include a reconfigurable sleeve 30 that may be configured to retain items of various sizes. The reconfigurable sleeve 30 may include an inner panel 30a, left panel 30b, and right panel 30c. One edge of the left panel 30b may secure to an inner portion of the pouch 10, such as to the front panel 14a, the left panel 14c, or a common edge (e.g., seam) between the front panel 14a and the left panel 14c. Likewise, one edge of the right panel 30c may secured to an inner portion of the pouch 10, such as to the front panel 14a, the right panel 14d, or a common edge (e.g., seam) between the front panel 14a and the right panel 14d.

Another edge of the left panel 30b may secure to the front panel 30a and another edge of the right panel 30c may secure to the front panel 30a. The front panel 30a, left panel 30b, and right panel 30c may be formed of a single sheet of material. As is apparent in FIG. 3, the front panel 14a, left panel 30b, front panel 30a, and right panel 30b define the sleeve 30. The sleeve 30 may be open at its bottom or bottom portions of the panels 30a-30c may be secured to the pouch, such as to an inner surface of the bottom panel 14f. The upper edges of the panels 30a, 30b, 30c and the front panel 14a define an opening for inserting items in the sleeve 30.

One or more reconfigurable dividers may be positioned within the sleeve. For example, one divider may be formed by panels 32a, 32b. Panel 32a may be secured at one edge to one of the right panel 30c, the front panel 30a adjacent the right panel 30c (e.g., within 3 cm), or at a corner between the right panel 30c and the front panel 30a. The front panel 30a may be defined as being to one side of a point of attachment to the edge of the panel 32a and the right panel 30c as being on the other side of the point of attachment of the edge of the panel 32a. A panel 32b may be secured at one edge to one of the right panel 30c, the front panel 14a adjacent the right panel 30c (e.g., within 3 cm), or at a corner between the right panel 30c and the front panel 14a.

Distal edges of the panels 32a, 32b may be secured to one another, e.g., at a point of attachment offset from the edges of the panels 32a, 32b secured to the right panel 30c, front panel 30a, or front panel 14a. Fastening material 32c may secure to one of the panels 32a, 32b near (e.g., within 3 cm of) the distal edges thereof. In the illustrated embodiment, the fastening material 32c secures to the panel 32b. The fastening material 32c may be part of a hook-and-loop fastening system, such as VELCRO, 3M DUAL LOCK, snap fasteners, or other fastening system.

Other fastening material 32d may secure to any of the front panel 30a, right panel 30c, and front panel 14a and be configured to engage the fastening material 32c (e.g., the fastening material 32c may be include hooks and the fastening material 32d may include loops, or vice versa). In the illustrated embodiment, the fastening material 32d secures to the right panel 30c between a point of attachment of the panel 32b to the right panel 30c and the front panel 14a. Other places of securement are possible, for example, fastening material 32c and fastening material 32d may secure to panel 32b offset from one another with fastening material 32d being closer to the right panel 30c than the fastening material 32d. The fastening materials 32c, 32d may likewise both secure to the panel 32a in a like manner.

Another divider may be formed by panels 34a, 34b. Panel 34a is secured at one edge to one of the left panel 30b, the front panel 30a adjacent the left panel 30b (e.g., within 3 cm), or at a corner between the left panel 30b and the front panel 30a. The front panel 30a may be defined as being to one side of a point of attachment to the edge of the panel 34a and the left panel 30b as being on the other side of the point of attachment of the edge of the panel 34a. A panel 34b may be secured at one edge to one of the left panel 30b, the front panel 14a adjacent the left panel 30b (e.g., within 3 cm), or at a corner between the left panel 30b and the front panel 14a.

Distal edges of the panels 34a, 34b may be secured to one another, e.g., at a point of attachment offset from the edges of the panels 34a, 34b secured to the right panel 32c, front panel 30a, or front panel 14a. Fastening material 34c may secure to one of the panels 34a, 34b near (e.g., within 3 cm of) the distal edges thereof. In the illustrated embodiment, the fastening material 34c secures to the panel 34a. The fastening material 34c may be part of a hook-and-loop fastening system, such as VELCRO, 3M DUAL LOCK, snap fasteners, or other fastening system.

Other fastening material 34d may secure to any of the front panel 30a, left panel 30b, and front panel 14a and be configured to engage the fastening material 34c (e.g., the fastening material 32c may be include hooks and the fastening material 34d may include loops, or vice versa). In the illustrated embodiment, the fastening material 34d secures to the left panel 30b between a point of attachment of the panel 34a to the left panel 30b and the front panel 30a. Other places of securement are possible, for example, fastening material 34c and fastening material 34d may secure to panel 34a offset from one another with fastening material 34d being closer to the left panel 30b than the fastening material 34d. The fastening materials 34c, 34d may likewise both secure to the panel 34b in a like manner.

When the dividers are in use, the fastening material 32c may be engaged with fastening material 34c such that the panels 32a, 32b, 34a, 34b form a continuous divider across the sleeve. As is also apparent, pockets may be formed between the panels 32a, 32b and between the panels 34a, 34b. In some embodiments a single panel of the panels 32a, 32b and a single panel of the panels 34a, 34b are used to form a divider without defining additional pockets. Most any number of dividers may be employed in various embodiments including a single divider, two, three, four, or more dividers may be employed depending on the size of the pouch and the use desired.

FIG. 2B illustrates a configuration of the dividers that leaves the sleeve formed by panels 14a, 14b, 14c mostly open. Fastening material 32c may be engaged with fastening material 32d to maintain the panels 32a, 32b folded out of the way. Likewise, fastening material 34c may be engaged with fastening material 34d to maintain the panels 34a, 34b folded out of the way. FIG. 2B further illustrates that the front panel 30a of the sleeve 30 may define a pouch having an opening 30d, such as a zippered opening, at the upper edge thereof or on a surface of the front panel 30a.

Referring to FIG. 3 while still referring to FIGS. 2A and 2B, a pouch panel 36 may be secured within the pouch 10, such as to the back panel 14b. In some embodiments, the pouch panel 36 and back panel 14b define a pouch for storing items. The pouch panel 36 may define an opening 36a, such as a zippered opening (see FIG. 2B). In some embodiments, the back panel 14b may also define a zippered opening 36b such that the volume defined by the pouch panel 36 and the back panel 14b is accessible from outside of the pouch 10 while the opening 16 is closed.

In some embodiments, an end portion of the zippered opening 36b may be covered by a panel 38 secured to the back panel 14b (see FIG. 3). At least a portion of an edge of the panel 38 is not secured to the back panel 14b in order to define an opening at one edge 38a. For example, the covered end portion may comprise between 10 and 30 percent of the length of the opening 36b. A cable 40 may be passed through the end portion of the opening 36b covered by the panel 38 in order to reduce entry of debris into the pouch defined by the pouch panel 36 and hinder unintentional release of items through the opening 36b. The cable 40 may be used to charge a device using a battery located within the pouch 10, convey audio signals to headphones, or perform other functions. To facilitate this usage, the zippered opening 36b may include two zipper pulls 36c such that the opening 36b may be opened from either end. Accordingly, zipper pull 36d may be urged toward one end of the opening 36b with a cable 40 passing therethrough. Without altering this arrangement, zipper pull 36c may be used to open the opening 36b from the other end in order to retrieve items.

Referring to FIG. 4, one or more panels of the pouch 10, such as front panel 14a may have attachment structures secured thereto. For example, one or more straps 42 stitched to the front panel 14a at a plurality of locations 44. For example, the straps 42 may provide an attachment system according to the Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment (MOLLE) standard. The straps 42 may therefore provide attachment structures for securing the pouch 10 to another larger structure or pack or for securing smaller items to the pouch 10. In the illustrated example, a strap 46 passes under the straps 42 and has a loop 48, such as a rigid plastic loop, at one end and a stop 50 at the other end, the stop 50 being sized to resist passing under the straps 42, such as by having a width greater than a separation between the stitched locations 44. Accordingly, items may be suspended from the loops 46 or the pouch 10 may be suspended using the loops 46.

While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, as noted above, many changes can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, the scope of the invention is not limited by the disclosure of the preferred embodiment. Instead, the invention should be determined entirely by reference to the claims that follow.
