Claims
- 1. A method for manufacturing a traverse drum having thin walls, comprising the steps of:
- producing an oxygen-free atmosphere;
- forming a soluble core with a first soluble substance;
- placing the soluble core in the middle of the segments of a mold having an inner configuration corresponding to the outer configuration of the desired traverse drum;
- pouring a molten second meltable substance into the space between the soluble core and the mold, said second meltable substance being solid under a condition which the first soluble substance forming the soluble core is dissolved;
- dissolving the soluble core to thereby form a model drum;
- coating the surface of the model drum with a film of a refractory substance to form a shell having walls of a thickness suitable for pouring molten metal therein and facilitating the removal of the casting therefrom;
- melting the model drum to thereby form a refractory shell;
- forming a casting by pouring a molten iron metal into the refractory shell in the oxygen-free atmosphere; and
- surface treating and finishing the casting;
- wherein the mold is a composite mold divided longitudinally into several segments capable of being radially divided.
- 2. A method for manufacturing a traverse drum having thin walls, comprising the steps of:
- forming a soluble core having an exterior surface corresponding to the desired interior surface of the traverse drum to be manufactured;
- placing the soluble core inside of a composite mold having an interior surface corresponding to the desired exterior surface of the traverse drum to be manufactured;
- pouring a soluble substance into the space between the soluble core and the composite mold;
- solidifying the soluble substance;
- dividing the composite mold into segments so as to free the solidified soluble substance and the soluble core therefrom;
- dissolving the soluble core so as to free the solidified soluble substance therefore to form a soluble model of the traverse drum to be manufactured;
- coating the soluble model with at least one layer of a refractory material;
- dissolving the soluble model so as to free the refractory material therefrom to form a refractory shell having an interior space corresponding to the desired shape of the traverse drum to be manufactured;
- pouring a molten iron metal into the interior space of the refractory shell in an oxygen-free atmosphere;
- solidifying the metal; and
- breaking the refractory shell so as to free the solidified metal therefrom.
